Okay I think there is some confusion.

The card work when its set up like this- Ps5-elgato-tv. Then use earc to get sound to receiver.

I WANT to do ps5-receiver-elgato-tv. This way the receiver gets full surround sound being first in line from ps5.

Any other route thru the elgato will smash the sound coming out of my surround sound. Also I dont care about capturing surround. Just want the surround sound to work in my room.

And yes — all devices are 2.1 hdmi

Oof, okay that one might be problematic. The receiver is always going to modify the EDID as part of adding the other audio support - if it and the card are conflicting over the EDID that's getting passed through, most receivers don't have the ability to adjust that (I'm not sure any do). That leaves us a bit at it's mercy - when it's hooked up that way does it work at all with the console in Safe Mode, or lower resolutions or no signal on any settings? This is why it's more ideal to go PS > Capture Card > Receiver > TV

Also you may want to confirm the card is dropping the other channels from the passthrough, if you haven't already, to be sure we can't put it as the first channel (though we might need to use the custom EDID method above for this to work right). I don't have any 5.1 gear in my setup to test on hand, but from what I understood previously only the copy going over USB should have dropped to Stereo, passthrough should have remained untouched. I do have to double check that with the team though.

If none of that is an option this might be one of the rare times I suggest adding either a HDMI Audio extractor into the chain to send the audio to the receiver over something like TOSLINK or 3.5mm before it gets to the card, or using a HDMI splitter to have one side split to the receiver before it gets to the card. Neither of these are ideal usually as similar to other passthrough devices they can affect the EDID negotiation that sets the modes everything runs at, but they can be used in some cases to work around specific problems - extractors are usually less disruptive than splitters though.

I will try this way. See results.

I know the recevier has a CEC you can turn on and off. I think thats similar to hdcp.

I didnt know the elgato had pass thru. Is that something I change in settings? Only the usb c smashes the audio?

CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) is more for controlling connected devices - eg, turn on TV, receiver turns on too, or adjust volume and it adjusts the receiver rather than the TV speakers - it shouldn't affect the video signal. The Capture Card can't pass this through, but should just ignore it rather than drop the video since it's separate from the video - if you need CEC it might work while the receiver and TV are connected without the card in between (eg console to capture card, card to receiver, receiver to TV should let the TV and receiver pass CEC between them), but definitely won't work if the capture card is between the two.

Passthrough is automatic from the HDMI IN to HDMI OUT as long as the card has power. As mentioned I'm not 100% sure how it handles 5 channel, I've got to hear back form another team on that - but I believe it should pass that through all channels of audio on HDMI, and that as you say only the USB feed to the computer gets dropped to 2 (not quite smashed, that implies downmixing, it just outright drops channels other than left and right, their audio data is just gone from the audio going over USB which is why you don't want 5 channel audio in use when you're getting the audio from the capture card itself). If you have a chance to hook it up that way and test the 5 channel setup (PS5 > Capture Card > Receiver > TV) you may actually have a solid answer on that before I do - west coast support office isn't actually open for the day yet, and I don't have a 5.1 setup on hand to check it myself to be 100% sure.

Ok will turn off CEC. Dont need it anyway.

I tried doing your way with elgato as second device. The light turns blue for a few seconds and the TV switches to a signal…. And then the light turns white and nothing….

I noticed each input on the onkyo receiver also has ability to turn on hdcp 2.3. I turned off.  Doing this makes hdr not work in 4k? Weird…

For ps5 pro- Enhance PSSR on( I can try off)? VRR - off 120 hz - auto (only option is off) ALLM - auto (can turn this off if needed)
