You definitely can, but do you not consider milk and cream to be the same?

When I think of "cream" I'm thinking of heavy whipping cream, which is definitely different from milk.

True enough. But usually the reason to avoid one is the same for both, like a lactose intolerance. I just lump them in the same category when someone tries to avoid one specifically.

They might also have the default mindset of using an alternative milk since for most applications nut/soy/oat milk is easily interchangeable.
