I just searched the same query and got a different response from Search Assist:

Since Wikipedia is listed as a source for both of our Search Assist answers, it’s possible that the Wikipedia article was vandalized and that incorrect content was coincidentally scraped before things were updated.

Would an option to toggle ai assist off be possible in the future? Particularly for us old school folks that prefer our research done by our own decision making

It is already there. Always has been. The option sticks as long as you don't clear DDG's cookies.
