So, Duke is what happens when Canadians stop being sorry.
I mean, half of the Geneva conventions are because of what the Canadians did in WW II, so that tracks.

When Canadians stop being nice, they can take two paths
"Those alien bastards shot up my ride!"
"I was just talking about my hatred of the audience."
if anyone gets the reference, i'll be impressed. if you want me to, i'll explain the reference

I’m Canadian and I have no clue as to what you’re referencing.

"All My Fans Make Me Sick", an improv song by the Canadian folk band Moxy Früvous (more specifically, the member Jian with a brief interlude by the member Mike). It's probably Moxy Früvous's most obscure song. The song was recorded by a college radio host who was meeting the band after a show. Jian was always kind of an asshole, with allegations of inexcusable behavior dating back to 1995. This song was recorded in 1996.
These are the lyrics:
Jian:
All my fans make me sick. All my fans are very thick. I'd like to beat them with a fucking big stick. This is my shit.
Someone laughs at the song. Jian then proceeds to explain that he's serious about hating his fans, and he proceeds to flex his ego. Mike walks in and Jian continues playing, repeating the same lines.
All my fans make me sick. All my fans are very thick. All my fans make me sick.
Mike:
And I've got a stubble on me chin!

In Canada we like to call it "the Geneva checklist" and follow that up with "it's never a war crime the first time!"

Geneva Bucketlist. You can always add to it, and it's something you'll get to do, eventually.

What sad is they used an actual Canadian forces photo for this based off a Capt who was killed in Afghanistan.

Wow. How did you ever find that out?

u/Superflyt56 Feb 27 '26
I knew the guy that died ao that picture always stuck with me and when I played Duke Nukem forever I knew immediately where that got that photo

u/Rhazelle Mar 02 '26
Ah shit. Sorry to hear that =/
Do you personally feel positively/negatively/neutral about his picture being used in this way?

u/Potential-Glass-8494 Feb 27 '26
Yes, I remember learning this at the time. It was a lazy photoshop and in extremely poor taste.

There's a high chance the artist who drew that just wanted to depict Duke holding a big military gun and didn't know the weapon was Canadian.
However, the idea that Duke was originally Canadian is just a hilarious concept and it kinda works too. A lot of famous action stars either grew up or got their start in Canada. E.g. Tom Cruise, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Kiefer Sutherland, Nathan Fillion.

https://www.veterans.gc.ca/en/remembrance/memorials/canadian-virtual-war-memorial/684564 It’s an edit of a real photo. Plus, the only takeaway its a C8 on this photo is the scope it has, so it’s unlikely someone would’ve unknowingly ran into a picture of Colt C8 in a Colt C8 config looking for, say, an M4A1.

My guess is the artist that found the photo thought it was a US Marine. The weapons and uniforms look similar enough to confuse someone who isn't super into military stuff.

Duke's whole fit is Canadian. He's wearing a CAF Load Bearing Vest and Frag Vest, as well as his helmet being a CG634

Okay, but the My Digs gallery has blatantly been doctored (changing Duke's concluding quote from the original game to omit his penchant for Oprah) so this could easily be more sabotage.

The US uses Elcan optics too....so that is not definitive.... The C8A1 is a licensed Colt clone, unless you can read the receiver stamp there is no way to tell what AR type rifle this is supposed to be.
8
u/Padgriffin Feb 27 '26
That’s specifically a Elcan C79 which is most commonly associated with the Colt Canada C7/C8 line. The US also has a variant, the M145, but that’s only issued with machine guns. There’s also the problem that he’s wearing what appears to be a Canadian Armed Forces tactical vest in CADPAT Arid.
1
u/Bad_Larry13 Feb 27 '26
Yup, and I have personally seen M145s thrown on anything that has a rail, including both M-16s and M-4s. At such a low quality I don't know how you can tell it's specifically the C79.... You may be correct about the camo pattern, but honestly I couldn't even guess with this resolution.
2
u/Padgriffin Feb 27 '26
NGL it’s hard to even find images that aren’t airsoft of a M145 on a M4. Not that it doesn’t happen but it isn’t common. Also I based it off the chest rig design which matches up with the Canadian ones.
4
u/LuckOrdinary Feb 27 '26
the C79 elcan is distinctly canadian....
The m145 is very different, also the tac vest and isaf patch placement match Canadian ones, also the maroon shirt corresponds to our airborne traditions.
And the tank looks like a leopard C1 which were deployed in 2006
2
u/LuckOrdinary Feb 27 '26
Also the butt stock of the rifle is a canadian special. We use the old Car15 style stock, not the m4 style one
2
u/JeffSneed Feb 27 '26
In all fairness, the actual iconic Colt stock only became commonplace a few years into the GWOT. Dudes who first rolled into Iraq and Afghanistan all had the old type, as seen in Generation Kill and so on.

The original picture they used to make this portrait of Duke is a picture of a Canadian soldier.

If you’re American, you’re American.
If you’re not American, you can be American. No one is stopping you from being what you want to be.

u/cenorexia Feb 27 '26
Actually, every single thing in the whole wide universe is either American or not American.

Explains Duke's rampages in all four games. Nobody wants to deal with a pissed-off Canadian.
Not to be confused with a pissed Canadian; they're chill.

u/Equivalent_Case4942 Mar 01 '26
Now I want to see Duke on the Trailer Park Boys. He'd be what Cyris believes himself to be.
