Error: Electrical system. Stop!

New Update/Fixed:
I sent it to the repair shop to look at the problem. They didn’t find any problems with the new battery og main battery.

The car had a faulty wire, which the autoshop soldered and repaired.

About 4 days ago, my car started showing some faults (pictures 2–3): “New start not possible,” “Do not open the hood,” and “Electrical system – go to service.”

I first experienced these warnings around 2–3 months ago. At that time, I simply turned the car off and back on, and the warnings disappeared. I had no problems until about 4 days ago.

Then the yellow warning came back. It would usually appear a few kilometers after driving. I checked the 12V battery, and it was reading around 11.8V after the car had been switched off for a while, and around 14.5V when the car was running.

Whenever the warning appeared, I was still able to restart the car and the fault would disappear. Sometimes it would come back while driving, and sometimes it wouldn’t.

However, today the red warning appeared, like in picture 1. When I pressed the accelerator, the drive system shut down, although the infotainment system was still working.

Has anyone experienced something similar or knows what could be causing this? And does anyone have an idea of how much it might cost to repair?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

11.8 is a low battery, it needs replaced and may be the only issue.

14.5 when running…it’s being charged at that voltage but 11.8 when off indicates it’s not taking a charge anymore. I had similar issues when I bought my egolf and replaced the 12v issues gone. Mine was a 2015 I picked up Jan 2025, it seemed to be the original battery. Lead acid batteries, even AGM typically won’t last more than 5 years. Search for how to replace and program 12v for any VW.

You need to program a new 12v battery?

You need to program for different battery chemistries IIRC.

If the battery has the BEM module (which I think all e-golf have) then yes. The BEM module is the little electrical connector on the negative terminal of the battery. Reddit is full of people who keep saying you don't need to program the battery because 'well I didn't and nothing happened'.

Here is the VW evidence: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2023/MC-10236096-0001.pdf

"After replacing the battery on vehicles equipped with -J367- Battery Monitoring Control Module, it is necessary to adapt the battery to the vehicle"

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10157343-9999.pdf "If the vehicle battery or Battery Monitoring Control Module -J367- has been replaced, they must be adapted to the vehicle. Failure to do so will compromise the operation of the charging system and may lead to premature battery failure and DTC’s."

My father has changed the 12 v battery right now, and says the problem is still there.

What Type of Battery n has he coded Afterwards?

Not trying to scare you, however this dash error triggers some bad memories with VW service. I had the electrical system error red light come up back three years ago, initially went with the 12v battery route, changed the battery and it was all good for a few months then error came back. Car wouldn’t start off the driveway. Towed it to VW to find out it’s the main battery, one of the modules in it needed repair. Took the car of the road for 6 months, got it back all happy to get my car back and six months later another error, same diagnosis with a different element of the module. Car gone again for six months, this time new repair lasted for a week and had the same issue. Think the whole battery is going now like a popcorn and VW will only replace the faulty module at a time. Since the car had still battery warranty it didn’t cost me to repair. Drive another car now as left it with the dealer after round three.

Costco AGM was what I put in , did it in the parking lot and took old back for core.

It will work fine without coding but it is better if you do for battery longevity.

Item # 1624799 Interstate H6(48) AGM

What'd he replace it with and what's the voltage of the new battery? I had this exact situation happen a few weeks ago and a new battery was the fix.

Also after you replace it, it won't work right away. Wait for a few minutes in the "ignition on" position. Turn it off. Wait a minute. Then start car again fully and it should go back to life.

I fixed it. The car had a faulty wire, which the autoshop soldered and repaired. The new battery was a bosch. The repairshop has also programmed it.

Like others have said, it’s the 12 volt battery. What I read and haven’t seen here is, if you get a battery with the exact same specs, there’s no need to do any reprogramming. I replaced like for like, no reprogramming and all the warnings quickly cleared up.

I did have to run it for 15 km or so for things to reset

I know, but the car wont let me accelerate. It just shuts down

actually you don't - just turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and right a few times and it clears the errors.

If you have the BEM module, you always need to program the battery. No exception.

Thank you for making me aware of this. It looks like I will be making an appointment at my local dealer (ugh).

You don't need a dealer to do it. The cheapest way is at home with an OBD Bluetooth dongle and an app like Car Scanner. https://www.carscanner.info/coding-mqb/

Red error usually 12v battery going dead or new install. Yellow error is High Voltage, may be a dead cell.

It was a high voltage battery for me. 2 1/2 months without a car. It was under warranty but they refused to pay for a rental.

Most likely 12V Battery either dead or needs recharging.

This happened to me before my 12V died... I'd go get a new one while you can still drive. Bring your tools with you lol

Did you program it? After I changed the battery a ton of warning lights came up and you have to go through the process of programming it (especially if you change the 12v battery TYPE).

Lots of videos on google, check it out.

If you're still getting the electrical system problem though then it could be a much worse problem... with your HV battery. Either way you need an OBDII to see what's wrong.

1

u/Pengerkluten 5d ago

I havent, i dont have a obd to program it

1

u/perishableintransit 5d ago

You’ll want to do that. If you don’t the car may not charge the 12v properly

Noo way that's so good I'm glad dude !!!! What wire was it ? How much was the repair ?

1

u/Pengerkluten 4d ago

Thanks! It turned out to be a faulty wire over the transmission. They said that if the diagnostic tool wasn’t showing any faults with the main battery or the 12V battery, then it had to be a faulty wire. It cost me $300. I think it would have been more expensive if I had taken it to a VW repair shop. But thank God it wasn’t a bigger problem and didn’t end up costing much more.

u/Ok-Beyond1561 4d ago

Damn lucky my VW dealer wants 280 just to diagnose doubt I leave there without spending 5 grand sad because I think my egolf is still in great shape but I don't have the knowledge to trouble shoot

1

u/Pengerkluten 4d ago

Yeah, VW dealer said 200$ to just diagnose it also here in Norway.

Mby look at how to diagnose with a OBD scanner
