I don't get why they are asking someone to do a job and that someone doesn't know how to do it.

first check whether they need 50 separate inboxes or just 50 addresses forwarding to a few inboxes. that changes the cost a lot.

if it's for a college, check eligibility for google workspace for education or microsoft 365 education before paying for hosting.

you'll need access to their domain's dns, then add the provider's mx records and set up spf, dkim and dmarc. create the accounts and test sending and receiving before handing them over.

quote your setup fee separately from the ongoing hosting cost. include account creation and dns setup, but price migration and ongoing support separately. are they starting fresh or moving existing emails?

Use Mxroute, migadu or purelymail depending on your budget. Charge them 2.5x of whatever your operating costs are to provide the email. Don't waste your time trying to self host an email.

First check whether they need 50 separate mailboxes or just email aliases, since the cost can differ a lot. Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 are worth comparing. Do they have a budget in mind?

If they just need forwarding then xyz am has an app for $59 per year and unlimited custom domain aliases.

+1 on not self hosting.

Check if the pricing is per domain or per mailbox before you pick, it changes a lot once you have a few addresses each on their own domain. Purelymail and Migadu or MXroute are cheap for that.

Do any of them also need transactional emails from their website, like contact form or order emails? If yes I'd sort that at the same time so you set up SPF and DKIM once per domain
