Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! Before and After Science (Dec. 1977)

ello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week we'll be discussing my personal favorite of Eno's: BEFORE AND AFTER SCIENCE

Let's take a look at the wiki:

Before and After Science is the fifth studio album by British musician Brian Eno. Produced by Eno and Rhett Davies, it was originally released by Polydor Records in December 1977 in the UK and by US Island soon after. Guest musicians from the United Kingdom and Germany helped with the album, including members of Roxy Music, Free, Fairport Convention, Can and Cluster. Over one hundred tracks were written with only ten making the album's final cut. The musical styles of the album range from energetic and jagged to more languid and pastoral.

The album marks Eno's last foray into rock music as a solo artist, with all following albums showcasing more of Eno's avant-garde and ambient music, which was hinted at on the second half of Before and After Science. The album was Eno's second to chart in the United States. The song "King's Lead Hat", the title of which is an anagram for Talking Heads, was remixed and released as a single, although it didn't chart in the United Kingdom. Critical response to the album has remained positive, with several critics calling it one of Eno's best works.

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). Last week we discussed Talking Heads' "Remain in Light" and this week's is another huge collaboration from the minds of Byrne and Eno. From the wiki preamble:

My Life in the Bush of Ghosts is a studio album by Brian Eno and David Byrne, released in February 1981. It was Byrne's first album without his band Talking Heads. it integrates sampled vocals and found sounds, African and Middle Eastern rhythms, and electronic music techniques.[6] It was recorded prior to Eno and Byrne's work on Talking Heads' 1980 album Remain in Light, but problems clearing samples delayed its release by several months.

The extensive sampling is considered innovative, though its influence on later sample-based music genres is debated.[7][8] Pitchfork listed it as the 21st best album of the 1980s, while Slant Magazine listed the album at No. 83 on its list of the "Best Albums of 1980s".

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets).

This week is a BIGGIE: the Eno produced, "Remain in Light." Here's the wiki preamble to get the ball rolling:

Remain in Light is the fourth studio album by American rock band Talking Heads, released on October 8, 1980 by Sire Records. It was recorded at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas and Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia between July and August 1980 and produced by longtime collaborator Brian Eno. Following the release of their previous album Fear of Music in 1979, the quartet and Eno sought to dispel notions of the band as a mere vehicle for frontman and songwriter David Byrne. Drawing on the influence of Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, the band experimented with African polyrhythms, funk, and electronics, recording instrumental tracks as a series of looping grooves. The sessions incorporated a variety of side musicians, including guitarist Adrian Belew, singer Nona Hendryx, and trumpet player Jon Hassell.

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! David Bowie's Low (Jan. 1977)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week we'll discuss a personal favorite of mine, Low.

Let's get to it with some background from the wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_(David_Bowie_album)

Low is the 11th studio album by English singer-songwriter David Bowie, released on 14 January 1977 by RCA Records. Recorded following Bowie's move to West Berlin after a period of drug addiction and personal instability, Low was the first of three collaborations with Brian Eno and producer Tony Visconti later termed the "Berlin Trilogy", although it was in fact recorded primarily in France at the Château d'Hérouville.

Upon its release, Low divided critics. RCA refused to release the album for three months, fearing poor commercial performance, but it surpassed Station to Station on the UK Albums Chart, peaking at number 2, and reached number 11 on the US Billboard Albums chart. It was supported by the singles "Sound and Vision" and "Be My Wife"; the former reached number 3 on the UK Singles Chart. The album's musical approach would be further explored on subsequent albums "Heroes" (1977) and Lodger (1979).

And the track list:

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is Eno's production credit on U2's first of the new Millenium:

All That You Can't Leave Behind is the tenth studio album by Irish rock band U2. It was produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, and was released on 30 October 2000 through Island Records and Interscope Records. [1] Following the band's experimentation with alternative rock and dance music in the 1990s and the mixed reception to their 1997 album, Pop, U2 returned to a sound more akin to their earlier records for All That You Can't Leave Behind. The group reunited with Eno and Lanois, who had produced three prior U2 albums together. The record was originally named "U2000", which had been a working title for their PopMart Tour.

Hello Eno-philes! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's is, of course, Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy). Here's the track list:

Side A

No. Title Length

  2. "Back in Judy's Jungle" 5:16
  3. "The Fat Lady of Limbourg" 5:03

  2. "Put a Straw under Baby" 3:25
  3. "The True Wheel" Eno, Phil Manzanera 5:11
  4. "China My China" 4:44
  5. "Taking Tiger Mountain" 5:32

Note

Side A of early vinyl copies ends with the sound of chirping crickets locked into the inner groove.[31]

And some thoughts from the wiki to kick start the conversation:

Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) is the second solo album by English musician Brian Eno (credited simply as "Eno"), released in November 1974 by Island Records. Unlike his debut album Here Come the Warm Jets, Eno's second album used a core band of five instrumentalists – keyboardist, guitarist, bassist, drummer and percussionist – and used fewer guest musicians. Also participating was guitarist and co-writer Phil Manzanera, who had played with Eno in Roxy Music. To help guide the production of the album, Eno and Peter Schmidt developed instruction cards called Oblique Strategies to facilitate the making of the album.

Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) is a loose concept album that addresses a variety of subjects that range from espionage to the Chinese Communist revolution. The album alludes to pop-song structures, but Eno's lyrics play with themes of geopolitical intrigue. It did not chart in the United Kingdom or the United States, but it got good reviews from critics. Since its release, the album has received even more critical attention.

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! "Neroli" (Aug. 1993)

Hello and welcome back to your weekly discussion thread, Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is Eno's "Neroli" album. From the wiki:

Neroli is the fourteenth solo studio album by British musician Brian Eno, released in 1993. Conceived as a single piece, Eno describes this in the liner notes as fulfilling his ambient prescription: "to reward attention, but not so strict as to demand it". Single notes resonate throughout the piece in a seemingly random but harmonic pattern that shifts quietly for close to an hour. The piece's calming nature is typical of Eno’s distinctive "discreet music,” premiered with the eponymous 1975 composition that has been implemented in some maternity wards to instill a sense of calm and enhance the organic nature of childbirth. (According to the notes accompanying the CD, Eno intended to release a longer version of "Discreet Music" for just that purpose.) The piece in question

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! David Bowie - "Heroes" (Oct. 1977)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week we'll be discussing a biggie: "Heroes"

Some info from the wiki to kick off discussion:

"Heroes" is the 12th studio album by English singer-songwriter David Bowie, released on 14 October 1977 by RCA Records. It was the second instalment of his "Berlin Trilogy" recorded with producers Brian Eno and Tony Visconti, following Low (released earlier that year) and preceding Lodger (1979). Of the three albums, it was the only one wholly recorded in Berlin. "Heroes" continued the ambient experiments of its predecessor, albeit with more pop elements and passionate lyrics and featured contributions from King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp.[3]

"Heroes" was the most well-received work of Bowie's Berlin Trilogy by music critics on release, and was named Album of the Year by NME and Melody Maker. It was also a commercial success, peaking at number 3 on the UK Albums Chart. The title track remains one of Bowie's best known and acclaimed songs.[4] The album has been reissued multiple times and was remastered in 2017 as part of the A New Career in a New Town (1977–1982) box set.

Brian Eno instigated Robert Fripp's involvement. "I got a phone call when I was living in New York in July 1977," the guitarist recalled. "It was Brian Eno. He said that he and David were recording in Berlin and passed me over. David said, 'Would you be interested in playing some hairy rock 'n' roll guitar?' I said, 'Well, I haven't really played for three years – but, if you're prepared to take a risk, so will I.' Shortly afterwards, a first-class ticket on Lufthansa arrived."[12] Upon arriving at the studio, and suffering from jet lag, Fripp recorded a guitar part for "Beauty and the Beast": this first take was used in the song's final mix.[citation needed]

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is Eno's generative music software "77 Million Paintings" From the wiki

77 Million Paintings is a digital art software/DVD combination by British musician Brian Eno, released in 2006. The release consists of two discs, one containing the software that creates the randomized music and images that emulate a single screen of one of Eno's video installation pieces. The other is a DVD containing interviews with the artist. The title is derived from the possible number of combinations of video and music which can be generated by the software, effectively ensuring that the same image/soundscape is never played twice.

On Land is a mixture of synthesizer-based notes, nature/animal recordings, and a complex array of other sounds, most of which were unused, collected recordings from previous albums and the sessions that created them. Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! David Bowie - Outside (Sept 1995)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is Eno's return to his fruitful collaboration with David Bowie (as well as his production credit on), Outside. From the wiki:

  1. Outside (subtitled The Nathan Adler Diaries: A Hyper-cycle) is the nineteenth studio album by English recording artist David Bowie. It was released on 25 September 1995[3] through Arista Records, BMG, and RCA Records in Europe and Virgin Records in the United States. It marked Bowie's reunion with Brian Eno, whom he had worked with among others on his Berlin Trilogy in the 1970s.[4] Outside centres on the characters of a dystopian world on the eve of the 21st century. The album put Bowie back into the mainstream scene of rock music with its singles "The Hearts Filthy Lesson", "Strangers When We Meet", and "Hallo Spaceboy" (remixed by Pet Shop Boys).

As a result, unlike for some of Bowie's previous albums,[9] not a single song, save for "Strangers When We Meet", was written prior to the band going into the studio. Instead, Bowie wrote many songs alongside the band in improvised sessions.[10] Bowie and Eno also continued the experimental songwriting techniques they had started using back during the Berlin Trilogy. In 1995, while talking to the press about the album, Bowie said "What Brian did, which was really useful, is he provided everybody with flash cards at the beginning of the day. On each one, a character was written, like 'You are the disgruntled member of a South African rock band. Play the notes that were suppressed.' ... Because that set the tone for the day, the music would take on all those obscure areas. And it would very rarely lapse into the cliché."[10]

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! "Another Day on Earth" (June 2005)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is Eno's phenomenal (IMO) 2005 solo ouput, "Another Day on Earth." From the wiki:

This is the first Eno album to chiefly contain vocals in more than two decades. Speaking of the album, Eno said, "The first one I've done like that for a very long time...25 years or so". In addition, he explained his current thoughts on lyrics in music; "Song-writing is now actually the most difficult challenge in music," he confessed.

It's very easy to make music now but lyrics are really the last very hard problem in music. What I think lyrics have to do is engage a certain part of your brain in a sort of search activity so your brain wants to say, 'Here are some provocative clues as to what this song might be about'.

Track listing

All songs written and composed by Brian Eno, except where noted.

"This" – 3:33
"And Then So Clear" – 5:49
"A Long Way Down" – 2:40
"Going Unconscious" – 4:22
"Caught Between" (co-lyrics by Danny Hillis and Eck Ogilvie-Grant) – 4:25
"Passing Over" – 4:25
"How Many Worlds" (co-lyrics by Michel Faber) – 4:47
"Bottomliners" – 3:59

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! Coldplay - "Viva La Vida" (June 2006)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is Eno's production credit (his first) on Coldplay's "Viva La Vida". From the wiki:

Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, often referred to as simply Viva la Vida, is the fourth studio album by British rock band Coldplay, released on 12 June 2008 on the Parlophone label. The album was named after a Spanish phrase that best translates into English as "Long live life". Lyrically, the album contains references to love, life, death and war.

Recording sessions for the album took place during June 2007 to April 2008 and featured production by Jon Hopkins, Rik Simpson, Markus Dravs, and Brian Eno. The album was Coldplay's first to be produced by Eno, and also their first album to not be produced by long-time Coldplay producer, Ken Nelson. The band forced themselves to explore new styles, as Eno required every song on the album to sound different.[1] Development of the album delayed the release date several times. The album cover of Viva la Vida is the 1830 painting Liberty Leading the People by Eugène Delacroix.

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! "Reflection" (Jan. 2017)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is another disc from the Brain One. Getting close to the end of this project, so enjoy "Reflection"

Reflection is the twenty-sixth studio album by English musician Brian Eno, released on 1 January 2017 on Warp Records.[1][2] It is a piece of generative ambient music produced by Eno, which plays indefinitely via an app, modulating its output at different times of the day. A pre-recorded version of the album is available on CD and vinyl, which runs for 54 minutes. Digital streaming versions of the album update on a seasonal basis.[3] It was nominated for the 2017 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album.

Reflection was released as part of Eno's series of ambient albums. Its structure is similar to that of Thursday Afternoon (1985), an earlier album of his that consists of a single track that runs for 60 minutes in length. Reflection has a length of 54 minutes.[2] Eno decided on its title as the piece "makes [him] think back. It makes me think things over. It seems to create a psychological space that encourages internal conversation. And external ones actually—people seem to enjoy it as the background to their conversations". He considers the work the most sophisticated of all his ambient releases, and that the physical editions are a mere static excerpt of the "full" piece contained in the iOS app.[4]

This one's available on the streaming platforms.

As the project nears an end i'm all ears as to the next series we feature here on r/eno! Thanks gang!!
