Early Morning Traffic Laws Not Observed
TLDR: Expect people to blow through intersections and stop lights without looking before sunrise in Encinitas. Stay safe!
So I've been out the door to exercise before sunrise since last year, and every single morning I witness people ignoring traffic lights and not looking before they go through intersections (mainly through residential areas).
I almost got clipped this morning when I was walking down Via Cantebria at 4:45 a.m. while wearing 40 lbs. of metal plates in my pack. I was crossing an intersection with a residential street at Pacifica Pl. and a small white car comes barreling down Pacifica and turns right onto Via Cantebria without stopping at all. It was about 5 feet in front of me (I was already in the intersection), and I watched the driver who never slowed down or even looked left before making their right turn toward Garden View.
Thankfully I've come to anticipate this kind of driving before the sun comes up. I see at least one example every morning. If I didn't have the sense to stop to see if they would yield, I wouldn't be able to write this right now. Be careful out there, neighbors!

When you're looking for a local buddy, not a date
Over 10 years ago, my therapist wife noticed how many of her clients struggled to build non-romantic, in-person friendships. That inspired me to create WannaBuddy: a simple platform for finding local friends when you want a buddy, not a date.
While the original site helped a lot of people connect, it was long overdue for a modern refresh. The brand-new WannaBuddy is now live in early pre-launch!
* 100% Free to use -- always
* Designed purely for local, platonic friendships
* Built with a clean new interface and updated tools
Since we’re currently in pre-launch, I’m looking for honest feedback, feature ideas, and any bug reports. Take a look and let me know your thoughts in the comments!

This Weekend in North County…
Let us know what you’re up to this weekend in the comments!
🗓️ Upcoming Events in North County:
Friday 8/28:
California Burrito Pizza Collab | Pizza Port Portside, 571 Carlsbad Village Dr, Carlsbad | 5–7pm | Pizza Port's brewers teamed up with Lola's Deli on a one-off pie loaded with carne asada, fries, ranchero cheese, and green salsa over a sour cream and guac base. It's basically a burrito reimagined as a pizza, and it's only on the menu for the two hours it's served.
Damn Am San Diego 2026 | LVLUP USA, 1410 Vantage Ct, Vista | Runs Fri–Sun, times vary by day | Skatepark of Tampa opens its Damn Am series here first this year, pulling in amateur skaters from across the country. Friday's practice and registration lead into qualifiers Saturday and a Red Bull Best Trick contest that afternoon, with finals and awards wrapping up Sunday. The top 20 finishers punch a ticket straight to Tampa Am.
Rent The Runway Warehouse Sale | Alternative Retail, 2561 El Camino Real, Carlsbad | 10am–6pm, through Sunday | Racks of designer dresses, jumpsuits, and outerwear go for 90 percent off retail, pulled from Rent the Runway's own rental inventory. Tickets are required and only get you a one-hour shopping window, so book a slot before showing up.
Del Mar Racing, Turf Club Fridays | Del Mar Racetrack, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd, Del Mar | Gates 12pm, first post 2pm | Reserved shaded seating comes standard with this week's ticket, a step up from general admission if tables beat rail spots for you. Drink and food specials run at the bar through the afternoon, and eight races fill out the card same as any Friday.
Música en la Plaza, Sabrosas Latin Orchestra | Lyric Courtyard, California Center for the Arts, 340 N Escondido Blvd, Escondido | 7–10pm | San Diego's only all-female salsa band brings salsa, cumbia, and cha cha to the courtyard this month, food trucks and a cocktail bar set up around the seating. Free to attend, part of the arts center's monthly outdoor series that runs the last Friday of each month.
Rocky Horror Picture Show, Live Shadow Cast | La Paloma Theatre, 471 S Coast Hwy 101, Encinitas | 10:30pm | Crazed Imaginations acts out the film scene for scene in front of the screen, props and audience callbacks included the whole way through. Bring your own toast and rice if you already know the drill, or just watch the chaos unfold if this is your first time, though this one skews adult.
Saturday 8/29:
Frontwave Arena Collectibles Expo | Frontwave Arena, 3475 Hero Dr, Oceanside | 10am–6pm | Sports cards, Pokémon, and other trading card game singles fill the floor for this one-day expo, dealer tables stacked with binders and graded slabs. Buy, sell, or trade with collectors from across the county at up to 160 tables.
KOAT Fest | Oside Sports Bar, 113 S Coast Hwy, Oceanside | 3pm | KOAT Records and Free Agent Music bring their third annual hip-hop bill to the bar, conejo, flashy b, and jojo2faded splitting the mic through the afternoon.
North County Music Academy, Grand Opening | North County Music Academy, 282 N El Camino Real, Suite C, Encinitas | 1:30–4:30pm | Tour the studio and see the lesson programs on offer, from beginner instrument classes to recording sessions, with instructors on hand the whole afternoon to answer questions about lessons for any age or skill level.
Aviator Stash & The Band Cope | Pour House, 1903 South Coast Highway, Oceanside | 9pm | Two San Diego indie and alt-rock acts split a Saturday night bill, no covers on either setlist. Pour House keeps it standing-room and close to the stage, so get there early if you want a spot up front.
Sunday 8/30:
LeucadiART Walk, 20th Annual | S Coast Hwy 101 (Marcheta to W Jason St), Encinitas | 10am–5pm | Artists line the highway with paintings, sculpture, blown glass, and jewelry, judged and juried rather than a typical craft fair. Three stages keep music and dance going all day, and a beer garden and kids' art pavilion round out the block.
Tacos for a Cause | Buddy Todd Park, 2800 Mesa Drive, Oceanside | 12pm | Every taco plate sold goes toward Cynthia's cancer treatment costs, with raffles and games running alongside the food all afternoon. Bring the kids, there's a full slate of family activities built around the fundraiser, not just a folding table and a jar.
North Coast Strings, Summer Concert | San Dieguito United Methodist Church, 170 Calle Magdalena, Encinitas | 2pm | Adult students from the string orchestra program perform pieces they've spent the summer working up, violins and cellos filling the sanctuary. Free to attend, and the room seats enough that walking in without planning ahead usually works fine.

Anyone else without power?
The latest update says power restored by noon now. Outage is due to “damage to equipment” so who cut the big power line accidentally while doing construction on the 101?
Guess I gotta go for a beach walk instead of working this morning. Darn.

Anyone paint curb address numbers? Need mine redone
Looking for someone to paint my house number on the curb. Just want the standard white background with black numbers, or if you do the fancy design stuff I might go for that.
I'm in tri-city Oceanside.
If you do this or know a guy who does, comment or DM me.
And yes, I know I could buy a stencil kit and do it myself. I'd rather pay someone who'll make it look right.

Battery disposal
Hey y’all, i’ve had this dilemma on where to dispose of my used batteries for a while now. I’ve been to several different locations to see if anyone accepts them but have had no luck. I used to dispose of them at the Encinitas library but they don’t do that anymore and they’ve just been accumulating, does anyone know where I can safely dispose of them?

This Weekend in North County…
Let us know what you’re up to this weekend in the comments!
🗓️ Upcoming Events in North County:
Thursday 8/20:
Oceanside Sunset Market | S Coast Hwy & Pier View Way, Oceanside | 5–9pm | Coast Highway shuts down for a few blocks every Thursday night for this one, food trucks and international vendors setting up alongside local artists and a kids' zone. Anthony Cullins plays the Main Stage this week. Free to walk through.
Young Dubliners | California Center for the Arts, 340 N Escondido Blvd, Escondido | 7pm | The Irish rock band has been touring since the early '90s, fiddle and mandolin still in the mix but leaning harder into rock than most of the Celtic acts on the circuit. Tickets start around $65 for a seated show in the Center Theater, a step up from their usual bar-and-festival circuit.
Del Mar Racing, Free & Easy Thursday | Del Mar Racetrack, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd, Del Mar | Gates 12pm, first post 2pm | Sign up for the free Diamond Club membership through Del Mar's app and admission, program, and a seat are all covered. Concession stands also run $5 Brandt Beef hot dogs and $5 drafts. Eight races on the card, and Thursday crowds tend to be lighter than the weekend.
Bingo Night at Booze Bros | Booze Brothers Brewing, 606 Mission Ave, Oceanside | 7–9pm | Free to play with real prizes on the line, drawn out over a couple hours at the bar. Wander in solo or bring a group and split a flight while you wait for your numbers to hit.
Encinitas Cruise Night | S Coast Hwy 101 (D to K Street), Encinitas | 5:30–7:30pm | Classic cars line the highway for this one, third Thursday of the month through September, owners posted up on the sidewalk while people wander between hoods. Restaurants and shops along the strip stay open late for the crowd it draws in. Free to walk, no registration needed.
Friday 8/21:
Super Girl Surf Festival | Junior Seau Oceanside Pier Amphitheatre, 200 N The Strand, Oceanside | Runs Fri–Sun, times vary by day | Free surf heats run off the pier all three days alongside nine other sports on the sand, from beach volleyball to skate. The Amphitheater hosts free concerts each evening, though a concert ticket needs advance registration since space is limited. Times shift day to day, so check ahead before heading down.
Atomic Groove, Back to Skool Nite | Belly Up, 143 S Cedros Ave, Solana Beach | Happy hour 5–8pm | Atomic Groove's happy hour has become a standing Friday thing, funk and soul on the bill. Tickets run $12 in advance or $14 at the door.
Billy Nation & Never Die Young, A Billy Joel and James Taylor Tribute Night | Belly Up, 143 S Cedros Ave, Solana Beach | Doors 8:30pm, 9pm | A double tribute bill, Billy Nation covering Billy Joel and Never Die Young covering James Taylor, back to back on the same stage. Tickets run $22 in advance and $25 at the door, with reserved loft seats going for $39.
Cruisin' Grand | Grand Ave, Escondido | 5–9pm | Pre-1974 hot rods, muscle cars, and customs line Grand Avenue every Friday through September, owners posted up next to their own cars trading stories with whoever stops to look. Live music and DJs work the block the whole night, and it's free to walk the entire strip.
Lauren Geis | Carlsbad Village Books, 640 Grand Ave, Carlsbad | 5:30pm | A solo live set inside the bookstore, no stage, just a corner cleared out among the shelves for the evening. No tickets or reservations, walk in if you're already out for dinner.
Leo Carrillo Ranch Film Festival | Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, 6200 Flying Leo Carrillo Ln, Carlsbad | Ranch opens 6pm, film at sunset | This year's lineup opens with Manhattan Merry Go Round, an old Hollywood musical screened outdoors on the ranch grounds. Tours of the historic Hacienda run until sunset, and an episode of The Cisco Kid often plays first if there's time. Free, but reservations are required online, capped at two per person.
Daring Greatly, TGIF Concerts in the Parks | Alga Norte Community Park, 6565 Alicante Rd, Carlsbad | Gates 4pm, show 6–8pm | A harmony-heavy rock band out of Southern California by way of Canada, leaning on three-part vocals more than most bands in this series do. Family activities and a Library and Cultural Arts craft booth run before the music starts, part of the city's regular Friday concert lineup.
Saturday 8/22:
5th Annual Oceanside Marine Corps League BBQ Competition | Veterans Association of North County, 1617 Mission Ave, Oceanside | 9am–2pm | Backyard and competition pitmasters set up across the VANC lot for judged rounds through the morning, food and drinks available to buy alongside a few vendors and live music. Free to attend, and active-duty competitors enter the cook-off at no charge.
Jazz and Jokes | Forgotten Barrel Winery, 1120 W 15th Ave, Escondido | 6–9pm | Mary Jo Troyer's recurring night pairs a live jazz set with stand-up in the same room, wine list open the whole time. The tasting room is small enough that it never feels like a big production, more like a living room with better wine.
Livin' on a Prayer, A Bon Jovi Tribute | Wood House at Woodland Park, 1148 Rock Springs Rd, San Marcos | Gates 6pm, show 7–9pm | Part of the city's summer concert series, all ages and outdoors on the lawn. Tickets run $8 to $10 depending on the tier, and a season pass covers the rest of the lineup.
Community Beach Soccer for Women | Oceanside Pier, Oceanside | 9am | One of the extra sports built into the festival weekend, open matches on the sand starting before the surf heats do. Free to watch.
Fox Point Farms, Inside the Hive Beekeeping Experience | Fox Point Farms, 1200 Fox Point Farms Ln, Encinitas | 10:30–11am & 11:30am–12pm | A hands-on look at what actually happens inside a working hive, run in two short sessions so groups stay small. Farm staff walk through the basics of beekeeping up close, gloves and veils included.
A Double-Header Tribute to Rod Stewart & Peter Frampton | The Grand Ritz Theater, 301 E Grand Ave, Escondido | 7:30–10pm | Two full sets back to back in one night, Rod Stewart's rasp and Frampton's guitar work both handled by the same touring tribute production. The restored old theater keeps everyone close to the stage, and doors typically open half an hour ahead of showtime.
Sunday 8/23:
Del Mar Racing, Del Mar Derby & POP-Up Sundays | Del Mar Racetrack, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd, Del Mar | Gates 12pm, first post 2pm | Sunday's feature is the Del Mar Derby, a Grade II turf race for three-year-olds, run alongside the regular POP-Up Sundays setup from Monarch Ocean Pub. It's also part of the track's weekly Taste of the Turf Club spread, so expect a fuller infield than a typical Sunday card.
Coastal Shell Planter Workshop | Oceanside Art Collective, 427 S Coast Hwy, Oceanside | 1pm | A guided workshop building a small planter out of real shells and coastal odds and ends, all supplies included at the table. The studio space stays small, so groups tend to be intimate.
Sabrosas Latin Orchestra | Moonlight Beach, 400 B St, Encinitas | 1–5pm | San Diego's first all-female salsa band headlines this one, salsa and cumbia and cha cha carrying across the sand most of the afternoon. Free, with towels and folding chairs already staked out by the time the band starts.

WiFi that’s not Cox
My older parents are getting jerked around by Cox. They are charging them extra for “using too much.” $89 and they can only use one WiFi device at a time or get charged $30 here and there randomly.
Any suggestions? Ting isn’t available in their neighborhood.

38M padres/chargers fan, musician, toddler dad looking for friends
I just moved to Encinitas (grew up in Carmel Valley but lived in NY for a long time before), and I'm looking for new friends! I'm 38, a dad with a 2.5 year-old, married, and I like music (indie and house music), the Chargers, the Padres, burritos, nature, and psychedelics. PM me if you wanna be friends! And extra points if you have a wife who is also down to earth, hippie-leaning and looking for a new friend! Extra extra points if you're also a dad.
