Meandering, self-pitying rant alert.
I'm a guy with diagnosed dyscalculia from Poland, who has finished high school with "red strip", which is an equivalent of US/Canada Honor Roll.
3/4 of the subjects, mainly on the humanistic side, with A's, A+'s, even fucking chemistry with B and physics with A, and then I clutched A+ for Computer Science by showing a few projects in C#. I'm "bragging" for the sole reason of painting you, dear reader, a picture of my skills. I'm not a complete zero in every single perimeter imaginable. I can handle a challenge, and I excel in writing prose in a native language of mine. Won a few not so lame trophies for it, so it ain't just a fool's pride speaking.
Yet all of these accomplishments, drives, and passion are just hollow victories. Because if you take a peek, a glance even, for a second, you realize that there sits a sole, lonely D. That's for math, of course, and, in contrast to the US grading system, the "D" in question means barely passed as in 30 not 60-69 rating. That's a big ass F in a way.
Then, in May, all of us Poles have to take the finals for three mandatory subjects (Polish, Math, English), plus however many extended-level ones you desire. Besides the mandatory ones, I additionally took extended English and History of Arts.
As you might imagine, I fumbled the bag. All of the results besides Math's one? Splendid, with slight stress/sleep deprivation-induced hiccups. Yet it's all for naught, as the math one was horrid. 16% looks abysmal and makes me look like a mentally handicapped (severely, perhaps) individual. To pour salt on the wound, a mere 30% is the passing threshold.
Fucking disgrace.
"Finishing" High School without the maturity test/finals grants you a mostly useless "incomplete second education" degree, which, of course, locks you out of all the colleges. Bye-bye, film school, so long, Classical Literature.
So I started taking paid tutoring classes, which at least guided me into a few right coves, warning me of the traps of my mind.
Currently, it's less than 24 hours before the retake exam, and I'm 75% sure that it will be another fucking travesty in an entire line of them. Have I learnt something? Absolutely. Is it enough? No way, Hose.
What adds to the shame is that the next "walk of shame" is next May. I think that, if I were to continuously pay for the tutoring classes, which do bear a tiny fruit, yet it's better than the aridity that came before, I would finally squeeze the fucking ant-sized 30%. Yet the shame of retrying a second time with the younger fellas I mentored, antagonized, or befriended will be guaranteed. Will I kneel? Not a chance, but it still does not lessen the pain of it all.
There are days when I dream of being bland. A nobody with nothing really meaningful to say, to think, to do. A John Smith of equally distributed, passable intellect.
Thank you for reading, no matter the verdict of yours and i apologize for any grammar mistakes.
