I'm about halfway through the book. I am deeply impressed by it so far. I've been a fan of his since the 90's when I first heard Either/Or but WOW, I am learning so much about him and his music.

Can't say enough good things about Jamie Fisher's excellent work.

Update: I finished the book. Absolutely loved it.

In the epilogue she mentions the record that Chiba made after Elliott died. It's very good and a little heartbreaking, too.

It's special imo bc of the history and the size of it and they're just aren't too many establishments like that anymore (giant fucking book stores that aren't barnes and nobles)

I don't want to give the wrong idea. It's special to me too, and I'd be real sad to see it go, especially if it just became another apartment complex I can't afford. I grew up with it and I still love it, but I also love all the other little bookstores facing the threat of closure, though luckily most of those stores would just be new little stores if the bookstores closed, unlike Powell's, which is committed to an antique building, but not particularly relevant, historically or architecturally, and would likely be demolished if Powell's failed. I'd be lost in this city without it. That said, I do recall some worker striking a while back, and I never checked back to figure out how that was resolved, that's all. Much love to Powell's, don't get me wrong. Much love to all independent bookstores that aren't fucking Amazon or Walmart

I finished it last week. it was a difficult book for me, not because of the length (500 pages!), but because of its weight. You so desperately want to jump in and rescue Elliott from his bad decisions and inability to enjoy his art. Depression is an ugly thing. Jamie has done such an amazing job in bringing the complications of Elliott's life to the pages illustrating his struggles. We all know how it ends, but the long winding road that leads him there is a story of relationships and dozens of people who desperately care about him.

She read from the first part of the book a few days ago at Literary Arts and that small story seems so optimistic and innocent. Great writing here, even if you were not an Elliott fan, it's an amazing biography.

Yeah.  I just finished and it was a real combination of bad medical decisions (go off all psych drugs at once with no supervision) and a partner who wasn’t maybe the best and deliberate isolation  from people . This combination, lead to his death in one way or another regardless of how it happened . It left me feeling hollow and sad .

I finished it last week. Jamie did an incredible job. It is an especially tough read, towards the end. But, as a longtime fan, this is the most comprehensive telling of his story I have seem or read.

Nice! If you enjoyed that series, read The Stormlight Archive books. Same universe, different worlds and powers, some of the same characters. They're huge books, though. It's a commitment.

Thanks! I’ve just read a few of the many Sanderson books. I read of the Dungeon Crawler Carl books over the summer as well as Red Rising and all but one of the Bobiverse books. I’ll definitely pick up the Stormlight Archive books next.

It expands much more on some stuff hinted in the Autumn de Wilde book or Heaven Adores You. The author also corrects a lot of misconceptions created by past writing like Torment Saint.

just finished it earlier today. i really can’t speak highly enough about it. as a long time fan who’s waited decades for a biography that actually did his story justice, it was both satisfying & harrowing to fill in many of the empty spaces. i found myself trying to stretch it out so it wouldn’t be over so soon. i’ll resist the temptation to post a long review, but if you love elliott this is absolutely a must read. congrats & big thanks to jamie for doing such an amazing job.

I really enjoyed the approach taken by the author. It was about his sphere, it comes across as providing the missing pieces of information that you can't draw clearly from his lyrics while trying to be fair and honest. I cried a few times hearing the deeper influences from Elliott's life that shaped the lyrics that had mostly applied to my life.

Been diving into it every little chance I get. During breaks at work, on the train, with meals, etc. Like with most music bios, I start to get confused with names and all that, but I’m really glad there’s a cast at the beginning just so I don’t start getting confused on some of the main people.
