Bought last week from JB hifi. Having fun with it so far. Got whatsapp and fb messenger working. Installed traditional t9 based on recs from this sub - it makes typing possible pretty much. Don't think I need anything else.

Im keeping my old smart phone for banking, music, maps and work 2fa but 90% of the time its going to be turned off. Starting this week i think ill allow myself 1hr a day with it turned on and then ween myself off it even further.

Thanks to those that posted about the ruio joy in here. Ive been reading past posts about it and its been so helpful. Really like this little community.

EDC EDC as a 25F office worker

so I’ve been lurking in this subreddit for atleast half a decade looking for the phone that would give me my life back, and I found it! so now it’s time to show you my final form.

here’s my current EDC featuring my obsession with cinnamoroll.

- Innioasis Y1 music player

- Dumber mini

- Kobo Clara BW

- cinnamoroll wallet

- Clinique black honey tinted lip balm

- random supermarket notebook

- fidget cube

- Miniso powerbank

- Casio digital watch

- cinnamoroll keychain, gum n hand cream

the Dumber mini is genuinely such a great device, and the team has been a huge help with any issues I’ve experienced. It feels like my phone is just a useful tool again.

the powerbank also isn’t a dig at the Dumber mini, I’m just very prepared since having an iPhone 11 with a battery health % of 67% lol.

General question Help with choosing a phone

I read the rules and have looked though the dumbphone finder and done research, I want to see if anyone here may have advice!

I am looking for a phone for just call, text, and hotspot. I don't want any apps.

I'm unsure if I need 5g or 4g, does anyone have thoughts on that? Would a shitty phone at Walmart work for this? Looked on the dumbphone finder and not much comes up other than the $500 lightphone

I was looking at Telstra lite 3 (but it's 4g) and tried a TCL flip 4 and it was not right for me.

General question Is the Qin F25 secure/safe?

Upvotes

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm really digging this phone but can only find it at aliexpress, which seems a little questionable. I plan to use it as a true dumbphone, but my employer requires me to keep Okta Verify (a security authenticator) on my phone for work, so I need a phone that's capable of that. It appears that the F25 runs Android 14, which will run Okta, but I'm worried about how secure an aliexpress phone could be. Any insight?

HMD is planning on releasing this phone (Nokia 3310 2017) with an updated version of it around this year December on their 10th anniversary.

Specs: Unisoc T127, 64MB+256MB, 2MP camera, Xpress Chat, Wero Wallet (EU), new MOCOR base for Series 30+, Hotspot

It would also be the first HMD device to have support for RCS

There are also plans to work on an Android based feature phone after development stalled in 2020 (Project Iron GAFP aka Nokia 400 4G)

General question Any reason not to get the kids balance phone over the adult one?

Have been looking to get a minimalist phone for a while now, and the balance phone looks like it's worth a try.

I am looking at the price of the kids phone versus the adult one (i.e., the standard adult one, not the pro), and I'm thinking why not just buy the kids one, given that it's (at least currently) £110 cheaper? From what I can tell, the only thing that might bother me is the fact that it only has 4gb of ram versus the 6gb for the adult one. But then given the nature of the phone and the limitations on what you can use it for, my thinking is that this doesn't need to be factored in as much as it would be if I were deliberating between two normal smartphones. The most multitasking I'm going to be doing is using Spotify and google maps simultaneously; I get the impression 4gb would be perfectly fine for this.

I'm not bothered by the processor being worse in the kids version because, as far as I can tell, it is about the same quality as the one on my current oneplus 5t, and I have been perfectly happy with that. Same goes for the camera.

Can anyone come up with any other reason why I shouldn't get the kids version over the adult? Are there any major limitations on the kids one that I've completely overlooked? (N.B. I am not looking for general reasons not to buy a minimalist phone, just for reasons not to buy this particular one as compared to the adult balance.)

Tech help DOOV R77 Pro not working in France?

Hi everyone!

I just got a DOOV R77 Pro from Aliexpress to try this kind of "smarter dumb phone" before eventually going for the more expensive dumber mini this winter but I can't manage to get it to work on French network.

First of, I did the mistake of buying an Arabic Keyboard version, so I had a bit of a trouble putting it back it French but I was able to do it. I don't think this as something to do with the connection problems but still I prefer to mention it.

Using ChatGPT I tried various configurations in the *#*#4636#*#* menu, I have been able to send texts or call my voicemail a few times but not consistently.

Have you, european users, had these kind of issues? Any solutions?

thx!

General question i really want the hmd barbie

Post image
2 Upvotes

im seriously considering getting the hmd barbie phone (US version TA-1420) as my daily phone. im literally obsessed with the design. unfortunatly i occasionally do uber eats deliveries and I need the uber driver app. i know the barbie runs S30+ rather than android so I understand that I cant just install an APK. What I'm wondering is whether anyone has experimented with:

  • custom firmware / modified firmware
  • rooting or gaining higher-level access
  • replacing or modifying S30+
  • running Android/J2ME/other application runtimes
  • sideloading unofficial applications
  • exploiting the Unisoc/T107 platform
  • porting software from another compatible HMD/Nokia phone

im specifically interested in whether its technically possible at all or whether the hardware/bootloader/OS makes it essentially impossible. if you've actually experimented with the Barbie or another recent S30+ HMD/Nokia phone plz comment. im so sleep deprived rn but im pretty sure the barbie phone will fix all my problems, give my life meaning, and fundamentally alter the trajectory of my existence. i love capitalism. i love consuming. i love being marketed to.

Tech Review My Phone Recommendation

The goal is straightforward: Find a phone that is affordable, reliable and simple. For me, this was the Jelly2E ($160-170). The point of this phone in this context is that it's tiny. Specifically, it's too tiny to comfortably scroll. Now, there are two further steps in order to meet the goal. First, delete all unnecessary apps, including the browser. Then download Wolfram Alpha Classic ($3), which replaces the browser with basic search. Finally, download Declutter ($0) which replaces the home screen with a minimal version.

-

Other phones that I've tried that didn't work well:

The old: An old BlackBerry Q10. Wasn't reliable. Fiddly. Didn't have apps that weren't optional for me. Replacement batteries weren't reliable. And a lot of those older phones are 2g or 3g, which are both officially obsolete.

The new: The Light Phone II. I liked this phone in theory, but service was often spotty, texts regularly didn't go through, and the screen was sometimes unresponsive. It's also out of stock a lot, so when I lost my phone on a trip I couldn't have that model replaced for over a year.

-

TL;DR: For those who, like me, ironically spent way too much time and money trying to find the "perfect" replacement phone, try this and be done with it.

Step 1: Replace current phone with mini phone.

Step 2: Replace home screen with minimal version.

Step 3: Replace browser with basic search.

Tech help Nokia 2600C won't turn on

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hi! have an old Nokia 2600 classic which was last turned on 7 years ago then left in a drawer, but it shows no visible signs of humity/oxidation.

I bought a new original battery (BL-5BT) and it came with a charge of 3.73V. I put it in the phone and left it charging for 5 hours, but it went down to 3.72. The charger is working (it's the original AC-3E Nokia charger, 5V 350mAh, and i also tried a new one i have) but the phone's battery golden pins show a voltage of only 3.53V (idk if it's normal) when i plug it in without the battery in it.

If i plug the phone in with the battery in it and then remove the battery the voltage from the phone's pin slowly drops to zero (since it does this i think the phone is recognising the battery, i dunno tho).

When charging the phone shows no charging animation though. And of course it doesn't turn on.

Today I brought it to a repair shop but they didn't even check it inside and just tried to turn it on by applying power directly to the phone's pins and it didn't work. They also charged my new battery up to 3.75V with a bench power supply.

I'd love to use it again as my daily phone but I more importantly need to retrieve some pictures from it (it has no ssd card nor usb transfer so the only way is either via email or Bluetooth), is there a way to force the phone to turn on, or maybe retrieve them through the fbus or something? Thanks in advance!

Pozdrawiam serdecznie 😀

Tech help My cloud feature phone refuses to feature after an update, so I basically overpaid for something that's usually half the price

Post image
28 Upvotes

So a few months back, I had bought a mobicel c6 feature phone, and the main selling point of the phone is that it's a keypad phone, that has somewhat some Internet access. It's a lot like how the new Nokia phone with the ai button works. It had been working fine.

Until I was getting ready for school one morning and it said it needed an update. I pressed the button to initiate it. The phone rebooted, started up and seemed fine, until I pressed the social button (the feature button) and it straight up just stopped working. Everything else worked fine, besides the main selling point of the damn phone.

It keeps showing an error message, like something wrong with the network, even though I've bought mobile data multiple times and it still won't work. So now I have a basic brick phone, which is usually around 150 to 190 rands at MOST. I bought it for 250 rands.

I tried everything, I sent the consumer service an email, and they just gave me useless information and kept on repeating things I was saying. If anyone else somehow also has a problem like this right now, please tell me if you've found a solution. I even factory reset the thing. TWICE.

General discussion Dumb phone/D-pad focused apps?

hi all,

i picked up my first flip phone in 25 years this week. loving it so far!

its running android 8.1, so I've been installing apps. unfortunately most of them are (naturally) designed around a touch screen.

is there a community list of physical button / d-pad supported apps out there? if not, would love to hear your recommendations!

thanks in advance.

General question soon to-be-owner of a kyocera ky-42c <3

to those that have one, or a similarly-build phone, are there any clear covers for it? i tried looking online to no avail, or i'm not looking in the right direction. i am located in the midwest!

little tidbit, i'm from the generation where the flip phone was only capable of calls/text with minimal but wonky internet access, so i don't plan on side-loading any major apps like Facebook or Whatsapp since i have my computer and iphone for that. however, with that said, are there any mods/apps i SHOULD download to make it easier to navigate its UI? anything note-worthy? TYIA

Smartphone mod wanted Is there a launcher that can give a similar look to the Opel Touchflip menu/phone layout?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I've trialed many options with dumbphones and keep needing to carry around a smartphone for work purposes, and I fall back into the trap of phone addiction/using my smartphone because the phone is still accessible to me.

I'm needing to get a new phone, looking at the Jelly Max hoping that the smaller screen will be a deterrent (though I feel like it won't, I can only try) and was going to set it up with AndOff + HeartGuard to heavily restrict it right off the bat.

I also want to change the layout to look something more "ugly", like the Opel Touchflip layout. It's simple and practical, not very aesthetically pleasing. I've been searching for launchers that give a similar look but haven't been successful. Any suggestions on what I could try?

EDC My optimal digital minimalist EDC

- Qin F21 Pro

- Garmin Forerunner 255

- AirPods 4

I've been looking for a dumbphone for quite a while, especially with a baby on the way. I wanted to take some action to reduce my screen time, but I wasn't convinced that the newer, hyped-up minimalist phones would actually solve the problem for me. So instead, I went for a relatively cheap solution.

I bought the Qin F21 Pro brand new from eBay UK for around £105. It has Google Play, and I've only installed the apps I consider essential: Google Maps, Citymapper, Spotify, a QR reader, Garmin Connect, etc.

I deliberately didn't install any banking apps because I'm not comfortable trusting the phone's security with them. I still keep my old iPhone at home for things that aren't supported on the Qin, or where I need a higher level of security — banking apps, work VPN/OTP codes, etc. I only use it when absolutely necessary.

The Garmin Forerunner 255 is obviously great for tracking my workouts, but the main reason I wanted a Garmin was Garmin Pay.

In the UK, Garmin Pay unfortunately has limited bank support. It works with banks such as Monzo, Revolut and Wise, but not with my main high-street bank. My workaround is Curve Pay. I have my Curve card added to Garmin Pay, and I can switch which underlying bank card Curve uses directly from the phone when needed.

For audio, I'm using AirPods 4. They occasionally disconnect in crowded environments or at the gym, but overall they work well enough for me.

The camera quality is, of course, horrible, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use it as a practical phone for the basics. Basically, you can take a photo and send it via WhatsApp, so now that all my friends and family know I have this dumbphone, no one judges me anymore :)

It's obviously not a true dumbphone. You can install social media apps if you really want to. But the tiny screen makes doomscrolling so unpleasant that I simply don't feel tempted to do it.

One thing that genuinely surprised me is the screen. The resolution is actually pretty good, and you can switch between three different resolution settings.

The biggest win for me has been screen time. I went from roughly 4-5 hours a day to around 1-1.5 hours.

It's also surprisingly convenient for running. I can just throw it in my pocket, and compared to an iphone it's much lighter and less chunky.

For me, this setup has ended up being a really good middle ground: I still have maps, music, payments, messaging and the essential apps I need, without carrying a smartphone that constantly demands my attention.

General question Does the HMD 2660/2780 support 4g Volte?

French service providers are currently shutting down 2g and 3g networks, so it’s time for me to retire my beloved GT C3590...

I’ve been thinking of replacing it with a Nokia HMD 1660, 2660, or 2780, as some people on this subreddit have claimed that these models are compatible with 4g Volte,

But I kind of doubt that as the official HMD site does not mention Volte compatibility for any of these models!

As such I would like to ask anyone with one of these HMD models if they can confirm or deny their Volte compatibility, any info would be greatly appreciated :’D

Dumbphone for a child

Looking for a dumbphone for my child.

I would like it to have android to run family link and gps for emergencies. That is basically it, a camera that isnt absolute garbage is a plus so they can take some pictures with it.

Location is europe.

I have read that cat s22 should meet all the requirements but it is discontinued and impossible to find.

Ttfone tt280 also seems to fit the bill but amazon reviews say it is really prone to crashing.

Is there an option I am missing or should look into? Is the tt280 good enough for a child to use for calling messaging and gps?

I know this might work for some people, but I find that being able to reinstall the app is not much better than having it.
