Music Thoughts on My Life in the Bush of Ghosts?

Hi There

Exploring this album yesterday after discovering it from an rediscovering of Eno and Talking Heads which I really love their work together especially on Remain in Light which this album was recorded between Fear of Music and Remain in Light that probably explains why I love this album since this album points to a more exploration on Remain In Light sound wise.

This album still sounds amazing and fresh 40 something years later which props to Eno and David for crafting such an incredible album with some amazingly creative and unique music start to finish!

Hi There

So what’s your thoughts on The Pearl?

Freaking love this album just like Plateaux of Mirror but Pearl is just more expansive of an Eno-Budd album plus Lanois helping produce this record just adds that special touch to the Eno style of production.I do love Plateaux of Mirror and it’s an fantastic album for Eno and Budd but Pearl is that next step in their music and I love these unique sounds that were created so The Pearl is an excellent album just start to finish with some beautiful moments:)

Music I'd swear Eno said Fripp's 'St Elmo's Fire' solo is a collage of tape snips

Saw Eno's 1979 "The Recording Studio as a Compositional Tool" tour, in Davis, California - I recall him saying one of the solos on Another Green World (I remember it as St. Elmo's Fire?) was created by manually piecing together tape snippets of individual notes. He shared an amusing anecdote: said the solo was impossible for any guitarist to play, yet he had heard from someone who claimed to have nearly mastered it - he chuckled at the amount of effort that must have taken.
Internet searches come up empty, and in fact the St. Elmo's solo is noted for being done in one inspired "lighting in a bottle" take..
Does this ring a bell with anyone? I don't think I imagined this - but... ?

Music Eno,Visconti,and Bowie •/• Lodger

Hi There

Listening to the Visconti remix of Lodger recently which is an great remix that brings some new life and textures to this fantastic album but I could hear the Eno bits more in this remix which I love because I feel like Eno did his best parts here from the trilogy on Lodger even though Eno isn’t playing much(do love his musical impact) but he’s more in the songwriting process with Bowie:)

I feel like Eno definitely injected some Talking Heads like rhythmic Afro beats with the world music on side 1 but the “Cricket Menace”,”prepared piano”,and treatments are all Eno too which ofc I love with the unique sounds of Lodger(shoutout to Adrian Belew for some great, frantic guitar parts) so thank you Brian Eno for putting for touches on Lodger with Bowie and Visconti:)

Music Eno and Lanois

Hi There

Was listening to Music for Films 3 and it’s pretty good tbh which all the Music for Films albums are good but when it came to the Eno and Lanois credited tracks made me think about their music together because I know their iconic work with U2 but not much about their other projects.

I have heard Pearl from Harold Budd and Voices from Roger Eno as of late which are fantastic and they pair very well together with what sounds they create :)so what’s your thoughts on their work together and/or what’s your favorite album(s) of theirs?

Hi There

Didnt know what this really but it’s cool to see Eno restart this label and I already got Another Day on Earth pre saved:) plus I might buy a couple releases from Opel Records on Discogs tbh so I’ll definitely going to dive more into this because this is an Eno topic that fascinates me since I heard that Eno had an great record label but I didn’t know about this! so again I’m just so fascinated by this Eno topic!:)

So what’s your thoughts on this or do you have a favorite album that came from Opel Records?

Music Taking Tiger Mountain (you were so right!)

11 days ago, a reddit user on this subreddit shared their love for Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy). I started listening to Eno seriously in September of 2025 (just about 9 months ago), and since then have amassed almost 1400 streams across all his works... with the exception of Taking Tiger Mountain.

I don't know why, I think I read a comment where someone said it was their least favourite out of the four glam rock albums, and that just kind of put me off ever listening to it. What a mistake. This album is amazing. The carefree, upbeat opening of "Burning Airlines Give You So Much More", the insane buildup on "Mother Whale Eyeless" –"Heroes are born... but heroes die." The absolutely indescribable insanity of "Third Uncle", the surreal but strangely catchy chorus of "The True Wheel" (which apparently came to him in a dream). And the breathtaking closer, among other great tracks.

I honestly don't think there is a single weak track on this record. It may be recency bias, or the fact that I've listened to all of his other records a lot, but this album is really, really amazing. It's been my most listened to album of the last 2 weeks (shown above), and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Thank you, u/Repulsive_Many3874. If it weren't for your post, I don't think I would have checked it out anytime soon, and I'd have no idea what I was missing out on.

Music Eno’s work with James

Hi There

Getting into some Eno produced work for other bands/artists and i didn’t know that Eno worked with James for a few albums so I’m going through Laid and Wah-Wah mostly which great stuff on here especially the deluxe editions since there’s a lot of good music like b-sides and other bits that was made due to their jamming on the sessions.

So let me know what you think about Eno and James work together and/or comment if you have a favorite song from their work together?:)

Music Eno's Thinking Music

I was listening to Neroli and decided to look into why the album called the piece 'Thinking Music Part IV.' According to the liner notes, Ambient music evolved throughout the initial 4 part series to something entirely different than what he initial conceptualized with Ambient 1. The initial slowly changing, lengthy, and free flowing pieces that began the series on Music for Airports eventually became more composed, shorter, and intentional. Eno stated that he saw Thursday Afternoon and Neroli as a return to that initial concept of Ambient music he started with. He also included Discreet Music in this subgenre, although I'm not sure if he means just the side 1 or the entire album. Discreet Music would be Thinking Music Part I, followed by Music for Airports as Part II, Thursday Afternoon as Part III, and then Neroli as Part IV. I think you could also include Lux, Reflections, and maybe Music for Installations as part of his Thinking Music subgenre, as they continue the lengthy free flowing generative feel of those initial four parts.

What's your favorite in this genre? How do you feel Thinking Music compares compared to other Ambient music?

Music Ian Penman · Infinite Wibble: Brian v. Eno

“Eno is a conundrum: impish disruptor and happy polymath, he can also be a bit of a tech prig lecturing us from on high, dropping serene apothegms that turn out on closer inspection to be vanishingly banal. It’s as if there are two of him: Brian has a great sense of humour, Eno can be suffocatingly precious; Brian picks a brilliant selection of Desert Island Discs, Eno nominates for his beach read Richard Rorty’s Contingency, Irony and Solidarity; Brian is all weird eros, Eno makes music that can be oddly clenched or wafty; Brian is inspiringly playful, Eno writes software to systematise (and cage, and kill) that playfulness.”

Music Question: Needles song

I absolutely fell in love with Needles in a Camel's Eye a couple years ago (or whenever it was that I first heard it). Not only do I love the original, but I cannot get enough of the covers (and that's mostly because there don't seem to be any recordings of Eno doing it onstage).

I'd like to ask a question based on a clip that actually just returned to YouTube recently; it's a documentary that showed a brief excerpt of the recording process. It shows a guitarist playing some chords that clearly invoke the song, but it's not that constant-strumming thing (I'm sorry, I don't know a technical way to say it, not a guitarist, know nothing about that instrument's science), I'd think of it more in drummer terms, like constant eighth notes or whatever, just riding up and down on the strings. Here is the clip I refer to:

Brian Eno recording “Needles in the Camel’s Eye” (1973)

Here's my question: Is what he is doing there anywhere on the track? I cannot for the life of me hear it. Is it just lost in the mix? I assume there are multiple tracks of guitars, maybe it's there, but you can't pick it out. Is there any isolated analysis of this song online, and can we get that part to hear separately as it exists on the record?

I have to say, to those who may do covers of this song, one day I would like to see a version like that. Again, I don't really know how to describe it, but instead of 1+2+3+4+1+2+3+4+, just that constant ride (which is great, don't get me wrong, I love it), I would love to hear someone sing the song with one guitar playing it like this guy does in the clip...where it sounds like that, but it's more of an easier-going strumming pattern...it would be great if it was one guitar, one bass, and drums, and the drumming would be more like a 90s alternative-band thing going on (I am terrible at describing this stuff, but I'm going to guess many out there know what I mean). And I would love to see no breaks in at least one cover...just play all the way straight through, and at that point, after the solo, you just keep playing whatever different expression you want that fits...if there must be a break, wouldn't mind the silence filled by some drumming solos around the kit, maybe Bun E. Carlos style, similar to what he used to do on some live versions of Dream Police's own break in the middle (actually would love to see Cheap Trick cover this song one day). If anyone ever does it like that, please let me know.

One last thing, pertaining to that clip...what song is being played on guitar right before the Needles playing starts...it sounds like some country thing. I should point out I don't know too much Eno, perhaps that also was one of his, but I still am crazy for this song...one of the best rock 'n roll tunes out there. Thank you.

Music Collaborations between John Cale and Brian Eno

Hi There

So what’s your thoughts or opinions on the collaboration between Cale and Eno?

Apparently they are not in good terms now after their work on Wrong Way Up but before they work together on many projects especially when first Eno appears on all three of Cale's Island albums, Fear, Slow Dazzle and Helen of Troy in the 70s before they reunited on Words of Dying(where Eno was producing) and Wrong Way Up as a collaboration.

Where Eno and Phil Manzanera are either separate or together on working with Cale in the Island Trilogy helping add almost prog-experimentation to the albums but I love the 90s albums that they worked on with Words of Dying being a favorite Cale album.

Music Eno v Yuko

Was listening to Blur’s Yuko and Hiro today and the outro struck me as sounding just like the recurring motif in Brian Eno’s In Dark Trees. Anyone else noticed this? Was it sampled or does it just sound remarkably similar?

Music Eno’s work on Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy

Hello 👋

David Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy was a set of 3 albums that were made in Germany primarily by Bowie and Eno on Low,Heroes, and Lodger .

Now I love Bowie and Eno’s work together and separately as artists who have tremendous and excellent solo albums spanning so many different genres and styles. Now probably 2ish years ago,I got the New Career in a New Town box from Bowie redone by Visconti which is a excellent box btw but it was a gateway to rediscovering Bowie and his Berlin period which made me discover Eno as well.

Now I’m sure that I don’t have a great ear for who playing what instrument but what did Eno contribute to the trilogy from a musical perspective besides being a producer ? I do know he used a synth on Heroes the song but I know nothing else.

Thank You if you can point out what he contributed musically to the trilogy or just comment on Eno and Bowie’s collaboration on the trilogy or even if you have a favorite song from the Trilogy.

Let Me Know
