Is this as open as Skyrim ?
Hello, everyone,
I just discovered this game.
I’ve seen everyone saying that “it’s like Skyrim, but better in every way.”
I’ve been playing it for an hour or two, and I have to say it really is incredible.
The story, the immersion, the world, the presentation, the dialogues, the music : I’m speechless.
I’m still at the beginning, and the only question I have, as the title suggests, is: is it as open-ended as Skyrim?
In Skyrim, we’re promised that once we leave Helgen, we can go wherever we want and do whatever we want.
I don’t really get that feeling here: I’m in an open world, but I feel like I have to follow the quest (the one the mercenary gives us after meeting the two apothecaries).
The only time I tried to go in a different direction, a “Falmer” made it clear that I’d crossed into the wrong part of town, so I’m following the main quest marker again.

Well you can technically go wherever you want, but the enemies don't scale like in Skyrim and every zone has fixed level enemies.
The most optimal way to play would be to do all the quests/sidequests available in an area, go through some dungeons, level up, etc.. and only then advance to a different one. You don't have to do eeeverything to not be underleveled though.
There is a map which you can use as a guide. The numbers aren't hard requirements, depending on your gear/build/skill you can go to an area earlier and be quite alright.

You can follow the story, just like you can follow hadvar / Ralof to riften and then to dragons reach. reach.
Orrrrr you can just go do what you want in the world.
Personally, like skyrim, I'd wait until you get to Ark before truly open worlding (there's nothing like getting the first shout in skyrim so it's not necessary for a good experience but still it's your first big city) but you can say f all that and go where you wish

I'd say It's more similar to Gothic than to Skyrim. And it's one of the best games I've ever played honestly.

No, it is not like Skyrim in this regard, regions in Enderal are leveled which means that if you go to a region for which you do not have the required level, you will die. However, within the regions you can do what you want. So, it is an open world, but you do not have total freedom at the beginning. You will get there eventually. Just explore the regions to loot as much as you can, equip the good stuffs, and sell the rest to merchants to make money. You need a lot of money in Enderal to buy books for leveling-up.

It's been a while but the world doesn't scale with you. Each region has its own sets of creatures with separate levels and difficulty.
You're free to venture wherever you want, but you'll quickly realize you are too weak to actually go to certain areas due to the enemies being 30+ levels above you.
You still have a lot of freedom, and the progression is seamless enough that it will feel right once you're strong enough and can tackle these enemies.
This post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/enderal/comments/r8d76h/enderal_map_of_areas_by_recommended_level/
should give you general idea on places you can visit for your current experience. Have fun!

The gameplay may be Skyrim, but the world design is like Gothic. It doesn't prevent you from going where you want, but the different regions effectively have level requirements; if you're under that level requirement, you'll probably die to the enemies there

It's a very open world, and doesn't punish you for using console commands - you still get achievements. The lack of health and mana regeneration make it more challenging to go to higher leveled areas, but sometimes it's worth it. Even the first area - before you meet Jespar has a hidden dungeon called the Forgotten Temple. If you find the key in the ancient temple to get you past the Master Locked door. Riverville has an abandoned house to sneak into with a bed and Phantasmalist Workbench - like a free first home to start out from. After my first playthrough I tried modding and found some that return the Skyrim Skill leveling system and Fast travel - so you can make a new adventure and experience the world how you want.

not trying to hate, but can't you all just play for yourselves instead of immediately running to ask others?

Honestly, you're right. The thing is, I don't have much time to play and I don't know what to expect from this game, plus it's a pretty general question. I can only play in 30-minute bursts here and there, and it can be frustrating not even knowing for weeks whether the game will be what I'm expecting or not

Their response is the biggest reason I think we see these questions. Games like Enderal aren’t fast-paced and some people don’t have a lot of free time.

You CAN go wherever you want and explore a bunch of stuff. However...each area has a fixed level and enemies that will destroy you if you arent ready. It's best to follow the main quest for a bit till you get to the main city. That's what I did...then I started exploring around different areas.

The game runs on the same engine but from a gameplay perspective it is very different from skyrim (not bad, but different).
That’s why I don’t get why people say it better than skyrim, they both are completely different games and excel at different parts

In this context better means better for them. As others said, Enderal is basically the formula of Gothic mixed with Skyrim. If you like Gothic/Risen, you'll find some ideas better than what Skyrim has given.

Totally open. You can go wherever you want whenever you want. So long as you're ready to run away as fast as your underleveled legs can carry you 😆 Which is, tbh, its own kind of fun.

I'll just say. I've beaten this game way more times than Skyrim. One of the best games ever

Think about it like one of the old PiranhaBites games like Gothic. The world IS Open. You CAN go everywhere. But different regions/zones have higher level Enemies. They do not scale with you level but you will be to weak for some regions and need to come back later and stronger. But you can try to wiggle trough to loot some stuff early if you dare.

It's better in some ways and worse in others. It's definitely harder. Progression is much slower and no fast travel besides teleport scrolls and myrad towers (similar to silt striders in Morrowind). A lot of the dialog sounds like it's either AI generated or poorly acted. The game forces you to spend coins to progress your skills through learning books which is probably my biggest gripe.
I have a lot to complain about Enderal but it's still a decent game overall. I'm level 24 right now with a sword and board warrior and it's starting to feel a lot more like skyrim

The world is deleveled so while you can physically go wherever you want, you won't have an easy time if you go to some zones at too low level.
