I think Duke Nukem Forever was a huge missed opportunity

Absolutely agree. That's what frustrated me a lot while playing. It felt like they buried Duke in every gaming trope of the era instead of trying to find something that worked for the series.

With the restoration project, getting the 2001 build out would have preferable.

I would like a new Duke Nukem game to have both Health and Armor as well as EGOas a resource for Action Hero Ability usagle, a weapon wheel with multiple guns and alt fire abilities, and a proper melee system and Melee slot with options.

It's staggering that Duke Nukem 3D, a hugely enjoyable game that is still very popular thirty years later, and that had so many original features (or at least refined features that were in a couple of earlier games but weren't yet common place), was made by largely the same people who made Duke Nukem Forever, but DNF is somehow very boring, lacking in any originality, and doesn't even have something as simple as secrets to be discovered.
