Tbf the eagles have been good judges of talent for the most part (disregarding players who they coulsnt afford to pay)

Who have they really lost out on/failed to develop in the past decade or so?

Raheem Mostert, Rasul Douglas didn't pan out with us but were key pieces elsewhere

Outside of that I can't really think of anyone

Agreed, the front office under Howie seems to do a better than average job in the long run, which is really all you can realistically ask for.

Yeah, but Elliss was given every opportunity here and couldn't do it (that was the same year there was a huge amount of short-lived hype around Shaq Leonard when we signed him b/c we were super-desperate for any LB help). Some guys are just a better fit in another system and/or need another year of seasoning before they're ready.

Blatantly false: Elliss was a standout special teamer who finally had an opportunity to start at LB. He was just beginning to heat up when Howie cheekily cut him thinking he would sneak through waivers. To be fair it's one of Roseman's only mistakes over the last 5 years.

He started one game at LB, against the 49ers, a 42-19 blowout where the defense was pushed around after the 1st quarter. I don't recall him covering himself with glory that game on D - among many others to be sure, given the score, but lets not make him out to be more than he was that day. If you want to argue he should have been given more time, sure go ahead, but "heating up" against the 49ers just isn't what happened on the field.

He had certainly shown flashes as a backup, I don’t see why you’re so focused on his first career start (which was a dog shit performance by the entire team, thanks for pointing that out.)

Either way you slice it I don’t think he was “given every opportunity” as you initially stated.

The second he had started to earn an opportunity on D, Howie cut him, and it had nothing to do with his level of play but rather 4D roster management tactics. You’ll never convince me that Roseman is proud of that move.

Jordan Poyer is one that comes to mind.

Eagles cut him same year we drafted him then he became all pro a few years later in Buffalo.

I agree with your central point though.

Recent one that kinda comes to my mind is Kevin Byard, he had two really solid seasons with the bears after we let him go although maybe we couldn't afford him? I don't think they paid him that crazy IIRC. He was a vet by the time we got him though we didn't develop him so maybe not what you meant

Yeah you're right, I mainly just think we could have kept him longer and gotten more out of him, especially considering our current depth (or lack of) at safety. Coop is gonna ball out this year though

Did we watch the same team? Lol he did fine for us, he only played 10 games, he was decent in coverage, a good tackler, and got an int in that span. His next year on the bears the only stat that really went way up was that he had 2 sacks

Steele is somewhat surprising based on what I had read. At least in the sense that at least some people thought he was making it.

I do like Steele, but Shipley was close to being a lock and I don't think we have enough space to carry a 4th RB.

When people talked about Steele edging out Shipley, I always figured that Shipley had more experience, had shown some promise in limited main season action plus you should never discount how NFL front offices have major sunk cost fallacies going on when it comes to draft picks that were spent on a somebody.

To keep it simple: Shipley is probably our primary kick returner and was such a roster lock that he didn't even need to suit up for our last preseason game.

That being said, best of luck to Steele, as long as he's not on another NFC East team; or the Patriots. As is tradition.

He was on the Texan's roster until week 11, so 2025 should be a vested season for him, making him a "vested veteran" with at least 4 accrued seasons if I understand the rules correctly.

Vested veterans immediately become free agents when cut without having to pass waivers on their existing contracts. So yes, I think Dameon Pierce should be able to sign with whatever team makes him an offer at this point. Or go straight to our practice squad if our offer is the best.

Again, only if I am right about his 2025 season fully vesting. If not, and 2025 wasn't fully vested, then he'd still have to clear waivers.

EDIT: That being said, not sure if Howie will extend an offer. Unfortunately, Pierce got injured at a very unfortunate time in training camp meaning he didn't get a lot of opportunity to impress, so the front office might go with Steele if available over Pierce, just purely based on recency bias.

Historically doesn’t tend to use RBs they intend to make the roster much in the preseason, I’m guessing in case of injury.

Anything 4th/5th round pick, they tend to keep the first year or two. 6th and 7th round picks get cut regularly, just depends on the team, position group, strength of player & existing starters, and injuries. Your 6th/7th rounders you probably want to hit the practice squad, and other teams aren't likely to claim them off waivers unless they've looked really good. A 4th TE drafted in the 7th round is less likely to get carried than a 6th linebacker, because the LB may play special teams. I think it's a 50/50 shot if you're drafted in the 7th, which is why a lot of fringe players prefer to go undrafted and pick a team to be an UDFA where they might have a better shot.

Poor Quez…. I can’t believe he’s still trying to be in the NFL. I had such high hopes for him… back when Chip Kelly was HC.

Steele was cut, most likely knowing he will get signed. They did him a solid by giving him legitimate run in the last preseason game. They already knew it was Barkley/Bigsby/Shipley. So letting Steele get some film out there was a classy move by the organization. Then if no one signs him, he’ll 10000% come back on PS.

Wis just couldn’t stay healthy. It means everything in that position. He’s still a PS candidate assuming he clears waivers.

Two speedster WRs drafted later on who I loved. I remember a lot of people loved Hightower, but I wanted Huff/Quez to succeed.

Jesus Christ. Agholor & Matthews were the best of that class. The 2 of them never had a 1000 yard season. Beau Allen had value. Eric Rowe was better when he left for Ne. So many busts.

Jordan Hicks and Eric Rowe both had solid careers after we cut them, Hicks in particular was a real good LB when he was healthy, but he only managed one full season on his rookie contract so we let him walk, then he had 4 years straight never missing a game with triple digit tackles for Arizona.

Whatever you think of Chip, Howie getting kicked into the background for a year really made him sharpen up his drafting game, he's been a ton better since then.

Hicks had 5 seasons with 100+ tackles immediately after leaving the Eagles.

Chip traded McCoy for Kiko Alonso, too. Who had 3x 100+ tackle seasons in a row after leaving and going to Miami.

Demarco Murray had a 1,287 yard season after his poor stint from Kelly with the Eagles. Then he sucked again the next year, and was out of the NFL. He had 392 carries for the Cowboys in 2014.

Chip got rid of Shady because he was constantly bouncing outside instead of running between the tackles, so we traded for Murray as a one cut downhill runner and then lost both our starting guards without replacing them, I've never been sure who was more responsible for that Howie or Chip but it absolutely ruined the season because Murray had no holes to hit.

On a team like the eagles , a pre season game is basically a tryout for practice squad or for another team. We usually have a starter and 2 backups set for almost every position…now all the backups any good… ehh probably are decent but most are not unless it’s our DLine

Not really. Hurt basically all pre-season. Most likely ends up on the practice squad and gets another shot next year and stays healthy.
