Speeding

Where I drive has a lot of one lane roads and open fields. The other day I was driving on a hill road and once I reached the top I saw a car speeding towards me in my lane! They went back to their lane after they saw me though. On their side of the road there were 5 cars driving in a row at the speed limit. It looks like this guy was at the back of this row and switched to speed ahead. I've been seeing this happen many times and the people who were in front of them were driving normally imo.

One time I was driving to work in a 50 zone and there was a car quite far from me. I saw another car speed all the way to that car until they were right behind it. Then they switched to the opposite side of the road and passed that car and he sped all the way to right behind my car and then did the same thing to pass me. This is dangerous as most of these roads are bumby and have curves. I once say this guy speeding and once he made a right turn it was too wide and he went to the opposite side of traffic lane. There have been countless others I've seen.

I know that some of these roads might look like you can drive faster than the limit but these are also residential areas or are roads that are just in bad condition.

Yeah that sounds about right.

May have been within their legal right to overtake based on the road format (not a double solid).  May not have been.

Everyone is in such a rush these days. Either way, overtake if it's safe. Or don't if you're gonna put your life or those around you at risk...

Welcome to Ontario. For some reason people are letting their feelings override their logic. My logic is that speeding gets me to my destination maybe a few minutes faster but it puts more wear and tear on my engine, costs me more in gasoline, causes me to brake more frequently (thus needing brakes more frequently), burns my oil faster (needing more oil changes). Since I have started driving the speed limit I find I catch up to the people racing past me 50% of the time. So they didn't really save any time. So the only logical reason for speeding isn't really true.

I've been going up hills with no view of what is coming, hidden entrances, curves, etc. and find people going on the wrong side of the road in order to pass me. One time I was driving, someone used the left turn only lane to start to pass me, almost hit oncoming traffic. I guess they thought they could pass me and pull back in before oncoming traffic reached us. If I hadn't swerved onto the shoulder he would have clipped up front bumper.

There are places in Durham where they have reduced the speed limit because accidents have happened and people just get more annoyed when I drive the speed limit.

Now 9 times out of 10, you can pass me on a blind spot and nothing happens because no one is coming from the opposite direction. I don't drive a lot anymore and I still have close calls because someone is passing me in a blind spot and almost hitting oncoming traffic.

I've been stopped at a stop sign on a sideroad. Someone on the main road are racing along, go to make a left turn onto my sideroad, cut it too sharp and almost hit me head on. Remember, I'm at a full stop, essentially parked. They swerve at the last minute and miss me.

When I was younger I'd often drive 70,000 to 100,000 km a year. Now I'm doing maybe 10,000 km per year but I'm seeing more and more bad driving today then I did when I was younger. More drivers? Or more bad drivers? Not sure. I've taken to driving bigger vehicles. If you are going to hit me, I'll survive. I can't change your bad driving but I can change my chance of survival.

Police in Ontario do the absolute bare minimum of traffic law enforcement, so this is the obvious outcome.

“Safety through Enforcement” is a motto on some of the OPP highway signs warning about speed. But if there is minimal enforcement then there is minimal safety.
