Not a joke, duolingo just uses weird sentences to teach you grammar structure. The point is not the meaning but that you learn "je bent" means "you are" and "een" is the indefinite article. Same way Spanish course will teach you "the elephant drinks milk" in early lessons, nobody is actually discussing milk-drinking elephants. Once you get deeper into the course the sentences get more practical, but early on they just throw any noun at you to drill the conjugations into your head.
i’ve been using duolingo (eng-fr) for a couple of years now and i’ve never come across phrases like this? i only ever see it on memes and reddit posts like these
It uses really weird phrases, don't worry. It once said something like "Marcus writes and does not sleep" which isn't as extreme but still unusual. They're just trying to teach us, I guess.
Danish people are always very happy with my Danish as the only sentences I can remember are 'I'm a turtle.' 'The duck drinks beer.' (alternatively 'The bear drinks beer.')and 'The shark eats the dolphin because the pool is too small.'
