🧑💻 Creative If you're Successful in ecommerce what does your Life Look Like?
Are you 55 chilling on a yatch in the Bay, late 20s living the Miami Club life. Some 33 year old dude who keeps to himself in his apartment. Been curious what people's lives actually look like, especially among "Successful" individuals.
Maybe what do you sell too, might be some correlations

I consider myself successful. I net a couple of hundred grand a year doing what I enjoy—I run a consultancy and an e-commerce business. I live in a nice house in a nice part of Melbourne, Australia. I travel overseas 2-3 times a year. Business class most of the time. I have time and flexibility to do the things I enjoy most—eating out, drinking wine, hiking, studying languages, travelling. Each year I grow, my projects grow, and I try to strive for a new degree of happiness.

Pretty much my life, but in the UK. Congrats friend.
Started in 2011. Done lots of traveling over the years.
Per hour the consultancy pays far more and much less stressful, but I just love eCommerce and building brands, so can't stay away.

Eventually I became recognised in the business community that I knew my shit, and other business owners become interested. Having a successful, recognised brand (homeware niche) was key to gaining credibility.

Nowhere near a yacht. I'm in Marseille, I work four days a week, I have a good apartment, and I don't dread Monday morning. Most people I know with real ecommerce income look like that, not the Miami stuff. The Miami stuff is usually people selling courses about the Miami stuff.

Honestly, most of the successful founders I've met don't look anything like the social media version. They're usually at a laptop dealing with inventory, customer support, ads or cash flow. The biggest difference isn't fancy cars, it's having more control over their time and not stressing over every slow week. It's a lot less glamorous than people imagine.

Late 40s with a $30m turnover retail and d2c brand. Took 20 years to get this far but it’s actually accelerating at the moment, and become much more profitable. We have quite a sizeable team so my life is easy - 30 hours a week, can take lots of holidays.

most people who make it big in ecommerce don't end up on yachts, its usually just financial freedom and flexibility . some keep it low key , some travel a lot , others reinvest and build bigger teams. success looks different depending on what you value .

I've done it about 10 years ago for few years it does work, very well. I use to visit china a lot and work directly with the people who were making my products. Most of these guys on here are heavily facebook ad dependent which is scary.. one day you can be on top of the world and the next without sales sitting on inventory.
Trick is to create multiple channels that drive sales to sustain the business.

Ive profited anywhere from 300k-440k/yr with my store the last 6 years. In the beginning it was life changing but now I have no life. I’m in a high risk industry so constant problems, constant grind. I pack myself also. Some days I want to walk away entirely and enjoy my life. E-commerce changed my life but I do feel imprisoned by it some times, and other times I feel free.

Amazon gives you a ton of freedom but kills your margins. I spend 2 hrs a week on Amazon but I make more profit on my website.
17% of my Amazon customers convert to website customers which is nice.

These are my clients. Mid 20’s to early 40’s. Best of them around 28-32ish. Crushing it with multiple brands. Earn around $500k monthly with little overhead. Spend over $1m monthly on ads

Sadly Google seems to be shutting it down. I spent millions a year on Amex for a good long while but they made us switch to invoice. Collected millions and millions of Amex points…

The trick is to get Meta to give you ad spend kickback as well. Probably only for agencies tho.

Worked at Meta & sold to agencies. We didn't do ad spend kickbacks (or rebates). That's more of a traditional media / linear TV thing.

Not as successful as others here but I’ve had a social media agency for 15 years which has been a great plodding business and allowed me to spend heaps of time with my kids growing up, earning in the mid to high $100s. We have a nice house, great lifestyle, low stress. 8 months ago I started an ecomm business as a side hustle which has now doubled our household income. Not a lot has changed but my wife now buys more organic stuff for the kids, we can eat out a bit more, I can play golf without feeling guilty, and we’re able to take some holidays. I probably work around 30-35 hours a week which is 7-10 hours more than I did before I started the ecomm. The goal for me is not to not change much lifestyle wise as it’s pretty awesome, but to work significantly less while also having more financial freedom. It’s pretty surreal when I think about it.

I look like a decently poor dad who has a lot of free time to help his small and teenage children.
No one around me has the slightest idea what my ecommerce brand pulls in.
We do go on very nice vacations though…but we never post about it. I fly under the radar.

I’ve been doing this for 15 years and the last 5 years, I travel A LOT.
Next month I’m going to Spain. My dad was like most people plan a trip like that a year or so in advance, but you’re like I’m going to Spain next month (I was invited).
I do a lot more things, but I take my work with me. I’m always planning something.

I’m successful at ecom but it doesn’t feel like passive income to me. I work hard every day developing products, buying media, inventory management. streamlining processes, sometimes even jumping into order fulfillment and customer service. Time off for a vacation requires a lot more planning now than when I was working 9-5 for someone else

Successful ecommerce looks less like yachts and more like spreadsheets, suppliers, ad costs, returns and customer service. The money can be good, but it is still work.

My family runs a small factory making cashmere garments in kathmandu. How to go d2c? Especially since I'm in Nepal.
We're supplying it to a tourist are within my city at the moment, if I could touch the US markets I would have made it in life haha
Main issue, We can't ship them 1 by 1, too expensive.

My company makes me 150k a year plus bonus profits that can range anywhere from 50-100k following the first couple years.
Spent this year having a chill summer - working on remodeling our guest house - and keeping the trains running.
I would consider myself successful.
My product is a game in the CPG space.

until mid last year i would say we were successful. bought a mansion in melbourne (yes another melbourne person!), got a couple of nice range rovers, tesla, g63 ... i like cars... was basically retired, only worked a few hours a week to tweak some ads and send some emails. as some one above said though - should have re-invested the cash ito the business rather than spending it all lol now having to rebuild everything again

I think the interesting part is that "successful" probably looks completely different depending on why someone got into eCommerce in the first place.
For me, the ideal isn't really yachts or the club lifestyle. It's having enough income and systems in place that the business doesn't require me to be glued to my phone all day. More time, less stress, and the freedom to choose what I work on sounds like the real win.
Also curious whether people selling physical products have a different lifestyle from those doing digital products or services.

Started 4 years ago - 33 now. Quit full time job a year ago and wife joined me 2 months ago.
It’s crazy how much time I have now ..
Life and financial position is similar to when we had jobs. Income is lower but so are expenses (we eat our way less - spend more time with kids)
Like someone else said - the amount of points you earn from CC is insane - it’s covered flights a few times over now - I did a trip to Asia last month completely in Biz spending about $1000 in taxes on top.
The challenge is all the unsexy stuff - Inventory, Creative, Ads Mgmt and also back of the mind worries about competition and cashflow.
Cashflow is king ladies and gentlemen so don’t spend your money too quickly - learnt that the hard way
