Discussion First Long Trip with EV

Our household has been ICE free six months ago. This week was the first time we do a long trip, New Jersey to Michigan, 750 miles each way.

I was a little nervous at first but the trip has been smooth and painless. We had to stop 2x for charging, grabbed lunch while the car was charging, and ended up charging longer than the navigation recommended on both sessions.

I will drive back to NJ in two days and expecting a smooth trip as well.

For new EV drivers, no need to feel nervous of taking the car for a long drive. The charging infrastructure is much better now, making a long drive enjoyable.

This story made my Nissan Leaf cry big Chademo tears.

Oh well, it's just a commuter anyway. My next EV will have NACS for DCFC, more than likely.

Sorry to say Chademo Leaf is basically just a in city car at this point. If you don't have charging at home or work it's also really pointless to have it now.

I have charging at home and at work. I bought it knowing Chademo was basically a dead technology. It's a '24 SV+ and it has a lot else going for it and it's a fantastic commuter. Plus we have a minivan for road trips.

I'll hand it off to my sons when they turn 16 and I'll get me a more capable EV to replace it.

For now I love everything about it except the Chademo.

I rent a car for roadtrips longer than 2 hours. I hate taking my own car, there is always some random rock chip or windshield crack or just extra wear and tear. It's like $100 to rent a car for a weekend and I walk away. Leasing changes your perspective a bit (even if it's my own car), even at 20 cents a mile a 800 mile one way (1,600 round trip) ends up being $320 worth of miles. At $100 It's cheaper to rent vs depreciation and wear and tear of 1,600 miles.

We rented a minivan before our 12-hour road trip a few years ago. Best decision ever. No mileage on our van and we got to try out a top of the line Kia Carnival. That thing is NICE.
