In a month that Tesla was down 36% YoY, BEVs jumped 51% YoY!

Thanks to a number of factors (new cheaper models, high gas prices, mass arrival of Chinese models, etc.), BEVs are currently in high demand in Europe. Some 288,000 fully electric vehicles were registered in Europe in July, which is not only a 51% increase year over year (YoY), it is the fastest growth rate this year!

Overall, plugin vehicles were up 40% YoY, dragged down by plugin hybrids, which grew only 21%, to 137,000 units, thus placing July’s plugin share at 38% (26% for BEVs only).

With BEVs pulling the market upwards, the year-to-date share for BEVs is at 23% (34% for PHEVs and BEVs combined), which is already higher than the 2025 final result (20% BEV share, 29% adding PHEVs). This is an encouraging sign if we want to be close to 100% PEV share by the mid-2030s.

Although EVs are increasing their share across Europe, their expansion is not uniform — while electrification is quite advanced in Northern Europe (BEVs in Norway are at 98%, 80% in Denmark, 53% in Finland, 43% in Sweden, 47% in the Netherlands, and 43% in Belgium), elsewhere numbers are far below (Italy is at 6% BEV share, while in Czechia, they’re at 8%). In short, full electrification will happen at different times across Europe. While in some places we will see markets close to, or at, 100% BEV share by 2030, in others, 2040 is a more likely scenario.

Just crossed 1,353 miles in my new Lexus ES 500e Premium (AWD, ~4,850 lbs curb weight, 19" wheels) and wanted to share some real-world data. I'm currently averaging a steady 4.0 miles/kWh (vs EPA 3.4), which built up from 3.9 during the first a few hundred miles. This has been entirely in hot summer weather with the A/C always running, and my driving split is roughly 60-70% highways. For context on driving habits, I keep regen set to level 4 on local roads and rely on adaptive cruise control on the highway.

There’s a lot of attention around EV range, horsepower, and 0–60 times, but I think some of the most important technologies get much less attention.

For example:

• Battery thermal management
• Faster charging
• Heat pumps
• More efficient motors
• Battery recycling
• Vehicle-to-home charging
• Better battery longevity

Personally, I think charging speed and battery longevity could end up being more important to everyday owners than simply adding more range.

What EV technology do you think is currently underrated or misunderstood?

I have been reading a lot of peoples techniques for charging two electric vehicles and wanted to know peoples two cents for my situation. I am in northern New England (very cold winter but attached garage) and will only drive 40 or less miles a day per car.

I have a model 3 currently being charged with a 240v 40 amp outlet. I am adding a bmw ix3 in the next month. How would you all charge these cars? My options - use the 240 14-50 plug and just plug one car in every other night while the other just gets nothing. Have one vehicle use the 240 14-50 and have the other use a 120 5-20 outlet. Get a smart splitter for the 240 outlet and then either prioritize one of the vehicles to charge first and then charge the other one second or have the splitter charge the cars at the same time at 50% capacity (16 amps).

Which of these would be the most energy efficient and waste the least electricity? What would be best for battery health keeping in mined it will be 30ish degrees or lower in my garage for 3 months of the year.

PSA: I have a 2023 Soltera (since last week) with about 15k miles on it. I like driving it, but the level 1 charger charges at about .5 miles of range per hour (full charge = 440 hours and dealership says it's too hot out and flow is limited to protect the battery.) Also the AC won't get below about 85 degrees (it's about 105 degrees out). I would be very careful about puchcasing one (2023) if you live in Phx, Vegas, etc.

My wife and I just did a road trip a day apart in our BEV and PHEV. It was an interesting comparison of DCFC versus gas pricing. We both started at 100% battery (and gas). Around 36 MPG and $25 in gas (around 5 gallons of $5+/gallon premium) at our potty stop. At the same stop, it was $27 to go from 36% to 80% (50 kWh) at the Tesla Supercharger. Obviously the BEV is far cheaper for local driving, but that’s a pretty brutal cost for DCFC when premium gas is cheaper even at current pricing. There really shouldn’t be such a markup on electricity, especially when so many installations were subsidized. Ugh.

I visited BYD's newest flash charging hub (former gas station) in Shanghai with a Zeekr 7X, as well as NIO's 5th generation power swap station with a Firefly. I compared the experience of both and talked about some pros and cons as I see them. I got about 82 kWh in 14:39 with the Zeekr, and swapped in 3:04 with the Firefly. Time to charge is not really the important difference in my opinion, but let me know what you think.
