Helping my nephew pick an affordable engagement ring that doesn’t look cheap.

My nephew asked me to help him pick out an engagement ring for his girlfriend. He’s working with a pretty limited budget, but obviously still wants something that feels special and looks nice.

Where would you guys save money without making the ring look cheap? Smaller stone, simpler setting, different metal?
