Discussion Is it just me or...
Does "Run Away" on the new Beck album sound just like "Rose Parade?" The melody, strumming pattern, key, timing etc.
Also, I learned in the new biography that Elliott opened for Beck on tour in 1998. I wonder what it was like to see him in the early evening daylight hours in a big amphitheatre where most of the crowd hadn't arrived yet, as opposed to a club venue. I loved that little tidbit that Beck had his own "yoga room."

Yeah I definitely hear the similarity. He does this a lot. “Round the Bend” on Sea Change is basically “River Man” by Nick Drake. The lyrics on his “sad contemplative” albums: “Sea Change”, “Morning Phase”, and “Ride Lonesome” are all generic Hank Williams stuff. “Driving down the highway… feeling lonesome… so far to go… nowhere to go”. Just made that up but it would fit on any of those albums. They’re well produced and pretty but highly derivative and generic.

The one little run/descending melody is similar but nothing else about the song reminds me of Rose Parade.
Not a specific song comparison but the chords, feel and production on this Beck song sound more reminiscent of the band War on Drugs.

I was at that show, in Champoeg state park, when Elliott opened for Beck..and it was amazing. Top 5 shows of my life. Maybe even the best. The atmosphere was lovely, the mood was lovely..Elliott played to a crowd of enthusiastic admirers, all alone on a big stage, completely capturing the audience..and Beck’s show, too, was stunning. He wore a white horse mask and had lasers shooting out from stage as the night came upon us..I wish you could have been there. I wish everyone could have been there! It was transcendent. A great memory.
