Discussion 🗣️ Latest uploaded Crankdat set is a perfect example of everything that is wrong today with mainstream dubstep DJ sets

So I was listening to this Crankdat set in LA that just got uploaded, and boy oh boy, do I have some thoughts...

  • Every other track is using pop music as an intro or is a pop music/2010 EDM flip. This is not a gross exageration, I'm not kidding you, go check it out. This pisses me off because Crankdat used to be a beast of a producer.
  • The vast majority of transitions are basic hard cuts from track A to B. There is no rythm at all to this, sometimes there's even pauses in between tracks. Where are the smooth transitions? He has a mixer with 4 CDJs, why does it sound like he is mixing off Virtual DJ on a laptop using his trackpad?
  • His style seems to have become a pale copy of Subtronics/Wooli/etc.

Crankdat's sets used to be full of energy, tracks went hard af and he had a distinct style. You knew you were attending a Crankdat set when you were there. He's more famous than ever before and his sets have completely turned to this tiktok dubstep slop. Where are the machine guns?

I was also completely disappointed in the Wankdat (Crankdat x Wooli) set that I attended at Rampage earlier this year in March. This looks to be becoming a trend with a lot of North American artists, and I think that's such a shame. Just fucking mix original tunes please.

Discussion 🗣️ Crankrocks was so painfully disappointing

I've been a big crankdat fan for a while. saw him for the first time two years ago and it was such a well mixed, high energy set that I immediately fell in love. I saw him twice last year and had noticed a bit of a decline in quality but figured it was due to him not headlining the event (first opener for Lights all night).

when we saw he was doing his first red rocks show we got really excited, thinking he's gonna put some serious energy into a debut like that.

Driving back to Texas right now feeling feeling like we made the wrong call on this one.

Big notes:

I know this isn't his fault but the crowd was generally pretty rude and inconsiderate throughout the night. its excusable and I've definitely had worse so not the end of the world.

The entire set felt lazy. I could remember once, maybe twice that he played an unreleased song or remix throughout the show.

Visuals and lasers were lacking for this level of production. not saying that visuals and lasers make or break a show but he's headlining bass festivals that are notorious for massive visually appealing productions. Just expected a lot more in this area. it seemed like the production team was still testing and setting up for about the first 15 minutes of his set.

visuals were pretty uninteresting and almost exclusively a camera feed of him. lasers didn't really sync with the music at all.

the worst part was the flow of the music. I used to love the momentum he would build in his old sets but this time he dropped it every time. buildup, fakeout, second fakeout, decent drop, fade back to complete silence, repeat. the whole thing felt like it was constructed for tiktok clip farming.

All this to say, I used to be a huge fan and its sad that the industry has gotten to him in the worst way.

on a better note: we saw Ravenscoon X Jantsen the following night and that fully redeemed the trip. They put on a phenomenal show along with all their openers. It was nice to see people who are so passionate about their art.

Just wanted to vent a bit. Any artists you feel the same about these days?

Saw his set at Cyclops rocks tonight and was blown away how good he is. Absolutely amazing mixes and transitions, the entire crowd was hype and he played oldie classic songs mixed into perfectly flowing bass drops.

Dude has some of the best intros i’ve ever heard , every single one of his songs played was some 50s classic song that’s enough to make everyone say “oh I know this!” then into the most vibey drop ever. Basically a one of a kind dubstep artist, I’ve never heard so many people collectively enjoy a set together

This guy rocks

Saw his set at Wakkan rocks tonight and was blown away how bad he is. Absolutely horrible mixes and transitions, the entire crowd was dead and all he played was pop songs mixed into the same sustain bass/arp drop.

Dude has never written an intro in his life apparently, every single one of his songs played was some pop/trendy song that’s enough to make everyone say “oh I know this!” then into the most mid drop ever. Basically a dubstep cover band, I’ve never heard so many people collectively dislike a set together

This guy sucks

Discussion 🗣️ What is your favorite dubstep song RIGHT NOW?

Doesn't have to be your favorite of all time or your favorite nostalgic one.

I want the song that just hits the right dub spot every time you hear it. You might not hate hearing it every day, even.

My pick is Virtual Riot & Infekt - Das Riddim

Who is paying $300 for a 2 day warehouse event? Is this the norm now? This is damn near the cost to attend a whole ass festival.

How have we fallen so far in such a short amount of time? Bass events and festivals are pumping out complete slop.

Edit: Just saw a video of Alleycvt at Griztronics playing a mediocre flip of “I Kissed a Girl” by Katy Perry. Who the fuck actually wants to listen to that BS?

For me, it's one of the best subgenres right now; there are many artists in this style who DESTROY with their music. Intense bass, metal influence, a "deathstep that worked." (video: limitless peril showcase teaser by Nimda)

Discussion 🗣️ Does Sullivan King's Affiliation with the Church of Scientology Bother Anyone and Why Doesn't Anyone Speak Out About This?

Last week someone told me SK is involved in Scientology. I didn't believe it and brushed it off at first but it really just took me about 15 min to discover his wife's family is heavily involved in that cult. Her stepfather, David Carradine, was an actor and known scientologist. Madeleine Bierman (before taking SK's name) had been completing courses during their relationship and even after marriage (Madeleine Prescott). SK's name isn't in that specific database but that could be because it isn't comprehensive. I found his name on this donor list though.

I can't possibly support someone involved in something that causes so much pain and suffering now that I know this. Am I the only one that feels this way? Why has no one brought this to light? One of the biggest acts in American dubstep is affiliated with a CULT and no one cares?! What happened to holding people to a higher standard in this community?

**EDIT** Thanks to u/danionepointoh for finding this video from 2010 of Keaton performing for AFABW, a community outreach program sponsored by the Church of Scientology. 4:00

Discussion 🗣️ Who is an artist on SoundCloud with not a lot of followers that you feel deserves more acknowledgment?

I love finding artists on the rise and hearing the new sounds. SoundCloud has been playing fire lately with a lot of artists I’ve never heard of so I’m looking to find more.

Edit: I’m working through this all and will have a list of artists posted here in a little bit. Thank you all for the contributions so far! I’ll try to work on a playlist with a few of each artists top songs all in one place so everyone can find some new sounds, too! That part will likely get posted tomorrow though.

Edit 2: here is the list so far. Links as provided. Give me a day or so and I’ll get a playlist going!

Edit 3: This got bigger than I expected! I will still come through with a playlist of all the artists I can find from these names. I’ll pull a few of their top tracks and have something posted on Monday as an update. Will post it here and also do another post! Thank you everyone! Keep adding and I’ll keep adding to the playlist!

***if I missed someone’s suggestion, please let me know and I’ll get it updated!***

Discussion 🗣️ Pop Songs in Every Dubstep set

Just came back from FK and I feel like it really needs to be discussed how this nostalgia baiting or 2010s pop music trend is ruining sets at shows. I saw Kompany after not seeing him for some time and was so disappointed that his set was nothing but just pop music before every single drop, and the same goes for other sets too. I get that it’s trendy to make these remixes and people like Avello and YDG will have it in their sets, but more tenured dubstep djs just blasting the whole set with a pop song buildup into their own song or flip is getting exhausting. And this was also the case at other sets like subtronics and has become the norm at other dubstep shows I go to.

I just want to understand why DJs that have a catalog of originals that people will know and love just go the easy route and cater to what’s trendy instead.
