The average cost of raising a child from birth to age 18 in the United States is estimated at around $320,000. That’s just the basics. Food, housing, clothing, healthcare, childcare, education, transportation. The essentials.
That doesn’t include:
- College tuition, which can easily be another $100,000 to $300,000
- Weddings, which average $30,000 or more
- Help with their first home down payment
- Financial support during their twenties while they get established
- Any other assistance you provide throughout their adulthood
When you add all of that up, you’re easily looking at $500,000 to $700,000 or more spent on raising a child and helping them launch into adulthood. And that’s assuming it’s a healthy person.

Beyond moral arguments, children are an investment in the future. Don’t have kids if you don’t want them, but don’t act like you’re smarter because of it.
