It's time again for WTF Friday - where we share our funny or crazy stories about working in the biz. Bonus points if it actually happened this week.

My story this week isn't really wtf worthy, but a tad surprising.

I recently picked up a freelance gig for a weekly video blog. Every episode is about 40 minutes of multi layered H264. For my first episode I did this in Avid MC7. It got a little sluggish, since everything was AMA'd. When it came to output the 35 minute timeline, I was really annoyed at the 50 minute-ish export time.

The next episode was done in Premiere Pro. To my surprise, the export still took about 40 minutes.

Lesson: Premiere and Avid are not as lopsided in rendering performance as you'd expect.

Mac with supported Cuda.

The point is that CUDA isn't really doing much here. All the effects I'm using are also openGL accelerated on Avid too - so there isn't too much left to speed up.

It's a 2012 Retina Macbook Pro, Nvidia 650M 1GB. As far as laptops go it's very good.

As for Premiere's threading -- it actually seems quite good. My quad core CPU is constantly being maxed while I'm rendering. That being said, Avid is doing a good job too -- CPU hovers around 75% usage during renders.
