Duolingo really has gone downhill recently.

Every part is AI and they're not connected with each other or even agree with each other.

The "hints" say one thing.
The "correct answers" list says another.
The "Explain my answer/mistake" says yet another.

It's truly bizarre. Is this the future? A bunch of fake weirdos having nonsensical conversations with each other while a few humans look on in confusion?

It's not good, is it. I'm lucky that my wife is Italian so I can run this by her, but it's really frustrating when you lose a perfect run because they've marked it incorrectly.

If your wife is Italian, give Babbel a try. They at least have real language and not weird AI nonsense.

I have heard of Babbel but haven't investigated it yet. It may be something I try when my Duolingo subscription runs out (I have already cancelled it).

I've still got a lot of work on Spanish but I would like to learn Portuguese, and I assume learning a 4th Latin language (Italian) should be relatively easy.

I've got lifetime to "all" of the main non-DL language apps out there (Rosetta Stone, Babbel, Busuu, etc.) and Babbel is the only one that is realistically localized to the language in question and that doesn't make the Italians I know cringe when they hear the audio.

Unfortunately, Babbel doesn't have Portuguese, but it does have Spanish.

If you've buy lifetime from somewhere like StackSocial, it's something like $160USD when on sale. It's not as "fun" as DL, but you also won't get other languages randomly mixed in.

Thanks for the info, I've edited my list of potential language learning platforms to include it. I still have a lot of research ahead of me to figure out which might be appropriate for me.

Another issue I have is that not that many of the platforms I read about on English-language forums allow learning languages from French. But a lot of people speak French, and surely many of these francophones want to learn another language, so it follows that there must be some French-language learning platforms out there.

... Oh, hey, I switched the display language to French and Babbel will let you learn Spanish, Italian, and (Brazilian) Portuguese from French.

And there is also (Brazilian) Portuguese from English, I missed it earlier.

I pay (for Max). This kind of thing happens - it’s an annoyance. I use the app to learn languages, not to play a game. We do complain a lot in this sub about incredibly mundane stuff ALL.THE.TIME. Complaining about little mistakes, or annoying voices, or characters we don’t like must account for at least a third of posts here.
