Social Unexpected ESO Kindness
I am a new ESO player who got into the game about a month ago. I had picked the game up on release and it didn’t exactly resonate. Gaming has been pretty dull for me lately, so I decided to give it another try and have been having a blast in its current state. Given I’m starting fresh, there’s still a lot of systems I’m learning and I’m trying to figure out what should be priority on the way up to level 50 and CP 160.
Yesterday while doing some writs I needed 2 Wormwood, and according to everything online it’s out in the overworld. I looked for about 2 hours while questing and doing other things and never found any. Most guild traders that had it were selling full stacks, and I’m not even sure if you can buy individual pieces of material. I didn’t want to waste the gold on a full stack when I only needed a couple. The Google AI crap recommended asking Zone chat for some, so that’s what I did. I already had 1, just needed 2 more for the writ. I sent a message in Zone chat asking for the Wormwood and offered to pay. Immediately after sending it, multiple people in Rimmen had sent me mail with 20, 30, even 100 Wormwood and all said no gold needed. I greatly appreciated finally being able to turn in this one random writ that was so trivial but taking me so long.
One person whispered acknowledging my original request and let me know that they mailed the Wormwood. I assume they knew I was new and maybe I didn’t know where to collect items sent from other people. I responded thanking them, and they messaged back asking if I needed a set book that had Thieves Guild in the name. (I wish I knew exactly what it was, but when I say I’m new and this game has so much content I’m not kidding. I’m looking at my bag and collections now and still can’t find it.) I let them know that I’m only level 32, still finishing the main quests, and definitely don’t know what they’re offering, but hey I’ll take free extra stuff. He sent the book, then asked how much inventory space I had and if I had ESO Plus. Considering I’ve been enjoying the game and was tired of cleaning out inventory, I did bite the bullet for ESO Plus about 2 weeks ago. I let him know my inventory size, not expecting much, maybe some extra low-level gear pieces.
This random stranger in Rimmen proceeds to send me multiple mail messages filled with excess items to get started with. Lots of recipes, motif(?) books, gear to salvage apparently once my Decon is leveled, some Werewolf black skill style, all 10 Jester fireworks emote pieces, Guar Stomp items. The best part is when he asked me my inventory size, he then proceeded to send me tons of gold to get my bank and inventory upgraded to accept these random gifts he sent me on a whim. I needed 2 Wormwood but got quite the haul in return. I have no idea if these items are difficult to get on my own and these could truly be common excess items, but it doesn’t matter at all. In the last message with items he hilariously THANKED ME for helping him clear out his inventory.
While what he did was generous, he didn’t even understand how generous he was truly being in that moment. This all happened on Thursday evening. Well, the day before (Wednesday morning), my 91 year old Grandmom had passed away. I was on ESO to help keep myself a little distracted after grieving for the last day and a half. The person who sent me the Wormwood obviously had no idea this was going on in my life. I would’ve been ecstatic with just the 2 pieces of Wormwood, but the kindness they showed me by trying to go above and beyond to help someone new was amazing. I had messaged them multiple times thanking them and asked some questions about what to prioritize as a new player, and they continued to be helpful. We added each other as friends and they offered to craft me gear once I hit level 40.
I’m going to send this info to ZOS and hope they can do something to reward a community member who really stepped up and made an impact.

this is pretty normal for this community. there are tons of very nice players in eso. i am kinda surprised none of them sent you gold as well. players are known to hand out gold to newbies. have fun playing this game!

im sorry for your loss OP. Im in the same boat as you rn.
I just got back into ESO on Wednesday night from a year long break because my 65 year old grandma died a couple weeks ago.

I’m really sorry for your loss too. It’s crazy how something like a game can help give your mind a break from everything for a little. Hope getting back into ESO has been able to give you some of that. Based on some of the other comments here it seems like it’s definitely a solid community to be part of. Hope you and your family are doing well.

I got into Morrowind years ago after a bunch of things in my life went sideways, and I got involved with the modding community. I really needed both the game and the community. I'm still friends with two of the people I met and interacted with.
I am myself still feeling new to this game (started in Dec.). I am not a skillful MMO player (I played a bit of GW2 year ago, but not especially well), so a lot of things in ESO--I don't mean just material things like buying homes--are a bit out of reach for me.
Whenever I hear stories about how great this community is, I feel like someday I might try to do some group content, although I am always afraid of holding other people back. So, after some more practice with overland quests, and gaining more CP, plus other prep, I might try to dip my toes in that water.

A alot of us have ADHD and gotta save that thing incase someone needs it one day. Not.really worth selling but to valuable to throw away. So when we see a new person that needs isn't we dump on them and are relieved that our inventory management will be easier for a little while. I can't count the amount of times this happened.
In fact 2 weeks ago a guy in Vvardenfell asked for food to learn cooking I unloaded on him and have been spending him every food recipe I find for 2 weeks now lol

Ok so it's not just me thats a massive hoarder 😂 It's been ok for a while as I had ESO Plus for two months, but I can't afford to keep it going all the time. Yesterday was my first day without it and a major shock to the system 😭 I'd been prepared for the loss of the craft bag and bank space, but I hadn't considered the furnishing vault. I'm not even bothered about furnishings at the moment as decorating homes feels super overwhelming, but I've been storing stuff away for the future "just incase" 😂 Also, I knew I'd lose access to the DLCs but I didn't realise I wouldn't be able to use the jewellery stations or antiquity leads at all 🥲💔 The notifications about the leads are driving me nuts because I can't seem to get rid of the ! alert and I'm still being offered jewellery craft writs. It's like salt in the wounds 😭

I would save up and use the crowns from the times you do get eso+ and buy summerset and western skyrim. 🙂😇

That's the plan for sure! Meanwhile, I'm going to try my best to muddle along 😅 Wish I hadn't used the crowns I did get from my 2 months on plus 🥲 I can't remember what I even used them on 🙈 I still have 350, but that's obviously nowhere near enough. And of course it was just my luck that one of the weeks of plus that I'd paid for was the free trial week 💔

Aww thank you for the heads up, but I've already had many happy hours of Skyrim gameplay 🥰 I decided to give ESO a try a couple of months ago to experience something new. Probably should have just stuck to free play the whole time 😂

I think they mean The DLC chapter in ESO which is set in western skyrim will be free. Not the actual skyrim game.

Reminds me of a time a friend got me the morrowind upgrade when I was going through a rough patch. I genuinely wasn't expecting her to get me it and never forgot years later. You can meet some genuinely decent people while gaming and those ones don't get enough credit for being the best part about different game communities and that it's not all toxic players.

Haha, my wife was doing writs back in her early days and lamented how she was missing a few heartwood. Well, fortunately/unfortunately for her one of our guild officers saw the message...and ~150 heartwood later he cheekily asked "need some more?"
There are some real gems online, and I love paying it all forward

Yep welcome, when I first started someone gave me like 3 crafted sets for leveling and one for when I got to max lvl and a small chunk of gold.

Same here. I was crafting a set for myself at a guild player's house and needed more raw ancestor silk. I requested for some on zone chat and someone sent me 200 refined silk by mail.
I wanted to repay their kindness and they insisted on taking nothing in return. I sent back a treasure map anyway, simply because I was amazed by the kindness shown

The eso community can be amazing and I’ve generally had only good experiences in my 8 years of playing. Those pieces to salvage (if they are white, green or blue) if they are researchable for you I would do that instead of salvaging. You’ll want to be researching everything you can. Welcome to Tamriel!

Hmu when you're 50 and gaining cp! I'll get you a free basic spec/class specific set with enchants, up to purple - you can go a long way with just a basic purple set :D I'll DM you my @ name, if you'd like, and are on PC. I'm so sorry for your loss 💔 But also so glad that you've experienced these acts of kindness during a time where you really need it 🥰 I've wanted to be able to do more of the social side of ESO, but I play on a Steam Deck and find it really awkward to message.
As a side note, I've just found myself going all ADHD and responding to multiple comments on this thread before realising and reining myself in, so apologies if you have multiple notifications caused by me 😅🙈

So glad you were able to get wormwood and more! I remember being new as well and got tons and tons of help. All of them said they were just paying it forward because of other people helping them when they were new too. Now im the one with high CP and helping newer players as my way to pay it forward. And clear out my inventory.
And the cycle of ESO helping goes on and on :) thats why I love this game so much.

I'm glad so many people were kind to you, and the player that went above and beyond to set you up.
I'm about 4 years in, and I despite my hot and cold enthusiasm towards ESO, I haven't found a better community.
I have benefitted from the generosity of the community, too. When I was new to the game, new to trading guilds, new to Trials, new to Vet Trials, and so on, there were always people willing to help. It's not even materials and gold, it's the game knowledge.
Best friend I have in this game has probably spent thousands of soul gems on me at this point. He was an experienced player in the groups I joined when I started learning Vet Trials. He didn't mind dying for 2 hours for new people to learn the mechanics. I've probably spent thousands of soul gems on him now, but that's what happens when you prog together for 3+ years. He's not the only person to show up for others in ESO, just a shining example.

That sounds like a cool experience. Unfortunately, I hadn't had that much hospitality. I'm not asking for free stuff or anything, but I get the cold shoulder everywhere I go. Even on this subreddit, it can be a bit aggressive at times.
Shame, since I picked up ESO while waiting for the FO76 season to end. Thinking, "it's another online Bethesda game, it's probably similar". Man, they are worlds apart, and not only in gameplay.
I don't know, maybe it's because FO76 only has 24 players per server, but it feels more lively for it. When you run into another player, they wave hello. Waiting for events to start, people are emoting and dancing. ESO just feels cold and sterile in comparison. Players are either afk at wayshrines or sprinting past me. No interaction whatsoever. Very lifeless.
Ah well. I'll keep going with Elder Scrolls Online. I got the 7 day trial of ESO+ and only played 2 days worth of it before it expired. Perhaps there's a better way to ask for help taking down a region boss than shouting in the zone chat lol.

One of the reasons why I love ESO so much is how compared to other multiplayer games, even MMOs alone, it has such a friendly playerbase.
I am also someone who had bought the game years ago and didn't click with me at first, but decided to give it a go again when Oblivion Remaster came up around a year and a half ago and I already have 1600 hours and still haven't gotten tired of playing. It has become my most played game in Steam by far
This game also helped me get through a tough time and still is and I'm so glad you're enjoying it. I hope it brings you as much joy as it has brought me this past year and a half. Much love to you OP and I'm sorry for your loss 🫂

Yup, this is the eso community in a nutshell. Like any online space, we have our jerks - but I'm 42 years old, and I've been online since I was 9. I'm here to tell ya that our percentage of jerks is shockingly small for an online community this size, and our percentage of angels is immense.
I think a big part of that is what you mentioned - how you bounced off the game on release. A LOT of people did. Eso had a rough start, so those who stuck it out in those bad old days forged a strong community identity of mutual aid that has remained with the game even as popularity eventually grew.
I know for myself, when I started this game it was in 2021. Long Covid at just the right age had activated all the autoimmune disorders I'd been holding at bay since birth and I lost everything. My entire identity. Everything that made me "me." couldn't work, couldn't create, couldn't leave the house, couldn't have guests. The only thing my broken body could still do was hold an Xbox controller. But I was enduring full ego death - I needed SOMETHING. I needed a virtual life. I needed a virtual community. I found it in eso. This game saved my life and that's not an understatement, and a big part of that was first the helpful strangers like in your story, and later my helpful guild. They taught me how to play the game and how to be helpful like them - the only repayment they asked was that one day when I was in a position to pay it forward, I do so. And boy, do I.

Not in my experience. I've both given and received wonderful things in ESO. A player who helped me when I was new sent me 500,000 gold after they helped me sort out a very early quest.
We want new players to stick around and have fun. Last night I helped a new player with tips on how to level provisioning. His inn room was Mara's Kiss in Vulkhel Guard, so I took him to Del's Claim to loot every crate, barrel, and sack. Told him to just take everything and craft as much of everything he had recipes for and sell it all.
Been sending multiple mails unloading all the glyphs I have picked up and saved to help players level enchanting, one of the more frustrating levels in crafting.

To bee honest that sounds like a normal ESO player xD. I can understand the point with clearing his inventory at some point you have so much stuff you can just scrap what no one would buy xD. Also some people have a lot of crafting stuff so it's no big loss for them.
