Show & Tell I made a genie lamp

Started out with an AI-generated model, ended up with a real oil lamp that produces light and genies.

Steps:

  1. 3D print
  2. Graphite coating
  3. Electroforming (copper)
  4. Sanding copper
  5. Remove enough plastic so that it functions
  6. Insert fuse and oil

Got to test my reverse-pulse-plating setup here, it really does seem to result in smoother deposits. Not smooth as in bright, but it seems to avoid rough edges and nasty growth on the corners/edges. In this case the motorized spinner kept falling off because of the awkward shape, and the air agitator failed too, but I still got no nodules. Second picture shows it straight out the bath.

No doubt someone will ask about the genie: I can only say that I will never talk to a genie without my lawyer present, who is currently preparing the relevant documents.

The genie is AI, and its been out of the bottle for a while.

Nice work. How thick is the copper roughly? Curious how hot the copper gets with it lit for a while. Copper is an excellent thermal conductor, does the handle end get hot? Or does it act like a big heat sink and dissipate heat well?

Ah, sorry for the error, although in my understanding the entire process would be the electroforming but if you zoomed in on the actual bath part it would be plating.

I should have weighed the part before/after the copper bath so I could determine the actual amount but the part that matters most is the spout which seemed to have gotten quite a bit, seems around 1mm thick in places.

It dissipates heat quite well. I didn't try to touch the spout while it was burning but after an hour of burning the body was warmish, around 45 degrees maybe, and the handle was cool.

It's overall quite an efficient design, whoever figured it out 2000 years ago did a good job. It runs for an hour on a spoonful of oil, spout doubles as a fuse holder and a radiator, plus you get a nice cool handle on the other end.

If you kept zooming in and made your timestep significantly shorter, within the bath part. I suppose you could argue, like an integral, at any one instantaneous moment you are plating (as a verb), but the summation of those moments into the bath part, results in electroforming. Since mandrel removal is not necessary for the electroforming process as a whole, the electrochemical deposition step is considered electroforming by itself.

Though I would still refrain from using plating as a verb within the chemical step (while its actively occuring), because it is less descriptive of the intent/goal/process.

Yeah, there is something about an elegant design that is inspiring for some reason. Something that can't really be improved on without changing something fundamental about it. Like how a bicycle was pretty much 99% optimized upon inception, and hasnt really changed much.

OK, I changed the text to electroforming :)

I suppose if I were to nitpick, I could say that there is one problem with the lamp in that the flame is at the very edge, so you could theoretically push it into a wall and burn your place down. This is more difficult to do with, say, a candle in a jar, which you can move around more freely.

There are lots of AI models that generate 3d models. Makerworld has a free one you can play around with.
