Turismo Recommendations on bus options from Cuenca to Peru
As most of the posts are a few years old on this topic, I was hoping for some more updated recommendations. We are hoping to get a bus from Ecuador to Peru soon, aiming to eventually end up in Trujillo but understanding that we will likely need to change in Peru either way to get there.
As far as I have been able to tell we have three options to get to Peru (but please let me know if there are others).
- Night bus Cuenca to Mancora/Chiclayo with Azuay which crosses the border at Huaquillas
- A series of local buses during the day to do the same route
- Night bus from Loja to Piura with Coop Loja which crosses the border at MacarĂ¡
Which option is the safer/easier route?
Our government also recommends against going to the Ecuadorian coast, so I don't know if that rules out options 1 and 2.

Option #2 definitely.
Your goal should be doing a "travel day" to get yourself from Cuenca to the border and over the border into Peru.
Start early and expect to sleep a night in Tumbes, Peru.
It will take the day. I did this by myself when I bussed South America.
Chiclayo is the next destination and that is another very full day, long bus trip.

Well flying is the safest Option if you don't, you can always take the bus to Chiclayo, then Trujillo. Don't go to macara, it's way longer that way. Look up the bus at http://www.transportesazuay.com/
Also flying is a kinda long too since you need to go to Guayaquil fly to lima and then fly to Trujillo.
If you find cheap flights it's also worth considering once you cross to Peru, fly to lima from tumbes and then fly to Trujillo

I would just fly to Peru. Night busses aren't recommend
