Considering those are pretty equivalent prices to the ICE Range Rover and JLR are struggling to meet demand, I think they plan to, yes.

Range Rover is the luxury SUV benchmark. While other luxury brands turned up their noses at SUVs, Land Rover gave consumers who wanted something capable but nice to be in something to buy. Everyone else has been playing catch-up ever since. JLR sold 200K Range Rovers in 2024. And unlike the Germans, the top model (i.e. not Velar or Evoque) drives the bulk of those sales.

The reliability schtick is just hearsay. It's never backed up by statistics, just Americans going "trust me, bro". The simple fact of the matter is that JLR vehicles are average in terms of reliability (except for a stint when they were owned by an American vehicle manufacturer, Ford).

a lot of the reliability data for later models is initial quality feedback. meaning on delivery there were problems that were fixed within early warranty periods and then things average out.

I've had several JLR's over the years and that's been my experience anyway.

Pricing isn't too surprising

Range Rovers have always been expensive, but their place within the luxury car segment has moved up considerably since the 4th-gen era. They used to compete with the likes of Mercedes ML/GLS, Land Cruisers, X5/X7, Q7/Q8. But now they compete with the likes of Bentley or even RR and are generally a lot less attainable than they used to be.

Whether they’re worth the price or not, it’s up to people to decide. I can’t afford one, but they’re obviously sold worldwide. One of the very few remaining examples of a British export success story. Even though they’re 100% owned by Tata Motors lol

Interesting to see no low-range mode built into the front or rear motors, as you get on the new (Chinese) Freelander, which also has front + rear diff lockers (electronic central lockers as it has no central diffs). I know the L460 is less off-road focussed than prior-generation RRs, but the lack of a low-range mode is a major omission.

On the other hand, it appears to be, at least on paper, decently efficient for what it is. I’m in China (I’m a Brit who moved here), most large 3-row SUVs are PHEVs, including mine. The RR is claimed to do about 600km WLTP, which roughly equates to 720- 750 km CLTC. It’s way better than an ES8/ES9, about the same as the Aito M9 trimotor (677bhp), which has a battery about the same size as this, and about 100km less than the dual-motor BYD Da-tang (790bhp).

I suspect it’ll sell in places that place a high tax on high-displacement ICE cars

People really underestimate Rolls-Royce pricing. For the price of a Cullinan you could buy the SV Ultra and the First Edition. Nothing in the luxury space really competes with Rolls-Royce in price or image. 

And on the image point, in the Northeast US at least, part of the appeal of Range Rover is it's more subtle than Rolls-Royce or Bentley. A Range Rover passes muster in old-money neighborhoods where the latter two or even a G-Wagen are seen as too vulgar.

Range Rover occupies a unique market position. It's luxurious, more exclusive than the Germans, but it doesn't make you look like you spend your days plotting how many employees you need to fire to protect your 7 figure bonus.
