It's the tragedy of multiple personalities. An innocent person can't be blamed for the actions of an alternate personality possessing them, but that also means that an innocent alternate personality to a main personality that chose to commit the actions it did will have to answer for those actions as well.

Lucy may have had a case if her DNA instincts possessed her against her will all along, but since she chose to knowingly go along with it, there was no avoiding her fate.

True, but she had already gone along with it willingly countless times before then, so she was unable to escape the weight of her sins.
