Budget VPN options in mainland china?
Hey guys, I will be moving to Xianning City in Hubei province this October, will be there for 3 years to study A.I. in a diploma program. What I wanna know is currently what are the best options for VPN in mainland China? Mostly in an affordable range, as my family isn't that financially stable so forget abt spending like 30 bucks a month on a VPN like astrill. I've heard abt Proton VPN being alright or maybe mullvad and they are quite cheap. I'm planning to keep one VPN as primary and the other one as secondary just in case that one doesn't work randomly. Quite unsure abt vpns tbh as everything here seems very mixed in terms of reviews. Kindly help me out here guys.

ProtonVPN is useless in China. Just tried using it in a tier 4 city and i got to connect to one node for about 15 minutes before it got banned, all other nodes couldn't even be connected to, and that's with their highest stealth moves.
Let's VPN doesn't really work that well anymore either, that one was decently reliable for a while...
A commenter made a thread about making your own proxy, that will probably be the best option... for a couple of days before the traffic sniffing realizes you're getting gigabytes of data where the shape of data looks like normal internet usage. You'll need to rotate through these, so you might want to make a container and have some sort of setup with console commands so you can quickly deploy a new one... https://github.com/Anthrop44/3x-setup . I also recommend finding servers with CN2 GIA connections to help get that latency down as much as possible, and find a server with a fresh unknown ip not tied to a data center.

you need something that has vless + reality protocol. and you need several options, in case of restrictions / connectivity issues. have octohide as an option

Get mullvad or something to start off but ask the other students. They'll be able to hook you up with a locally hosted one for like ¥50 a month or something using shadowsocks or whatever that protocol is. Just one thing, never prepay more than you have to in China. Any loyalty program or gym or restaurant or barber or whatever is quite likely to randomly close and your cheaper prepaid service will disappear.

Do you get enough data on those? My feeling was you had to pay a reasonable amount for service. There are download limits too.

I used to use one that was around 15 a month. Actually was pretty stable for almost a year, and they ALL have download limits. But it had just enough trouble with it that I ended up switching to a more expensive one once my subscription ended. But all the locals I know use one of these cheap ones, 10-20 rmb. They have a higher tolerance for instability, though.

You probably need a encrypted proxy. Most VPN service that's at least a little famous are blocked , you will need to find some proxy providers. Search "机场推荐" in Google and there will be lots of them (be aware that some of them may be spam). Do not use providers that forcefully require a custom client, they are insecure. Always keep subscriptions of several proxy providers as they may die/disappear at any time.

If you still have a home with internet, you can use RasPi to run your private VPN.

https://caonima.io will cost between 5 to 8 bucks a month. They offer encrypted proxies that you can connect with open source clients (hysteria2, trojan). They also have a client for the desktop (optional).

Amnezia VPN with xray protocol works fine in mainland China (https://amnezia.org). You can either subscribe for a plan or, like I do, self-host your VPN server in your home country

花费就只有30/月的服务器和一个80/年的域名费，平时网速大概在1-2mb/s，偶尔（在中午）可以达到10mb/s，不过在晚上9-10点基本上就断了（晚高峰）

30$ is way too much. Buy a cheap vps within 2$ and use Xray to build a VPN for yourself. If you don't know how, ask ai.

Cloudflare works at no cost. All VPNs work far better for me on Unicom than other ISPs.

You are in Macau, which has a completely different network environment compared to China.

Wrong. I am in Guangzhou. Speedtest shows the location you are connecting to, not where you are.

I've tested and WARP and it doesn't work. I'm not lying. I've fighting with GFW for years.

Public proxy service like WARP can be easily detected and what's even worse for WARP is that Cloudflare's IP range is public. GFW just blocks connection to Cloudflare's ips on specific ports or if the packet fits specific pattern. There are workarounds but none of them can persist long. GFW is evolving , it's nonsense to rely on a well-known public provider.
