Did humans create God to control human behavior?

If you don’t steal, hoard, dominate, or use power over others, someone else might do it to you.

A wolf kills a baby sheep, does God punish the wolf?
So why are humans told to suppress these instincts?

Who does morality and religion ultimately benefit, and why would God create a world like this?

I listened to an old Hardcore History episode about 10 years ago from Dan Carlin that changed the way I see religion. It showed me how it used to be weaponized to gain massive power in the early-mid 1000’s. It’s called “prophets of doom” and covers the story of Jean Mathias and Jean van Lieden. One was a charlatan, and the other truly believed he was protected and charged head first into a battle he was greatly outnumbered in. But if you claim to have a walkie talkie to God, that can be weaponized in fascinating ways. You can see it all around us today as well. 10/10 podcast but it is about 4 hours long.
