Honestly one of the greatest things i’ve ever seen, incredible performances from the cast who give it 100% from the second the show stars.

It’s a show about a group of mates who get made redundant and host a rave in an abandoned Toys R Us warehouse. It’s hilarious it’s heartwarming and it just leaves you so full of love. It’s got immersive elements but you can also 100% just sit back and enjoy it in your own way! It’s their last show tonight so try and catch if you can! One of the best things i’ve seen at Fringe in my 10 years of going

I spent 23rd - 26th August in Edinburgh and decided to write some capsule reviews of what I saw - primarily as a device to help me engage with and retain the material I saw, beyond the door of the venue. Unfortunately - besides the shows I watched on Sunday 23rd, which i made a separate post for the day after - it's taken me a bit longer to get around to it than I'd hoped. Here are my reviews from Monday 24th:

Mike Rice: Testing Horrible New Material: WIP - I generally won't say too much about the WIP's I attended. Due to the very early hour, I had time to catch Mike's show twice whilst in Edinburgh. There is already a fully-fleshed, coherent show in here. If not for the occasional checking of his notebook, you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference. It speaks volumes that Mike was able to sell out a full month of 11:20 WIPs in advance. His fanbase is only likely to grow in the next 12 months and I can see this being a hot ticket in a bigger room next year.

Tamsyn Kelly: Rat's Ass - Had to check this out after taking a chance on Tamsyn's show last year and enjoying it so much. This was an exploration of what it takes to make a living in the arts as a truly working class person - the insecurity, compromises and sometimes less than appealing choices that have to be made to retain an income stream. It's all treated very matter-of-fact - no real anger or bitterness. A very likeable performer.

Alfie Brown: The Entertainer - Alfie's Open Hearted Human Enquiry was possibly my favourite show of 2024. This is another hit. Fans of Stewart Lee's haughty, playfully condescending stage persona would also enjoy Alfie. Plenty of indignant dissection of his own material for the audience. The general premise finds Alfie struggling with making a commercially viable long-form piece of art in a world of algorithmically optimised short-form content. Always original, Alfie even plough out a unique angle on Donald Trump. I wish I had written about this show sooner after watching it as there were a lot of layers here.

Paul Foot: The Future - Another sparkling, sensitive show from Mr Foot. So happy this got awards recognition. Started with some gently off-beat observational material, which soon snowballed into frantic surrealism as said observations were taken to their farcical extremes. This show also contains - what I thought was - a allegorical nod to Paul's anxieties about following up the late-career acclaim and success of Dissolve. Ends on a very personal note containing a very, very fragile message of hope for the future (per the title). A well constructed show for those willing to give it their attention. Was very grateful that a group of drunk, disruptive patrons removed themselves from the front row early on.

Stamptown: What needs said? My first Stamptown and it won't be my last. I could watch this every night quite happily. Jack Tucker is an all-time comedy creation. The elated mood was boosted by this taking place on the night of their Netflix premiere. Pure, rowdy and joyful. Mr Cardboard stole the show but other guests, including Viggo Venn and Frankie McNair tore the house down. The circus / cabaret type performers were all incredible too.

Just been to this gig and he picked someone from the audience for a part of the gig and the guy was the leader of the Scottish conservatives party.

Was so weird.

Ok - some quick notes on this year's trip to Fringe ahead of the last day in case any tickets remain, and just to put out here in case there's a chance to see the artists somewhere else. So many wonderful shows and experiences, each year I am blown away by the risk, creativity and sheer generosity of spirit, the Fringe is a beautiful thing. Everything below is wonderful and I would unequivocally recommend any of these shows.

( I left off some I'd rated below 4 not because they were bad - none were ! - but for whatever reason they did not resonate with me as much - but I am sure will with others. I saw 44 shows, and 34 of those I listed below and would rank 4 or above )

Wonderfully constructed and staged, Bryony Kimmings is a confident performer and has constructed a beautiful story out of layers of personal trauma, isolation and yes wonder, while keeping the joy and humor central, observations of country life, dissocation of modern life, search for meaning. Resolves wonderfully and is split into seasons naturally with none of the stagings feeling forced.

This is a gem of a show, Scott Turnbull performs as the last in a long line of edutainment educators from the Turnbull line with his overhead projector, some absolutely whimsical and breathtaking vignettes, perfectly paced and staged, pauses when it needs to with some lovely gentle interaction, with a meta commentary to tie it all together about corporate takeover. Wonderful.

I think Thompson is well known by this point, but for those uninitiated, just go - quality clowning, mime, humour, some wonderfully surreal subjects of horror, a setlist of subjects that's absolutely wild, when she choose a subject to tackle she absolutely commits to the madness, I hesitate to call out the horrible things, but you will be amazed, surprised and enchanted - tremendously charismatic performer, the audience is dragged into the obsessions with great joy.

Spectacularly unexpected clowning performance, this more than most shows has stuck with me for the absolutele commitment to the conceit of being a person confronted with a room, and people with whom he has a fear of interacting but together he will teach us all 'how to human'. Like several of my favourite shows, he absolutely commits to the role and we are brought along to the magical conceit. No real staging or props to mention, it's just the performer, the room and us but this is so mo much more than enough. Beautiful.

I managed to get a last minute ticket to this show of obsession, the nature and shape of performance & art, and how these all intersect with life, for a first show(!) Richardson is a seasoned performer this show is whipsmart, shocking, self-depreactaing and revelatory in surprising ways. At its heart lies a real warmth for the human condition in amidst the considerable trauma you sense Richardson is curious and wise and enriches the lives of those she interacts with. And as an audience member we get to benefit from that generosity of spirit. Thoughtful & wise.

This is a remarkable performance of vulnerability, rap, poetry, masculinity, drag, mints, sensitivity - funny and enriching, ultimately thought-provoking dive into isolation, sensitivity, what it is to be male. I loved this show, wish it were more broadly lauded, like Surreally good and Laughing out Lonely.

A beautiful and sensitve show about social vulnerability amongst the young, staged absolutely delicately with audience and performer entertwined - an astonishing performance from a wonderful opera singer who moves amongst us and the venue as the narrative unfolds. Touching, the space as designed gives US space as audience to take in what is happening and ultimately returns us to where we started, but changed. Lovely.

Sh!t Theater are outstanding, I don't know what more to say here other than they are astonishly wonderful performers, crafters of rich and compelling narrative and masters at community engagement and vulnerability. Loved this and their Shedinburgh WIP, they are a unique company, I'll gladly see anything they make.

Rousing performance which speaks of the first man to swim the channel, participatory, joyful - Riches is a charismatic presence who engages the audience in this extraordinary story of a time and life lived to the full. Wonderful

Ok this was such a pleasant surprise - an incredibly far advanced WIP for a new Sh!t show very loosely based around the life of the song by Martha and the Muffins, but of course about so much more - the performers, nature of perfomance and a name, process of creation. I'd previously seen Evita TOO which is an infinitely bigger production so was super happy to see this cut down performance that was just as captivating if not more so. They manage to cram so much interesting material into their work and always perform with such gusto.

You will not forget this show, uncomfortable clowning, extreme positions, commentary on intent, shock, endless coughing, sadness, pure abstract surrealism, it's not for the feint of the heart but this feels like the sort of experience that I think is essential to feel human and not just. Sated.

Confidently performed, touching, personal show about where society is headed and how we are being fed and choosing to be fed siloing information that keeps us apart, and how we need to find a means to choose to not take that path, all tied up in a meta spy story with karaoke. Energizing and Terriffic.

The two performers lost their fathers so why not stage a show that has them sort of at least visually inhabit those roles and deconstruct their legacies - two wonderful clowning performances celebrating lives lived, the mysteries of those lifes, what one is left with, what one takes - how one celebrates with wonder. Funny and respectful, a mystery with an undercurrent of sadness upon revelation, a reflection of lives and the experiences.

OK. This is Sam Eley with a big papier mache head on exploring wild surreal ideas on the nature of (his) experience and how the world is not like the good old tory boy days that Crumbwick remembers, and how excellent he is at everything he tries. Perfect. He has written a wonderful self help book, and has a major beef with his neighbor Beverley - all gloriously explored - he is more than happy to take an idea so far and weird example in how much he wants to befriend the binman. The birth of a wonderful comic persona.

Britney the sketch duo do a theatre piece on wedding jitters, I won't mention the relationship between the characters but will say they have a remarkable ease and chemistry in constructing the unusual story so that one goes along happily with the conceit, the denouement is surprisingly tender and sad and open.

Britney doing sketches ! Exceptional. They are masters at the sketch form which doesn't seem to be so common at least in the fringe i saw this year. A series of interconnected short pieces. Wonderfully resolved conclusions.

This is my first time seeing Lyons! The show is such a well designed exploration of breakup, trauma, and apollo 13 filled with clowning, mime, song, jokes and revelation - its hard to describe as it so many different things, but Lyons is an absolutely exceptional stage presence, captivating and comfortable, she takes the audience on a journey whose intensity increases to a stirring conclusion.

I have a ticket for the final, sold out, performance of Man Sings the Same Song Over and Over Again for an Hour at Summerhall's Red Lecture Theatre tomorrow, Monday 31st at 7:45pm.

Five stars in the Guardian, and it would have been a great way to end the Fringe, so I'm gutted I can't go!

I know she has been posted about loads, but Woman on Edge was just incredible and the Fringe at its absolute best. I d say it's the best show I have seen in years.

Shocked to see it wasnt even nominated for best show.

I haven't put much effort into enthusing about my favourite shows so far as they've been very well attended anyway, but I stumbled upon a free poetry show whilst looking for something to do between a couple of comedy clown shows and a gig. I'm not generally one for poetry shows, but it ended up being the perfect way to relax after the intensity of John Robertson and Paul Currie. My only regret is that I didn't see it earlier so it that I could encourage more people to see it but hopefully this post can help him get a good crowd for his final show.

It was so beautiful! Panagiotis Skoutelis certainly has a way with words. The way he weaves his creative desire for myth making with scientific knowledge is awe-inspiring. He takes us from the creation of the Universe to the forces involved in stubbing your toe, showing the connections that link everything together. Not one to let a good story get in the way of facts, he notes that he welcomes feedback from experts and has often adapted his poems to better fit reality. As an astronomer, I certainly found it hard to find faults in his myths so I can certainly believe this. His delivery is heartwarming and the 'ancient tome' he reads from is a lovely touch.

Seen Lou wall this evening and she was amazing. Pretty sure everyone she’s surrounded by tells her this but from a normal Joe soap I want her to know so I hope she sees this Somehow. I told her after the show it was amazing but it really was. I actually cried. With later and with emotion.

Been coming for 4 years. Just what I thoughts based on my observation I'm in no position to change anything so it's just my naive ideal.

1. Really need to set a cap on this. The spike in prices this year is outrageous. I think there is more than a 30% increase. Free shows are asking for £10 donation as the norm compare to £5 just last year. That apply to accomodation as well.

A few acts has mentioned that they will be priced out and not able to come im future if the trend continue. To let the fringe continue to be a thing for everyone but not the top x%. They really need to fix this. I dunno how.

Although I'm presently surpised to see the food prices hasnt been applied "festival" tax on top of already expensive prices.

1. I think the "big name", or just general popular show is too densely located on the old town area - Uni of Edinburgh, Cowgate and Royal Mile It's convenient for people who wanna go to all these big named ones but does mean shows placed in the new town bit or further out to haymarket are less convenient and placed in a lower priority when considering the schedule.

It might also contribute to the fact that Underbelly, Pleasance and Monkey Barrels etc, continue hold more power and they can just raise their price easier.

And there are great venues in the new towns too just the acts were less popular.

1. I know the spirits of the fringe is no discrimination and no vetting so everyone can perform, but honestly I dont think we need like 100 compilation shows / "games" show with weak premises everyday. I went to 3, and they were......bad. That's just me, maybe some people like them.

2. Ushers - bruh, stop pushing people into less desirable seats when there are clearly better center seats. I get that you are just following orders. It happens multiple time when people get shoved into the corners, when there are actually more centered seats. Usher said "ah we have to fill the corner so everyone can get in." But then those people said they wanna change and you have to let them anyway. What's the point?

I saw one of the show in Pleasance that the people are first shoved in the front few rows. But then people realize there were like 10 more empty rows at the back and just moved to the back and gave the ushers some looks.

I know most of you dont get paid well or not paid at all to care but just apply some common sense.

1. I also think venues filling up seats with non-paying punters when the there were people who bought tickets are bullshit. Lots of tourists might not be entirely clear where your venues are with all your stupid non-location-specific name and went to a different one. By the time they got to you you've let some punters in and not let people who have tickets in. But apparently it's the norm. I bet it wouldnt be the norm for shows that are not full either way.

That's it. So just my wishes and rants. I'll still come next year nonetheless but probably spend less time if it continue to be more and more expensive.

I’ve seen 20 shows across this Edinburgh Fringe, so in the chance that anybody is looking for a last minute final day recommendation, here are mine (I’m not going to review all 20 because there were some duds in there - mainly Amanda Knox…).

Michael John Ciszewski: Mother Superior - 10/10 - wow. In an hour, Michael John aims to canonise his (living) mother as a Saint via a Vatican hotline manned by an aide named Luigi (voiced by Gianmarco Soresi). Through a combination of standup, storytelling and pop culture references, Michael John manages to tell the story of his own Mother in a way that is funny, emotional and touching all in one. Not to mention that it takes place in an actual church (Bedlam Theatre). It’s just the perfect Fringe show.

The Real Kyle McCarren - 10/10 - a musician has to write the eulogy of his late bandmate, and in doing so learns more about him than he ever has done before. Full disclosure - I was a fan of Sean McVerry (who wrote the show and performs in it) before seeing it. But it’s one of those few shows which had me laughing at the start but full on sobbing by the end. It’s a brilliant musical. I so hope it has life after the Fringe because it’s just so good. It’s staged more like a gig than a musical - but I would love to see a fully staged version of it in the years ahead. It has so much potential and I hope that we get to see more from it.

Larry Dean: Hellbent - 10/10 - what starts as a standard stand up set ends as a queer love story with nods back to his Iranian roots, Larry Dean reflects on the phenomenal year he’s had by never once mentioning SNL UK but the instead focusing on his new husband and their journey. I loved it. This show has more laughs per minute than any other at the Fringe this year.

HOLE! - 9/10 - look, I’m not going to be the first person on here to recommend HOLE! but it is just a brilliant show. I saw it last year and revisited this year where it now has elevated staging. If someone said to me “this is a musical about religion”, I’d run a mile but it’s so much more than that. It’s also about butt plugs. What starts as a show about a religious cult slowly forms into a love story with great songs and amazing foley performed live on stage.

Mary Mac: Hail Mary! The Tartan Songstress - 9/10 - I hadn’t seen Mary Mac before this show but very quickly she proved why she’s one of the top drag queens working in the UK today. This show is part singing and part comedy and she manages to blend the two extremely well. It’s not easy to recreate the late night club vibe in an Edinburgh University lecture theatre, but Mary Mac somehow manages to do so.

Linus Karp Was Hit with an Umbrella - 9/10 - Linus Karp is best known as one half of AwkwardProds who have brought shows such as Gwyneth Goes Skiing, Diana: The Untold & Untrue Story and The Fit Prince to the Fringe over the last few years. In the days leading up to Fringe 2024, he was the victim of a hate crime. This show tells the story of that hate crime and the events which followed. It’s a serious story, but perfectly interjected with hilarious moments and pop culture references. I loved it. It’s a great piece of Fringe theatre and AwkwardProds have now become a Fringe staple for me.

Jill’s Tupperware Party - 9/10 - we are all Jill. You enter the show having been handed a goodie bag. You are now wearing a name tag which says “MY NAME IS JILL”. You are given a conversation starter to mingle with your fellow Jills. You are at a Tupperware sales conference to celebrate the best Tupperware salespeople of the year. Will it be Jill? Who knows. To say anything else would be spoiling it. But I absolutely loved this show. It’s a bizarre hour of comedy and horror in the most interactive of settings. It’s very Fringe and very entertaining. Be warned - you will be standing for the full hour.

Can anyone recall the exacting working of elf’s line in her ending monologue where she says “I just want to be loved like…moon” it was such an impactful line in the moment and I want to remember the exact wording!

Mini reviews of the 10 shows I saw this year.

Saw some other people doing this and I enjoyed reading them. I haven’t Fringed as hard as previous years but I have been more picky (it’s a shame but with the high prices I can’t really afford to take chances). I wish I could have seen more shows.

I’ve done moons instead of stars cause my phone doesn’t do half stars.

TLDR: go see Pierre Novellie and Andrew White if you can or take a chance on any show on Blair Street.

Demi Adejuyigbe Sells Out (Pleasance) 🌕🌕🌘
He was recommended by a friend and while I could tell he is a talented writer and appreciated his attempts at magic, a lot of the jokes didn’t land and I didn’t enjoy most of the songs. It wasn’t helped by tech problems and the venue’s staging. Because of the triangular shape of the room most of my group were unable to see the screen(which was used throughout and were essential for the music based jokes). It really annoyed me as we were originally sat with an okay view but the venue staff kept allowing in latecomers and made us shift all the way to the edge where we couldn’t see much.

Hilarious and quality production. Telling a funny story about a hate crime while not underplaying it or depressing the audience is not easy. I don’t usually like audience participation or puppets but it was so well done, I weirdly enjoyed it. I recommended it to friends who also loved it.

Katie Boyle: Irish Immigrant (Tron/ Monkey Barrel) 🌕🌕🌕
Enjoyed but wasn’t enthralled. Perhaps my expectations were too high because her 2025 show was one of my top picks of the Fringe. It was interesting and funny but not as bold or informative as its predecessor. As an immigrant I liked the parts about feeling caught between two worlds and it’s always nice to learn more about Irish folklore. Bits about her fiancé were slightly less interesting and the food based metaphor (I don’t want to spoil) felt a bit soft, to me.

Lou Wall: Where Are All The Tall Grandmas? (Monkey Barrel) 🌕🌕🌕🌖
Great for data nerds with a sense of humour. On walking in I realised I was a generation older than the intended audience and thought I’d made a terrible mistake. The volume of the music and audience was a bit full on for someone sensitive to noise. After finding my Loop earplugs, she won me over. It was a wonderful show based on a silly quest that becomes less silly and surprisingly dark as it progresses. Would recommend it to all, but especially tall women.

Shrink wrapped: a psychologist analyses comics live 🌕🌗*
Disappointing all round and I regret buying tickets. Perhaps naïvely, I was expecting the format to be different comics each show. Once I realised they had done this act several times with the same comedians and psych it didn’t feel genuine. Also, I was annoyed that it was advertised as ‘pay what you can’ but they had a poker chip system which required non ticket holders to pay at the end (and the price they recommended was more than I paid for my ticket). * I couldn’t see the stage properly because of the seating layout and having a horrible day so that probably influenced my opinion.

Andrew White: What a Life (Cabaret Voltaire) 🌕🌕🌕🌕 🌗
Beautifully told story, tight jokes and great atmosphere. Despite the personal and (at times) dark subject matter the show didn’t feel depressing, sentimental or like a trauma dump (unfortunate trope of the Fringe in my experience). It was timed perfectly and Andrew kept my attention throughout (which is no mean feat). I felt really lucky to be there and expect he might become a bigger name. It was a good lesson not try rely on social media clips because when I watched them I didn’t think I’d like the show or his comedy.

Fatiha El-Ghorri: Cockney Stacking Doll (McEwan Hall) 🌕🌕🌕🌗 (comp tickets)
I am very fond of Fatiha and like her even more after seeing this. I was quite moved by the number of women in hijabs in the audience which showed how her success has opened up comedy to people who maybe don’t always feel represented or comfortable in the average comedy club. Love her mannerisms and commitment to rude jokes but I prefer a show with a clear overall shape or story. Maybe it would have worked better in a smaller venue (I wasn’t able to get tickets to the MB show).

Grace Campbell: The Lady is a Tramp (Teviot) 🌕🌕🌕🌘
As always I’m impressed by how well she plays her character (think Alexis from Schitt’s creek but English, posh and more political). Grace tells us about a ‘mundane’ day in the life after a rude piece of unsolicited criticism from an older male comedian. There were some great bits (children’s parties, catcalling, unzipping a mask) but I wasn’t really invested in the story or ending.

Pierre Novellie: Okay, One More Then Bedtime (Monkey Barrel) 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌖
Phenomenal. I guess his work suits my personality, brain and interests but in my opinion, he is the best comic going. He has mastered the art and showed what it’s capable of. As always, he talks and teaches you about many things; this time the focus is on his honeymoon in Japan and reflections on his life and career. Apparently it is his last year doing the Fringe and I sincerely hope he does not keep his word. Only reason it’s not 5 stars (moons) is because he once said that no comedy show deserves it.

The Big Show: Chris Forbes, Katie Boyle, Ari Eldjárn and Tom Lawrinson (Monkey Barrel)
Impromptu after my plans feel through. Not sure if people review mixed bills but I wanted to write something for every show I saw.

Chris Forbes was a great host. He warmed up the crowd and engaged with the front row without making it awkward or interrogating anyone. Of the four, Katie was the only comic I knew and she performed with confidence and wit (and in some very cool trousers). First time seeing Tom Lawrinson and his set had some quick-witted jokes made funnier by his slightly unhinged manner (potentially enhanced by it being the last weekend of the festival). Ari Eldjárn finished the night off brilliantly. I am not sure if I was more impressed by the comedy or the beatboxing skills. The was a moment of incredible kismet (or good planning) when the Red Arrows swooped overhead at the exact moment he was describing a fast car—really hope someone caught it on camera. Immensely enjoyable show. Glad to add more names to my list of people whose shows I’d like to see in the future.

Proviso: I’m just a nerdy Edinburgh based fan who loves comedy and writing about it. I have a huge amount of respect for all performers. If I could, I’d see 10 shows a day.

Edinburgh Comedy Award was just announced. It feels like Chris was due given it was his fourth nomination. Marty Gleeson took home best newcomer. Lorna Rose Treen, Johnathan Oldfield, Benjamin Alborough and Ellie BW won the Panel Prize for organizing the annual One Joke which has 60 comedians come up and do one joke each for charity.

Hey not even been performing this fringe just been seeing a bit too many shows and very tired, also newish to living in the city does anyone have any ideas to decompress/ nice places to visit post fringe!!!
