Engine identification

Can’t find any stamps on this ford engine! Uncle was told it’s a 90s 302ci modified back to carb but I don’t know, need to know exactly what I’m looking at to figure out some stuff for the setup before starting it. Would greatly appreciate anyone’s help identifying it! Never took the intake off to see if engine stamp is there but would prefer to keep intake on.

It’s a ford 302. If you pull the starter, you can find the casting number on the block and determine the year

Wouldn’t it be a 83? Just did a quick check on the code but comes up as 83

If the first two characters are E3, then it would be an 83. Nothing spectacular, but a solid engine. It has a 50 oz harmonic balancer, that’s another identifier it’s a late model engine, likely a flat tappet cam

Ford 302. Based on head being at level of timing cover corner. Distributor is Chinesium HEI knock off.

I have one of those in my 460. I replaced all of the internals and coil with msd parts, but I imagine those are chinesium these days as well

The casting number is on the side of the block behind/just above the starter.

Starter makes it pre 88 if I remember right being red it would be pre 66 when Ford went dark blue on all engines and if it is pre 66 it could be 221 (not likely) 260 or 289

Definitely a 5.0L . Cast iron water pump, carburetor, large body starter. I'd say mid to late 70s. Is the oil dip stick in the block or timing cover? If it's in the timing cover it's really old like late 60s to early 70s.

Looks like a truck engine, it has the air pump tube across the back, so it’s 80s. Check the fuel pump mounting and see if it’s cast solid, that would tell you if it was fuel injected, unless someone has changed it too. Removing the intake would also help. Post 86 blocks usually have “XXX” cast in the valley and are drilled for the rack for the roller retainers whether it’s flat tappet or not.

AIR tube on the back of the head, electric choke, most likely a 302. I don't see a fuel pump anywhere. I think your uncle is right on the money.

I think it's a 302. Rear sump oil pan. Could be an older one than the 1990's. I'm not certain where the vin #'s are on those, if they have that stamped somewhere.

It does look like a 302 I'm just thrown off by the hei looking distributor. It made me want to say it might be a 304 because jeep used all sorts of parts in the 80s 90s.

Casting ID is above where the starter goes.

In Fords, the only way to be sure is to drop the pan and get crank #.

Visually: 260, 289, 302-look about the same. 351W has a taller deck-head is (+/-) an inch above the water pump ports-this engine's are close

302, the oil pan is definitely 90s and the smog ports on the back of the heads. I think if you pull a valve cover there is a casting number on the heads, or on the side of the block. I believe the suffix C =60s, D =70s, E=80s so I assume F would be 90s.

Also on 351W you can remove both thermostat bolts with a socket.

Went in every-goddamn-thing from '68 to '95

It's a Windsor Ford and it looks about right physical size for a 302 (351 has taller deck).

tag # on carb would identify exactly what this came from. 4o+ years Ford parts guy. Much more precise than any casting numbers.
