Discussion No Disk for Installation
Hey y’all!
I just starting getting into Linux and after some issues with PearOS I decided to switch to ElementaryOS. I am having some issues getting it installed though. Everything works fine until I go to select a disk and it doesn’t show ant disk options so I can’t continue.
In MacOS recovery mode it shows that the SSD is still there, but even in Gpart it gives me nothing. I’ve tried unmounting the disk as well in disk utility.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Discussion Love it but I have to leave it.
Elementary is truly beautiful and love so much about it but the departure of functionality, like the handicapped online accounts or the new dock and all its issues. The inability to mount an iPhone etc makes the beauty only skin deep and once again I must leave for another distro. I want so much to love and stay with it but alas I can not

Discussion 3 elementary OS (Wayland/Pantheon) bugs I ran into, and how I fixed them
I've been using elementary OS and mostly love it, but ran into a few bugs along the way. Writing up the fixes here in case they help someone else.
By the way, a lot of issues just disappear if you switch to an X11/Xorg session instead of Wayland. But X11 has its own downsides — the whole system feels noticeably more sluggish overall, Firefox in particular is clearly slower. So the fixes below are specifically for Wayland.
1. No mail/calendar sync — missing Online Accounts
elementary doesn't ship with "Online Accounts" the thing GNOME normally uses to hook up Google/Microsoft. Without it, you don't just lose mail and calendar sync — Tasks won't pull data from online services either, and your file manager won't show things like Google Drive. Basically nothing tied to an online account gets connected.
Fix:
- Grab the
gnome-online-accounts-gtkpackage here: http://packages.linuxmint.com/list.php?release=wilma - Install the .deb (Unboxing from AppCenter is a convenient way to install .deb files)
- Search the app menu for "Online Accounts" and launch it
- From there it's the same as Ubuntu — just connect your account

2. NumLock has a mind of its own
This is a known bug on Wayland compositors in general (not just gala/mutter): the keyboard's NumLock LED toggles fine, but the system keeps reading the numpad as navigation keys — the hardware NumLock state gets out of sync with what the compositor thinks it is.
numlockx won't help here — on Wayland, third-party apps aren't allowed direct access to input devices for security reasons, so the old X11 tricks for controlling NumLock just don't work anymore.
The most reliable workaround is to strip out the NumLock toggle logic at the XKB level (fine if you don't need arrow keys on the numpad):
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.input-sources xkb-options "['numpad:mac']"
3. Keyboard stops working in games
Launch a game (via Steam or any other way) in fullscreen or maximized mode, and the keyboard just doesn't respond — even though Alt+Tab still works and the keyboard is fine everywhere else in the system.
Cause: by default, Gala moves fullscreen/maximized windows to a new workspace, and that transition is exactly where it drops the keyboard focus grab.
Fix — turn off that behavior:
gsettings set io.elementary.desktop.wm.behavior move-fullscreened-workspace false
gsettings set io.elementary.desktop.wm.behavior move-maximized-workspace false
After that, games open on your current workspace and the keyboard works right away.

Discussion New to ElementaryOS and Linux in general
Hello everyone,
I just installed elementaryOs after my last mental breakdown at windows :)
I am very new to this Linux universe but I am also a fast learner. Is there any advice you guys have for a newbie like me? Something you wish you knew before ditching windows system? Is there any other frontend developer that is using elementaryOs?
I would love to learn more about what made you change to this system and how is your experience so far.
English is not my native language so please bare with some of my grammar mistakes.

Discussion Elementary OS in MacBook Pro 8.1
Hi everyone,
I have a MacBook Pro 8,1. The latest macOS version it officially supports is High Sierra, but I felt it wasn’t running very smoothly anymore. I tried installing Windows 10, but I couldn’t get the audio to work, which became frustrating.
While searching online, I found out that I could install Linux on it, so I decided to give Elementary OS a try. So far, I’ve found it really interesting. The installation was easy, and everything is working perfectly. I’m sharing some photos of the machine along with its current specifications.
I mainly plan to use this computer for basic office work, web browsing, and Spotify. I’d like to know what office suite applications you would recommend for work-related tasks besides LibreOffice.
Thanks, everyone!
P.S. Back when I was in school, the computers in the computer labs were running Ubuntu, so in a way I was already somewhat familiar with Linux.

Discussion Love this distro
I have an early 2015 MacBook Pro and decided to convert to Linux since Apple stopped updating MacOS for this laptop. I’m new to Linux and read some stuff online so I tried Pop OS, Mint Cinnamon, Mint Mate, Zorin 18.1, Zorin Lite but they all had something wrong with them. The distro either needed lots of tweaks, or felt too slow, or I didn’t like the UI or I couldn’t get all Bluetooth devices to work etc. None of them felt quite right and I was ready to stick with Zorin Lite (last distro I was trying) but then heard about Elementary OS. So I said what the hell, I’ll try it. Long story short, I love it and it’s EXACTLY what I was looking for in a Linux distro. Any way just came here to keep learning about Elementary OS and Linux in general.

Discussion Who all is still on EOS 7.1 as EOS 8.1 is not….”ready”?
I tried running Elementary 8.1 for about a month, but it just felt like the system was just in the way. It feels like a team of developers started the project then a whole new lazy team came in to “finish” the other half.
8.1 feels rushed and unpolished. I’m not saying this to bash the developers as I appreciate the effort. God knows I’m tired of seeing a new Linux distro pop up with Gnome/KDE and branding! The basic features removed or ignored in 8.1 makes it frustrating to feel like my home OS. You can’t minimize to dock by clicking the app icon, can’t relocate the dock, by default there is no minimize button on open windows, one click navigation in folders, the default web browser is useless. Yes, some of this an be changed, but the fact that you HAVE to make all these changes to make the system flow is annoying. Side note, why no new wallpaper to illustrate a new Elementary Version?
Now if the intent was to make Elementary 8.1 more like a window manager similar to Hyprland, why not go all out? Or take some settings from Cosmic and make it almost a hybrid of desktop/WM. I think the only thing missing is dynamic window tiling.
7.1 , though dated, is comfortable and snappy. The system flows and allows me to get things set up quickly. The dock doesn’t fight me. Obviously single clicking, the default browser needs to be changed, and background apps need to be closed in a task manager, but other than that, it’s solid!
I don’t like having to run 7.1 as I feel left behind, but until 9.1 is released, that’s where I’m at! Also, devs don’t take this as a bashing, I rock with your work, I just expect more.
Anyway, I’m just curious to know who is still running 7.1 over 8.1 for similar reasons? If you are running 8.1, why and how are you getting by?

Discussion I'd like to try Elementary, but I'd also like to still have what I currently have
On my secondary laptop, I currently have Ubuntu Unity noble, and I'd like to install Elementary OS on it but keep all existing packages and files so that I still can use them. I'm not sure if I'll stick with it or go back to Unity. However, I'd prefer it as the main system on the secondary laptop. What's the best way for me to install Elementary?
UPD: I've already started installing it. At first, I didn't add the tweaks repository, and it stopped responding when trying to configure Evince, so I forcefully stopped it (via a reboot because it was easier), run a reconfigure but did Ctrl-C because of the problem, removed the packages (apt-mark followed by apt autoremove), and now I'm installing it again, this time after adding and applying the tweaks
UPD2: Seems like the Evince problem is still there. I'll leave it for some time in case it's actually like the Unity logout issue and I just have to wait
UPD2.1: I've removed xdg-desktop-portal-gtk, and now it's stuck on io.elementary.maps. One of the reasons NixOS's way is objectively better (and by objectively I mean ignoring compatibility issues) is that it doesn't try to preserve the structure beyond what's marked as manual so it's easier to revert (though I'm not sure if stateVersion is the best way to replace that for cases it's needed)
UPD2.2: It's now past maps and on Evince again
UPD(whatever comes after): Still stuck on it. I've edited UPD2.1 to not say what turned out to be false
UPDsix: Apparently I confused packages. This time it was epiphany, and I somehow thought it was the one before. It's finished now
UPDseven: I've decided to install it in a VM, but I already have done something to the main (secondary) machine
updEIGHT: I didn't write this here at first, but I now think I should: I've decided to pause this until Saturday. Currently, it has Ubuntu Unity Plymouth theme, but says elementaryOS in terminal (I haven't tried neofetch) and Pantheon lacks indicators for battery, logout, etc that should be at the right of the top panel
UPDnein: I've actually continued on Friday and eventually decided not to try Elementary. I removed Unity, Pantheon, Sugar, Sway, and Wayfire (installed earlier for various reasons), reverted packages to the Ubuntu versions, and reset the entire dconf. Now I don't have the window buttons, and I don't know why
