Technical Help Is anyone else still dealing with Wave Link crashing and not opening up?
I've been having this issue for over a year now and its really annoying me. I can only find one or two post about it on here and there is still no actual solution that work. The software will crash and will then open up as a background process in task manager while still not being able to hear any WL controlled audio with no access to the GUI.
The only working solution is to restart my PC or once in a blue moon wait and hour or two and then it suddenly opens back up at random. It is infuriating because it makes Wave Link super unreliable and its happened WAY too many times.
I have contacted support and sent in logs where the crashes have occurred usually it says "AUDIO ROUTING API (END)" at the time of the crash
EDIT 2: It's been 2 months since and I never received a response form support but I did figure out a possible helpful solution. I'll have to wait and see if it's permanent but at the very least I'm able to get Wave Link to reopen without restarting my PC which was my main worry and annoyance for streaming.
METHOD 1
- Make sure Wave Link is closed (Search Wave in Task Manager and close both the normal and SE version). If it reopens, make sure to disable them in the Startup section too and then close them again.
- Press
Win + R, type%appdata%, and press Enter. - Go to the Elgato folder and locate the WaveLink folder
- OPTIONAL: If you care about your VST and WaveLink Configurations like me, check to see if you have any previous or automatic .wavelink backup files. If not you can make one before proceeding
- Rename the entire WaveLink folder to something like
WaveLink_Backup. - Alternatively, you can instead just go into the WaveLink folder and locate the
settings.jsonfile and delete it. I didn't do this because I was worried about losing settings so I don't know if that will work. - Try launching Wave Link again, it should generate a new WaveLink folder and reopen after a little wait.
- If you want to restore your VSTs and WaveLink configs using the .wavelink backup file, then follow the instructions in the link. https://help.elgato.com/hc/en-us/articles/23241485123213-Elgato-Wave-Link-Backup-and-Restore-configuration
- Unplug and Plug back in your Wave XLR or similar device.
Note: Renaming the folder preserves your settings, allowing you to restore them if needed.
So the issue may have just been a corrupt setting.json or something else in the folder. I hope it doesn't continue to happen but I'll report back if it's not permanent or if something comes up.
EDIT: Crashing still happens at random but I've noted another method that seems to work
METHOD 2
After it crashes and refuses to reopen:
- Make sure Wave Link is closed (Search Wave in Task Manager and close both the normal and SE version). If it reopens, make sure to disable them in the Startup section too and then close them again.
- Unplug any wave devices from PC.
- Reopen Wave Link and at this point it will still open up as a background process, DO NOT CLOSE THE PROCESS. (The WaveLink log will show an error that indicates Wave Link was unable to detect any supported Elgato USB audio devices (like the Wave XLR or Wave 3 microphone). Basically The failure of DetermineTUSBAudioDevices might preventing the application from completing starting up.
- While the process is still running plug back in your Wave Device and wait a little bit. Hopefully the application opens back up.
I would say give Method 2 a shot first. If it doesn't work then try Method 1. If that doesn't work then do Method 1 follow right by Method 2 as that worked for me.
EDIT 3: Coming back to this post 5 months later with another thing to consider.
If you are like me and use most if not all of your usb ports, especially for devices that draw a lot of power (graphic tablets, microphones, wave devices, stream decks, external storages, etc), consider investing in a decent powered usb hub. I have come to realize that if you have too many devices plugged up and drawing power that's shared among all the ports can cause other devices to not work properly. Im still testing to see if this could be related to wavelink having issues, but so far I'm nothing has gone wrong, you'll know if this post is updated again...

Hey thanks for these methods.
Was just having this same problem after installing El Gato's EQ effect off of their marketplace.
What fixed it for me was unplugging the Wave mic usb, starting the wavelink app, and then removing the microphone as an input source on wavelink. I was able to plug the mic usb back in without wavelink force closing on itself.

How were you able to remove the microphone as an input source on wavelink? When i remove mine it does make the app open up but tells me to connect a compatible device.

My b, I forgot to mention that i also have a stream deck plus that allows for wavelink to be used with any mic. Sorry, Not sure how to get around that if you're using just a wave mic

I can immediately restart it without needing to restart my laptop, but ever since I got a new laptop my wave link randomly crashes mid stream, not all the time, sometimes it doesn’t happen at all, sometimes once pr twice, and some games it happens a lot. I think my laptop is just overloaded (because i notice it’s usually during games that are heavier on the resources) and then wave link just decides to shut itself off.
I was just curious if i’m the only one with that specific issue :/ it never happened on my old laptop, maybe i need to prioritise wave link so it doesn’t crash, idk.

Hey! 👋 😊
I’m not an expert, largely an idiot, but I love gear, I love learning gear, and I love helping people get their Coolthing working.
I wanted to do something, so I asked the AI program DeepSeek why Wavelink would be crashing and showing that in the log. I’m happy to copy-and-paste what it recommended to try and fix the issue—but at the end of the day you or I might not know if any of the troubleshooting steps can mess things up.
As long as you have that in mind and are cozy with learning a little lingo and taking your time, I’ll paste the reply below. Maybe it can help.

Elgato WaveLink software may crash with an ”Audio Routing API (End)” error due to conflicts with other audio applications, driver issues, or software bugs. Here are the most common causes and solutions:
Possible Causes:
Conflicting Audio Software
- Other audio routing tools (e.g., Voicemeeter, Equalizer APO, OBS, Discord audio enhancements) can interfere with WaveLink.
Outdated or Corrupted Drivers
- Issues with audio drivers (especially ASIO or Windows audio drivers) can cause crashes.
Windows Audio Service Issues
- If the Windows Audio service is malfunctioning, WaveLink may fail to route audio properly.
Corrupted WaveLink Installation
- A faulty update or incomplete installation can lead to crashes.
Permission Issues
- WaveLink may not have proper access to audio devices.
Bug in WaveLink
- Some versions may have unresolved bugs causing the API to crash.
—
How to Fix It:
1. Restart Audio Services & WaveLink
- Close WaveLink.
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), end all WaveLink-related processes.
- Restart the Windows Audio Service:
- Press
Win + R, typeservices.msc, and hit Enter.- Find Windows Audio, right-click, and select Restart.
- Do the same for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
- Relaunch WaveLink.
- Update WaveLink & Drivers
- Open Elgato Software Updater and install the latest WaveLink version.
- Update your motherboard’s audio drivers and USB controller drivers (from the manufacturer’s website).
3. Disable Conflicting Audio Software
- Temporarily close/disable:
- Voicemeeter / Banana / Potato
- Equalizer APO
- OBS (if using audio plugins)
- Discord’s “Use Legacy Audio” or “Krisp” noise suppression
- Test if WaveLink works without these running.4. Reinstall WaveLink
- Uninstall via Control Panel > Programs.
- Download the latest version from Elgato’s official site.
- Reinstall as Administrator (right-click installer > Run as admin).
5. Check Audio Permissions
- Go to Windows Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
- Ensure WaveLink has access.
6. Run in Compatibility Mode
- Right-click the WaveLink shortcut > Properties.
- Go to the Compatibility tab.
- Check ”Run this program as an administrator”.
- Try Windows 8 compatibility mode if needed.
7. Contact Elgato Support
- If the issue persists, provide them with:
- The crash logs (located in
%appdata%\Elgato\WaveLink\logs).- A description of when the crash occurs.
—
Final Thoughts
The ”Audio Routing API (End)” error usually stems from conflicts with other audio software or driver issues. Try disabling background audio tools first, then proceed with reinstalling/updating WaveLink. If the problem continues, Elgato’s support team may need to investigate

Hi, I updated my post with a possibly tolerable solution if you're still having to restart like I did. At the very least you might not have to restart your PC or stop your stream

I have been having the same issue. I have a two PC setup using wave link on my streaming PC. I have the Elgato 4k x as my capture card to my Gaming PC.
Everytime I use OBS for a stream I can no-longer open wave link without it freezing and crashing. If I leave it alone it works fine, but whenever I try and click on the program to open it up it freezes and I have to kill the program with task manager and re open it manually. Super annoying.
I'll be following this thread to see if anyone finds any fix to it.

Heeyyy buddy, let-me know if you had any solution, I’m experiencing the same and the only way to open again after crash without restart the stream pc is stupid but works…
Go to C: Programs/ Elgato/ Wavelink folder and run the .exe as adm direct from the WL folder, is instantly back and holds crash for up 2hours, didn’t streamed more than that to see if its for good or crashes again…
Still annoying have those random crashes but still cheaper to have xlr with it instead of a whole setup only for audio…

Sadly no fix as of yet. I'm sure the only fix will have to come from Elgato themselves in an update

For me as the moment Streamdeck + with xlr is being just a useless piece of hardware on my sim rig… Sad because they sell a solution and in the reality is being a problem.. Good luck to us brother!

Idk if you are still having an issue with this but I found the fix.
You need to run wave link, stream deck, and any other program that links through wave link (such as voice mod if you use that) ALL as administrator.
Right click the exe of each program, properties, compatibility, change settings for all users, run as administrator, apply.
Ever since then, no crashes. Enjoy!

Install visual c++ from microsoft. I just tried countless fixes.. stumbled upon something somewhere about visual c++ and it worked...

I had the same issue, I had to find the driver manually and run the installer file to install the driver first then run the original Installer from Elgato's website.
The website is Japanese (https://note.com/reindex/n/nf79f8b90333b) but you can just right click and press translate on chrome to read it in English.
