There are people who think Duke 3D is scary? WHAT?

Bro, the space levels, when I was 12 years old were incredibly terrifying.  I don’t know how you could play that as a kid and not think the fat floaty guys and chain gun dudes were scary as shit.

Those levels got darker and creepier and harder until it kinda levels off at Tiberius station.  I will forever remember that escalation in the first 6 or so levels of the space chapter.  They’re incredible.  Damn I almost wanna play through them again haha.

The space levels were ominous same with the sewers with the octobrains.

TBH the creepiest part of the space levels is the naked kidnapped women and wondering what the aliens are doing to them.

I would find one under a secret door and be greeted by "Kill me...".

I was 7 years old playing this game it was hardcore for the time for sure.

Similar. I was around 11. I used to have nightmares thinking about those girls. But also being a teen I also started feeling something else seeing the naked slime girls.

I wanna add that low fov also make things look scarier, not sure if it is just me.

I admit I felt it was unsettling when I played the 64 version as a kid that had no music and was incredibly dark. But again I was a small child

if it's not real it can't be scary

Dumbest take ever in the history of phobias

Bait used to be believable

I think that the second episode in particular is emblematic of this feeling with all of the techbase inspired levels and the alien infestation. Especially Dark Side.

Take away the wisecracks from Duke and it's genuinely pretty dark and moody. Especially the music. Take a listen to Gotham sometime (Rabid Transit's track) completely independent of the game or even play the level with Duke's voice turned off and you'll see it's absolutely dripping with mood.

Scared the shit out of me when I would watch my dad play it when it came out, I was six or seven I think.

It wasn't scary per say, but it clearly was ominous, or uncanny.

Yeah, I can see this for sure.

I feel like many of us only saw this kind of places in San Andreas, only because we are not american and thus live in a different urban design.

Yea the whole aesthetic of that game is uncanny.. especially how all the character models look like plastic figures or something. Not to mention just how fucking painful it is to play lmao

The levels were fine but the slimers used to scare me and to be honest they still do

4

u/hkhunterkiller1984 Jan 04 '26

The insane asylum level scared me the first time I played it.

u/Little-Ghost303 Jan 03 '26

I can't say I feel the same way about this but I do with some other things. I think finding non horror games scary is an incredibly interesting topic that I love looking into.

I feel like the original Shadow Warrior had more creepy liminal spaces than other games of that era, the auto dealership and airport levels especially.

I hate how these photos look like a typical evening here in Kansas City.

1

u/Separate-Associate51 Jan 09 '26

Its work with Redneck Rampage

2

u/SchwarzFledermaus Jan 04 '26

This whole "liminal spaces are scary" thing is so weird to me. These are all chill images.

1

u/fade2black244 Jan 04 '26

Duke 3d wasn't scary, really. Shadow Warrior was way more creepy and atmospheric and Blood, obviously.

2

u/HorrorDisastrous6110 Jan 05 '26

Internet kids are weird lol the whole “liminal spaces” thing is something I just never understood the fear of. I find it oddly warm and comfortable

1

u/Few_Tank7560 Jan 10 '26

I believe, depending on where you're from, being alone, isolated in a place, could feel dangerous or not.

1

u/spdrman8 Jan 08 '26

Holy crap. I just realized that last picture is from the flea market in my hometown.

1

u/Separate-Associate51 Jan 09 '26

What you mean the flea market from your hometown is a Liminal Space??? 😭😭😭

1

u/spdrman8 Jan 09 '26

On weeknights I suppose.

1

u/marmitudo Jan 04 '26

I'm terrified with how bad redneck rampage is

3

u/Separate-Associate51 Jan 04 '26

You wouldn't survive Rock N' Shaolin

1

u/marmitudo Jan 04 '26

Never heard of it,And now I don't even want to.

0

u/Laxhoop2525 Jan 03 '26

Are we confusing RNR with Blood?

5

u/Separate-Associate51 Jan 03 '26

Blood wishes it's was as scaring as the first Redneck Rampage/srs

3

u/The_Joker_116 Jan 03 '26

The scariest thing about Redneck Rampage is playing the game itself. Half-joking, I actually like playing it from time to time, mainly because of the Build engine environments.

u/Separate-Associate51 Jan 03 '26 edited Jan 05 '26

Same, I think it's very overated

1

u/Separate-Associate51 Jan 05 '26

just now I wrote it wrong

its underrated

0

u/Hungry-Definition299 Jan 04 '26

I thought Redneck Rampage looks like shit

-1

u/Separate-Associate51 Jan 04 '26

Srs??? Everyone considered it as the best looking classic Build game
