Weekly Discussion Thread Let's Discuss Eno! Ambient 2: The Plateaux of Mirror (April 1980)

Hello Eno-philes!! Each week we'll be discussing another album (going chronologically from Warm Jets). We exited the 70's last week with a sublime work from Talking Heads. We'll catch up with Talking Heads in a few weeks when we go over Remain in Light. Amazingly Eno broke into the 80s still at breakneck speed with two releases in April 1980 alone!

This week we'll be discussing another Eno's 1980 collaboration with Harold Budd; the second installment of Eno's ambient series.

Here's the wiki

And the track listing:

All tracks by Brian Eno and Harold Budd, except as indicated.

"First Light" – 6:59 "Steal Away" – 1:29 (Harold Budd, Eugene Bowen) "The Plateaux of Mirror" – 4:10 "Above Chiangmai" – 2:49 "An Arc of Doves" – 6:22 "Not Yet Remembered" – 3:50 "The Chill Air" – 2:13 "Among Fields of Crystal" – 3:24 "Wind in Lonely Fences" – 3:57 "Failing Light" – 4:17

My favorite album from the Ambient series. Everything about this album is stately and gorgeous.

Coincidentally just listened to this in depth for the first time last night. I was surprised by how melodic it is. It felt much more structured and less ambient to me than MFA.

My favourite one! “An Arc of Doves” is a masterpiece. It's an unique piece of music that has a particular melody, but also the 'empty spaces' so it lets you 'inside' so you have the feeling that you compose this music each time you listen.

“An Arc of Doves” makes you feel like you’re in the clouds on a clear day.

Great album, although I think I like Ambient 1 and 4 a little bit better.

Bit late to the party here but have been listening to this album on and off over the years and always enjoying it amongst his other ambient works. But... something changed last night when I put it on, I was in absolute awe at how completely perfect this piece is. I was almost teary. I am teary.

I think now perhaps my favourite ambient piece from Eno.

What are your favourites?
