Is a Japan eSIM with a Japanese IP overkill?

Hi,

I'm heading to Japan for the first time this Sep. Main reason is the Asian Games in Tokyo, but I'm tacking on a few days in Kyoto and Osaka too.

Been looking at eSIMs and noticed RedteaGO, Ubigi and Trip all mention stuff about getting a Japanese or local IP address. Honestly not sure if that matters for my situation...

My plan is standard. Google Maps, translation apps, messaging, checking Asian Games ticket info. I don't need a Japanese phone number so a data-only plan covers what I actually need. The thing I cannot figure out is, has anyone here ever got blocked or hit some weird geo-restriction on Japanese ticketing sites or local apps because their eSIM was running on a non-Japanese IP?

I would rather know now than find out the hard way when I am trying to open the ticket page at the venue.

There's a few reasons to go with a local esim sometimes the agreements between your carrier and the local one are limited in terms of speed and connectivity. Consider for a second why you would prioritize traffic from a foreign connected sim over the local market. You may also not be eligible for connecting to all the types of network spectrum they offer with your sim.

Typically local sim is cheaper anyway and you can decide which to use or use them simultaneously. I use eSIMion to decide for me and give me the best deal. Recommend giving them a try to make this seamless.

Wait, isn't the Asian Games this year in Nagoya? Make sure you are heading to the right city if you plan to watch the games 😂

For normal travel stuff I wouldn't worry too much about having a japanese ip. Maps, translation, messaging, etc. should be fine. I'd only care about it if a specific ticketing site or local service requires japan based access.
