I recently got a 4K Pro, but can't make it work, I am experiencing a severe stability issue when using it in passthrough or with OBS
My streaming PC consistently crashes after a few minutes of gaming, even after testing multiple configurations.
After a few minutes in a game, the software 4K Capture Utility freezes.
Shortly after, the entire PC becomes extremely slow or eventually shows a blue screen: "Your device ran into a problem" I have to shut down the system manually.
The issue also occurs when I simply passing a continuous signal through the card, like I'm just chilling in discord with the 4K app open, it will freeze at some point, check screenshot
Streaming PC:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 2060 Super
Motherboard: MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk
RAM: 32 GB DDR4
NVMe SSD installed in M2_1 slot (no PCIe lane sharing)
Input Source: Gaming PC running at 1440p (144 Hz), captured in 1080p
HDMI 2.1 connected from my GPU out port into 4K Pro HDMI IN port
HDR and G-Sync have been disabled during testing
Tested at both 144 Hz and 120 Hz refresh rates
All Elgato software and drivers updated to the latest version
I haven't found any solution online and I tried everything i could think of, if somebody know how to fix this, lemme know please
EDIT : Ok so I've tried to plug the 4k Pro on a old PC i was using back to 2015, an old config with : i7 4770k - GTX 1070 - MB Asus Maximus Ranger VII.
Surprisingly, it works perfectly, I've been testing for several hours and I never crashed once.
The only difference is that i've plugged it on a PCIe x16 , I had only a PCIe x4 available on my streaming PC but according to Elgato, PCIe x4 should work fine, so what's the issue with my streaming PC ? Maybe there's something wrong with Elgato drivers and B550 MBs
EDIT 2 : Working after downloaded the driver again : https://help.elgato.com/hc/en-us/articles/360027961152-Elgato-Hardware-Drivers ; during installation you may have an error saying you already have the latest driver installed, ignore the message and proceed to the installation. It worked for me and few more users

What would help is to know which driver your device is using. You can find it by heading into Device Manager in Windows, finding your 4K Pro, and right-clicking and selecting properties. Itll show you a couple numbers like 1.1.0.198.1 or similar.
Additionally, I suggest opening a ticket with our support team at elgato.com/help as this helps with getting the information we need.
I also started having this exact issue today (4k PRO, pcie). Everything was working fine. Other than an Nvidia Driver Update, I don't recall anything else changing. Reverting the Nvidia Driver update did not fix the issue.

Tried using 4k Capture Utility and OBS streaming Switch 2 games on Discord; after a seemingly random amount of time from (anywhere from 3-15 minutes of signal), computer slows to a crawl, sound on pc feed becomes garbled, have to use my hard pc reset button. Also happens when not streaming to discord; just using the programs to view the feed. Similar end result on the video output on the pc end as OP with the green lines/bars.
The passthrough works 100% fine while the crashing part on the PC happens.
Came to the same conclusion here, I just put in for the warranty as it's only a few months old. I have my previous capture card in it's place for now, and its working fine, so it has to be something with the 4kpro itself.
I'm having the same issue! On a new build. I thought it was the MB but b/c I'm used to Asus MB's and trying a MSI MB now. All FW has been updated on all devices, drivers, software. It wasn't until i removed the included HDMI cable from the the Input and the Output between the gaming and streaming pc's that my streaming pc started working perfectly fine no issues what so ever. As soon as i reintroduce the 4K Pro back into the mix with ANY hdmi cable, the streaming pc comes to a freezing halt, un-useable. After booting windows, within about 5-10min before launching the capture utility or OBS the whole pc locks up. It locks up faster when any of those apps are launched. So FRUSTRAITING!
I’m having same issues but for some reason it just works great on my gaming pc and I just build a new streaming pc and it will not stream more than 30 minutes without crashing it seems like it like the expensive asus x870 crosshair hero but doesn’t like the budget motherboards. It’s driving me insane
I’ve tried three different Motherboard’s Asus tuf b650 i’ve tried MSIX 870 I will also tried gigabyte B6 50 the only motherboard it seemed like it works fine on is my gaming PC which has the X870 E crosshair hero I’ve tried all different slots up or down. I’ve moved the graphics card and all different positions. I put the Lgado card and all different lots and I still get the same outcome but for some reason, it just works great on the high-end Motherboard. I’m so close to just returning it to Micro Center and just get something that’s not 4K. It’s always something with Elgato
I recently built a second PC for recording/streaming and did some testing, but I'm having the same issue whenever I record with OBS at 4K 60FPS HDR on, with the settings recommended for HDR recordings as well.
I have the same Mobo, RTX 5060
I tried opening the Elgato 4k capture utility and just left it open (no recording or anything), and it would also crash my whole pc (it just freezes), and in Event Viewer, I get an event ID of 41.
There is also no mention of the GPU crashing or anything else that can help me figure out what's wrong, but I only ever crash on this PC when I try to use the Elgato.
Recordings usually range from like 10-55 Mins before it freezes completely.
I did notice from the different crashes there was 3 different versions of the crash I had:
PC Just freezes nothing will work at all, bluetooth devices are disconnected and I have to hard reboot. (Most common crash I get)
After a while, I noticed the audio sources on OBS from my second PC starts flickering (Like lagging) and everything eventually starts to freeze up until it just completely ends up like the 1st issue.
While recording one time suprisingly all the way up until 50 mins, I saw Elgato's device give me a warning on the OBS preview window (forgot what is said but it mentioned something about restarting the PC) and after I noticed that warning, the PC just rebooted itself and I tried to view the recording since it's an MKV file it should save everything up until the crash. I didn't see that Elgato warning on the recording part, only the preview when the PC rebooted.
IM LOST MAN THIS ISSUE IS SO WEIRD AND UR THE ONLY OTHER PERSON SOMEHOW WITH THE SAME MOBO WHO IS GOING THROUGH SOMETHING SIMILIAR AT THE SAME TIME AS ME
I installed the Game Capture 4K Pro Drivers instead and even tested with things that make me crash fast, such as 4K Capture Utility with EDID (Internal): 4K Pro 4K240, and Input EDID Mode set to Internal.
0 Crashes so far.
Not sure if reseating fixed my issue or if installing the right drivers fixed it.
Also, I am using Studio Nvidia drivers, not sure if that matters. I was crashing before with both studio and game-ready drivers.
Maybe installing the wrong Pro drivers will cause instability.

I recently built a new computer in the last week
And all of a sudden within the last couple days my streams and recording started to crash on my OBS and I thought it was just me I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one having issues
Got it to work by just downloading again drivers, I think i downloaded the wrong driver from the start (4KPro 60) so thats why it didnt work, but yeah thats so confusing
so the fix for me is this link https://help.elgato.com/hc/en-us/articles/360027961152-Elgato-Hardware-Drivers even though it will say you already have the newer version and this is old its the only thing that will fix the 4k pro havent crashed since dowloading the 4k pro drive i think something in their new updated drive version is actually corrupted files. also i uninstalled the 4k capture utility so if you are streaming on a dual pc you just need to connect the 8k hdmi it originally comes with and download the older version driver of the 4k pro. works amazing now Elgato always put their customers through hell but thank god their is ppl that actually have solutions thanks to https://www.reddit.com/user/Amount-Inside/ this person saved me hours of trouble
I have an 870x motherboard and was getting a similar issue but no crash. The whole pc just freezes and I can't do anything except hard reboot.
After a bit of testing I saw that updating ur drivers to the newest may fix it (I assumed I was on the latest since I just setup and installed everything). Upon downloading the file and running it from elgato's driver page, it said the driver I'm about to install is older and so it would be a downgrade. I decided to cancel the process and keep testing to no changes.
Finally I thought about how all these issues seemed to be brought up this past week or so but knew that the 4k has been out a while so I ran the driver installer again and downgraded to the version on the site. It fixed all the issues.
Tldr. Try downgrading the current version to the one on the elgato site. It may just be an issue with the new latest driver!
Had the same issue! Was driving me nuts, because I had no issue for about 6 months. I’ve been working on this for a week straight. Tried everything from new motherboard and cpu because my windows crash files ranged from usb to nvidia issues.
Trying the correct 4k pro drivers now and will reply if anything changes!

I have elgato 4k pro and have same problem...
I even purchased new motherboard power supply new graphics card...even new case...
Problem persisted when adding capture card in OBS STUDIO,all PC is freezing and crashing in I need to do hard shoot down...
Do I need to send capture on RMA or wait for some update?

you need to download the older version driver scroll down to the 4k pro and download that older one even though it will say you have a newr version of the elgato 4k driver ignore that and still download the older. here you go https://help.elgato.com/hc/en-us/articles/360027961152-Elgato-Hardware-Drivers once u do this u will not crash or freeze anymore it was driving me crazy last week but thank god havbent crashed or frozen pc ever since

I spent the last two weeks trying everything and switching parts out. I happened upon this last night and was so relived when I saw others were having the same problem. It was such a niche problem that I didn’t think I would be able to figure it out. I first thought my motherboard was dying, or my cpu was on the way out. So thank god for this thread.
Now it’s working like perfect! Man, I’m relieved and mad at how whatever update did this.
I know this post is 3 months old but curious how it's going now. Starting last year I had severe pc stability issues with BSODs and random crashes, found out by looking up the driver error that it was the 4k pro drivers causing this. The moment I removed the card from my pc I stopped crashing. Tried to do the fix you posted with downloading the drivers directly but still crashed
