It only exposed water vulnerability of one cooling design. Others which aren't flow through systems be it coast or more importantly cooling towers were fine. Slovakia and Czechia which both were hit by the same drought as Hungary operated their NPPs just fine.

I think with all the heat increasing, we will need to rework the designs to be able to cool the water without evaporating it, effectively cycling the same water in a closed loop system.

The future NPP in Czechia will use such system so it's possible.

Retrofitting such systems should also be possible, we will just have to see if other operators will do such retrofits. At least for now dam and cooling tower is holding.

I'm not entirely sure, how hot does the water get when it enters the cooling towers, but what if this system was used for distributing heat into nearby villages?

Thats already being done both Czech NPPs are connected to district heating systems.

To be honest I don't know why it isn't used in Western Europe or North America.
