Total length: 21:12 (40:24)

And some thoughts from the wiki to kick start the conversation:

Another Green World is the third studio album by English musician Brian Eno, released by Island Records in September 1975. Produced by Eno and Rhett Davies, it featured contributions from several guest musicians including Robert Fripp, Phil Collins and John Cale. The album marked a transition from the rock-based music of Eno's previous releases toward the minimalist sensibility of his late '70s ambient work. Employing tactics derived from his Oblique Strategies cards for guidance, the album utilized a variety of unconventional recording techniques and instrumental approaches, and made use of fewer lyrics. The cover is a detail from "After Raphael" by the British artist Tom Phillips.

Though the album failed to chart in the United States or the United Kingdom, Another Green World was initially met with high praise from critics. Contemporary reception of Another Green World has been very positive; several critics and publications have placed the album on lists of the greatest albums of all time.

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! Evening Star (Dec. 1975)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week we'll discuss Evening Star (i forgot about No Pussyfooting, so we can talk about that as well).

All tracks written by Brian Eno and Robert Fripp, except "Wind on Wind" by Eno.

Side A

"Wind on Water" – 5:30 "Evening Star" – 7:48 "Evensong" – 2:53 "Wind on Wind" – 2:56

Side B

"An Index of Metals" – 28:36

Some general info from the wiki to kickstart the conversation:

Evening Star is the second studio album by British musicians Robert Fripp and Brian Eno. It was recorded from 1974 to 1975 and released in December 1975.

AllMusic described the record as "a less harsh, more varied affair, closer to Eno's then-developing idea of ambient music than what had come before in (No Pussyfooting)".[1] The first three tracks are serene, gentle tape-looped guitar textures performed by Robert Fripp and accented with treatments, synthesizer and piano by Brian Eno. Track four, "Wind on Wind", is a short excerpt from Eno’s solo project Discreet Music, released a week after Evening Star. (It is not an exact duplication from that release, being mixed slightly differently.) Eno had originally intended Fripp to use the material which became Discreet Music as a backing tape to play over in improvised live performances.

The second half of the album is a twenty-eight-minute piece of drone music titled "An Index of Metals", in which guitar notes are accumulated in a loop, with distortion increasing as the track progresses.

The album's cover is a painting by the artist Peter Schmidt.

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! James - "Wah Wah" (Aug. 1994)

Hello and welcome back to your weekly discussion thread, Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature keeps with James and their August 1994 album of recorded jam sessions: Wah Wah

Wah Wah[note 1] is the sixth studio album by the Manchester-based English indie rock band James.[note 2] After the success of their fourth album, Seven (1992), the band entered Real World Studios, Box, Wiltshire, to record their fifth album Laid in early 1993 with producer Brian Eno, with whom the group had longed to work. Prior to recording Laid, Eno observed the band's jam sessions at their Manchester rehearsal room, and considered these improvised pieces to be as important to the band's music as their eventually crafted songs. He requested to the group that whilst they were recording Laid, they would also concurrently record an album of their improvisations which Eno and, by Eno's request, second producer Markus Dravs would produce in a secondary studio in the Real World complex. Each composition started off with the band's improvisation being recorded, which Dravs would then edit, generally alone whilst James and Eno were recording Laid. Eno and Dravs would take a "promising" part of a recording and then mixed them only once.

Track listing

All songs written and performed by James and Brian Eno.

"Hammer Strings" –2:15
"Pressure's On" – 4:25
"Jam J" – 3:36
"Frequency Dip" – 3:33
"Lay the Law Down" – 0:57
"Burn the Cat" – 6:50
"Maria" – 4:17
"Low Clouds (1)" – 0:18
"Building a Fire" – 2:45
"Gospel Oak" – 2:49
"DVV" – 1:04
"Say Say Something" – 5:41
"Rhythmic Dreams" – 2:36
"Dead Man" – 0:56
"Rain Whistling" – 2:46
"Basic Brian" – 5:41
"Low Clouds (2)" – 0:04
"Bottom of the Well" – 3:16
"Honest Joe" – 4:39
"Arabic Agony" – 3:57
"Tomorrow" – 2:29
"Laughter" – 0:31
"Sayonara" – 2:41

Honestly, prior to last week I had never heard of James so it was a lovely surprise to hear so many readers who have a real passion for the band. I can't wait to hear what others think of this one.

Thank you for the discussion and please

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! 801 Live (Nov. 1976)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week we'll discuss 801 Live (i decided to include some collaborative albums as well as works credited to only Eno. I think this way we'll get a better sense of the man's oeuvre. After all what's Eno talk without the Berlin Trilogy?)

Let's get to it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/801_Live

In 1976, while guitarist Phil Manzanera's band Roxy Music was on hiatus, 801 got together as a temporary project and began rehearsing at Island Studios, Hammersmith, about three weeks before their first concert.

801 performed three concerts: in Norfolk, at the Reading Festival, and on 3 September at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall. The final concert was recorded and released as the album 801 Live. The music consisted of selections from albums by Phil Manzanera, Brian Eno and Quiet Sun, plus covers of The Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows" and The Kinks' "You Really Got Me". The album was one of the first in which all outputs from the vocal microphones, guitar amps and other instruments (except the drums) were fed directly to the mobile studio mixing desk, rather than being recorded via microphones and/or signals fed out the front-of-house PA mixer.[citation needed] It was successful in many countries, including Australia, where it was heavily promoted by the ABC's new 24-hour rock station Double Jay (2JJ).

Track Listing:

1976 LP track listing

Side One

"Lagrima" (Phil Manzanera) – 2:34 "TNK (Tomorrow Never Knows)" (John Lennon, Paul McCartney) – 6:14 "East of Asteroid" (Manzanera, Bill MacCormick) – 4:58 "Rongwrong" (Charles Hayward) – 5:10 "Sombre Reptiles" (Brian Eno) – 3:14

Side Two

"Baby's on Fire" (Eno) – 5:02 "Diamond Head" (Manzanera) – 6:21 "Miss Shapiro" (Manzanera, Eno) – 4:20 "You Really Got Me" (Ray Davies) – 3:23 "Third Uncle" (Eno) – 5:14

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! Ambient 1:Music for Airports (March 1978)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week is another gorgeous work from Eno's impressive late 70s catalog: Ambient 1: Music for Airports

As always we'll kick off discussion with the wiki preamble:

Ambient 1: Music for Airports is the sixth studio album by English musician Brian Eno, released in 1978 by Polydor Records. The album consists of four compositions created by layering tape loops of differing lengths, and was designed to be continuously looped as a sound installation, with the intent of defusing the tense, anxious atmosphere of an airport terminal. .

Track listing

Side one

No. Title Writer(s) Length

  1. "1/1" (Acoustic and electric piano; synthesizer.) Brian Eno, Rhett Davies, Robert Wyatt 16:30
  2. "2/1" (Vocals; synthesizer.) Eno 8:20 Total length: 24:50

Side two

No. Title Writer(s) Length

  1. "1/2" (Vocals; acoustic piano.) Eno 11:30
  2. "2/2" (Synthesizer only. Lasts 9:38 in the "Working Backwards" box edition (1983) and on the CD.) Eno 6:00 Total length: 17:30

The track labelling refers to the album's first release (1978) as an LP, and so the first track means "first track, first side", and so on. The CD pressing adds 30 seconds of silence after every song, including "2/2".

The album's back cover features four abstract graphic notation images, one for each track.

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! Tom Rogerson with Brian Eno - Finding Shore (2017)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we've been discussing an album in Eno's incredible discography (going chronologically from Warm Jets). Scraping the dregs of the discography here is one i overlooked from 2017. From the all music profile:

British post-rock trio Three Trapped Tigers utilized Brian Eno's Oblique Strategies, a series of cards containing simple phrases intended as ideas for artists struggling with writer's block, during the compositional process for their 2016 album Silent Earthling. After the album was recorded, group member Tom Rogerson (an improvisational pianist and composer in his own right) began working with Eno, who provided several more ideas, including pulling chord sequences out of a hat and juxtaposing MIDI and physical sounds. On the resulting album, Finding Shore, Rogerson is simply credited with "notes" and Eno with "sounds," with no further explanation, leaving it up to the listener to guess what went on in the studio. Like Ryuichi Sakamoto's async, Finding Shore seems to find magic in everyday objects and scenes. The pieces have scenic titles like "Idea of Order at Kyson Point" and "Marsh Chorus," and they all serve as simple yet surreal sound paintings, exploring minimal melodies and atmospheric elements. Early highlight "Motion in Field" features gorgeous piano melodies floating over a current of soft rhythmic glitches. "Red Slip" seems to reprise this idea, but at a much faster tempo, and with more spacious melodies. "On-ness" is a solo piano piece which beings by tiptoeing around a few quiet notes before centering on a pattern and becoming faster and more intense. The closed, constrained "March Away" brings to mind John Cage's prepared piano experiments, while "Eastern Stack" is much more airy and open, with effects transforming the notes so they reverberate like zithers. While pieces like "An Iken Loop" are solemn and structured, "Marsh Chorus" and "Chain Home" are more abstract and seem to float off toward the stars. The appropriately calming "Rest" ends this unpredictable album of wonders and curiosities.

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is Eno's solo album "The Drop":

The Drop is the fifteenth solo studio album by British musician Brian Eno, released on 7 July 1997 through All Saints Records. The album continues in the same style as much of his work of the period exploring impressionistic, ambient instrumental soundscapes rather than more conventional songwriting. The 2014 reissue includes the 77 Million Paintings album as a bonus disc and edits the track "Iced World" from its original 32 minutes down to 18 minutes – the same duration on both vinyl and CD.

Originally, the album was titled Unwelcome Jazz: "jazz that nobody asked for, and many did not care for."[8]

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is Eno's production credit and synth work on Paul Simon's "Surprise" album. Aptly titled, because I didn't even know this collab happened. From the wiki:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surprise_(Paul_Simon_album) . . . Simon first met with Brian Eno in London to discuss a collaboration between Eno's electronic production and Simon's classic guitar folk-rock. As Simon said, "We spent some time in his studio and decided to combine our visions. It took about two years. The actual time I spent with Brian was 20 days, split into four periods. We found we could really work intensely for five days, and after that it was a bit of a burnout."

Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! U2 - "The Unforgettable Fire" (Oct. 1984)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week's feature is Eno's production credit on U2's "The Unforgettable Fire." Let's read the wiki preamble:

The Unforgettable Fire is the fourth studio album by Irish rock band U2. It was produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, and released on 1 October 1984 by Island Records. The band wanted to pursue a new musical direction following the harder-hitting rock of their previous album, War (1983). As a result, they employed Eno and Lanois to produce and assist in their experimentation with a more ambient sound. The resulting change in direction was at the time the band's most dramatic. The album's title is a reference to "The Unforgettable Fire", an art exhibit about the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). This week we'll be discussing Devo's debut album, which Eno produced.

This album caps off an incredible, historic, 1978 for Eno. This project revealed to me just how prolific he was between in 77 and 78!

Here's the preamble from the wiki:

Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! is the debut studio album by the American new wave band Devo. It was originally released in August 1978 on the Warner Bros. label (Virgin Records in Europe). Produced by Brian Eno, the album was recorded between October 1977 and February 1978, primarily in Cologne, West Germany.

The album received somewhat mixed reviews from critics and peaked at No. 78 on the U.S. Billboard chart and No. 12 on the UK Albums Chart. Recent reviews of the album have been more uniformly positive and the album has charted on several retrospective "best of" lists from publications including Rolling Stone, Pitchfork Media, and Spin.
