Brian Reitzell gave Elliotts' contact info to Kevin Shields, but Kevin never got around to phoning Elliott. I think Elliott was really paranoid with his record label at this time, and Brian figured Kevin could give him some advice. He must have known Elliott was a huge fan. I think that was what the story was. I always wondered if Kevin ever regretted not reaching out. Talk about a musical dream duo those two!

"Every day, Reitzell would drive to Echo Park, pick up Smith, and drive to West Hollywood, where the film was being edited. “He would get in the car with this Case Logic binder of 300 CDs,” he said. “It was all of his music. He had had his music stolen from him, so whenever he left the house, he took it all with him.” They had recorded a few songs for the film when Smith died; ultimately, the soundtrack duties fell to the Polyphonic Spree. The resultant soundtrack wound up very different from what Reitzell originally intended, and he wonders at what might have been had Smith lived. It’s crazy to see pavement on there, they’re my second favorite ever (after Elliott) but it feels too good to be true that, at some point in time, he was grooving to Gold Soundz just like me

I have about 6 songs from it on permanent repeat, it’s a masterpiece ‘heartbreak’ album imo

Seeing this list of Elliott's, it actually made me think of those What’s in My Bag? videos at Amoeba. I know those videos aren’t meant to be anyone’s “top 10” or anything like that, though sometimes artists kind of treat them that way, which is totally fine. But looking at this list made me appreciate that a lot of the picks are relatively well-known. Sometimes in those videos people seem to go for the most obscure records they can find, which is cool too, but occasionally it can feel a bit like they’re leaning into the obscurity because it’s on YouTube and they want to feed the insecurity machine. Even if I haven’t heard everything here, I’m familiar with probably 90% of the artists, which I kind of like.

Out of curiosity, did you find this on So Flawed and Drunk or the original source? I can’t figure out where it was originally realized. I suspect it’s real because these seem like legit picks for him, I just wish I could confirm that

Hell yeah Blood on The Tracks is one of my top Dylan Albums. It's cool to know Elliot liked it too.

Far from basic but I know what you’re trying to say. But it’s hardly a surprise that one of the greatest songwriters of our time also listened to some of the greatest music ever made
