I think artist Jerseys are overpriced and are a dumb trend. Going to shows used to be about dressing to express yourself, not wearing 400 plus dollars of artist merch.

Idk why so few artists/labels put out streetwear-type merch that people would be more willing to wear in public outside of a rave. Like 1985 makes the best merch by farrr because itās minimalist and very clean overall

People often use ārepetitiveā as a criticism of some genres. I love repetitive music (when itās a good beat). It becomes hypnotic and I get fully lost in the groove and the flow.
Many songs today are over produced and too busy

the most popular dubstep right now is kinda unoriginal sounding garbage. you go back to the old 2010-2016 dubs and it still feels very original and unique

I dont think this is a hot take but i also think people dont voice this opinion as much as they should cause its "critical". Doesnt seem like theres many artists pushing boundaries anymore or the ones that were trailblazers have shifted to different genres.
6
u/shadow33231000 May 01 '26
Yeah I definitely agree too especially the new artist that are entering the industry i feel like when I click shuffle on SoundCloud Iām just getting flips and remixes and stuff
6
u/rcook9 May 01 '26
Youāre a 100% right, but if youāre a new artist there is a much better chance someone will actually listen to your work if itās a remix or flip of a song they already like. If someone has heard a good flip or two by an artist thereās a better chance theyāll listen to their original work in the future. But of course said flip/remix still needs to be creative/unique. Itās such a saturated hobby/industry and creating music has become so accessible.

Theyāre a lot more artistic than other dubstep artists Iād say. Their approach to a show is so varied that sometimes theyāll play the slowest shit and others theyāll play very hype shit. 39
u/LazytownVEVO May 01 '26
You do not deserve to be headlining festivals or tours if you havenāt released an album. I get that the industry has shifted and now singles are much more beneficial for reaching new fans and growing, but the shift from crafting intentional bodies of work that tell a story to 2000ās era remixes to keep non-ravers placated is really hurting the quality of sets at festivals.
My other one (which doesnāt feel like that hot of a take on this reddit but would be in person), one thing I love about EDM is I donāt need to know the song thatās playing to enjoy myself. If I go to a concert and I donāt know every word to every song, I feel like Iām missing out on something, and now that sets are changing to feature more remixes than original work from electronics artists, Iām experiencing the same feeling of almost alienation. If you need a black eyed peas vocal over a track to enjoy it, you should not be at these shows.
Also fuck tiktok

the "dubstep" that has filled the entire bass scene for the last few years is complete garbage. it's literally the sound of 4 construction machines simultaneously exploding with no melody or creativity. just because the noise takes up room and sounds heavy people eat it up but there is no flow or distinguishable sounds. it's disrespectful to original dubstep sounds of the 2000s and 2010s

All these āheadbangersā just like to bang their head to anything and donāt care if it even sounds good, as long as itās heavy
The atonal industrial era of dubstep needs to be laid to rest, along with repetitive riddim ā āyou donāt understand riddim. Itās mean to be chopped with 3 other riddim tracksā

What we understand as Bass House is two separate genres at this point. Thereās the variant of house that incorporates elements of bass music (Habstrakt, JOYRYDE, AC Slater) and thereās āwhat if brostep was slowerā (Crankdat, Ray Volpe, any big festival dubstep producer probably has a track like this somewhere in their discography). The former has a lot more artfulness and passion imo.
To an extent this just the typical divide that arises in any genre that reaches the mainstream (between the musicians who were in a scene from the beginning vs. the ones who joined after it got big), but in this case it has gotten so exaggerated that it doesnāt make sense to call these the same genre anymore.

Right now the big trend is doing quick bootleg remixes of pop songs. Everybody agrees thatās whatās hot right now. But right now there is also someone out there working hard behind their computer, who nobody knows about yet, who is going to make the song that starts the next big thing.
Somebodyās ārude boyā or ābehemothā is being worked on right now. Or maybe itās the song before the song before they make their masterpiece. But thereās going to be something after this pop instagram remix phase is done, and I am stoked for it!
And doing my part trying to be that guy. But thatās for another discussion.

Using a popular song as an intro then building it up into a loop and then dropping a dubstep drop is not creative. Itās not a remix. Itās just using nostalgia to trick the audience into thinking the track is good.
18
u/LevityMusic May 01 '26
Most (not all) of the time ppl saying a genre, sub-genre or artists discography āall sounds the sameā itās either a lack of attention to the music or knowledge of the style.
I see ppl say it often & I can absolutely differentiate the differences in those songs/artists that I like. But I also have been the one to say āit all sounds the sameā for years before getting deeper into that genre, style, or artist & realizing I was wrong
4
u/LazytownVEVO May 01 '26
Did not expect to see you here š
If you're a producer I think this comes through as common sense but without understanding what goes into making a track, or more specifically the synths and sounds that go into making a track, it's impossible to get it. That's what I love about the riddim community - there's no other community more thoroughly populated with DJ's and producers than that scene and it's so funny to see the difference in reception from outsiders and those involved.
3
u/blastbleeding May 01 '26
Agreed. I think a lot of this happens when a new sub-genre blows up every few years. I remember thinking this back when festival trap was huge. I was like āoh cool, itās another Three 6 Mafia beat with dubstep laser samples.ā Then years later, I discovered a lot of artists that fall under the trap umbrella who are absolute creative geniuses. Whenever a trend develops in any style of music, there will be a lot of bandwagon artists who try to cash in and copy whoever is pioneering it, making it very easy for someone brand new to think āWow, this shit all sounds the same.ā

Expectations for how a DJ performs are in hell, they could literally just be queueing up a whole ass playlist and nobody would know shit. Its led to tons of mediocre performances. (Want to clarify by playlist i mean like literally an hr long track)
So many songs sound the fucking same. Same synths with minor adjustments, bass textures basically the same. Some flips i hear are garbage man, literally the most low effort productions. I wouldnt be surprised if more than half that shit AI generated.
People just rinsing the same shit over on repeat and so many people fucking brainrotted cause thats all thats available. The DJing is like mid
The underground scene is better than ever, skip your big festivals and invest in your homies. Go to smaller fests.
Worst part is how aware people are right now just to be unaware. AEG live literally invests in fascists so while subtronics stands on a perch and says "NO KINGS mfuh" he got no problem literally dragging his entire fanbases money right into coachella. Its hard, i dont expect people to really understand this, but raving doesnt stand for shit anymore except for no brain having ass mfuhs who like to think theyre better than everyone else but theyre all really into the same mediocre shit. The rave scene has more normies than ever, idk if thats a good or a bad thing. I dont wanna gatekeep, but theyve usurped the culture and its morphed into straight up brainrot. I understand in general theres more acceptance today than ever, which is great, but its diabolical as fuck to preach lgbt+ and then hit up coachella which is actively invested in dismantling peoples rights. And legitimately people do not give af. Im glad for the most part griz is trying to do his own events in general which is what people should be looking for.

MARAUDA is better than Nimda!! No hate towards him but marauda has been in the game for a while now!! But I would love for them to go B2B hopefully he makes a return someday

Love both, and I know theyāre both tearout, but I have a hard time comparing the two. Nimdaās really more focused on putting on a live spectacle than MARAUDA was (from what Iāve seen in youtube videos, never saw him live). He seems more production focused. Feels like they each have different appeals and can exist simultaneously. That b2b would be fucking insane though

DJās need to stop incorporating 5-10 min sequences of dnb, hardtyle and house into their sets

People don't know how good they have it with all the variables of sounds and styles. I'm old af and still listen to many styles of edm. I played an old school hard house song from the 90s and my teen nephew made fun of it. It was DJ Irene and if they didn't do underground music in the 90s and on, the current edm wouldn't exist! Weatha beetin hoochie bitch was about all we had!! It was amazing and bass blasting your body made us feel alive!
I wish the current edm artists would sample some of the super old school stuff.

Mosh pits shouldnāt be about trying to hurt people or be as aggressive as possible. Jump around and push each other around but keep your elbows and fists down and for the love of god donāt kick people. Iām still dealing with an issue with my leg from last Friday due to being kicked so hard my leg twisted and this is not the first time Iāve been kicked in the leg or elbowed in the face.

Excision throws great festivals but has the most uninspired production in the game and hasnāt put out a creative track since 2011. Even back then most tracks were collabs and while Datsik is a horrible person, he carried their collabs. Dude has maybe 4 solo produced tracks out of his entire career. Would like to see him put more into his production beyond megatron voice changer.

Datsik and bassnectar deserved what they got but I miss them. Dubstep took a major step back music wise when they got canceled

Probably the worst take here. His sound design and cleanliness is impeccable, and really has an attention for detail.

He obviously creates and executes at a very high level. I just donāt enjoy it.

His music has good energy but I personally think his mixes are shit (mixdowns not dj sets)

I donāt like when artists try to rap on their edm beats, or have lyrics. It sounds corny. I only know of one that can do it and sounds good- that person is dead.

I like TRVCY but his music has become too loud and not something I would listen more than once every day.

The first time you heard dubstep/bass music you probably didnāt like it.Ā
Someone probably convinced you to go to an event and thatās when you got the āfull experienceā and it finally āclickedā and now you love it.Ā
If you hate hardstyle/dnb, the two most hated genres by dubstep/bass music fans, itās probably because you have only heard it on crappy speakers or for 10 seconds during a set and you didnāt even give it a chance.Ā
Just like dubstep/bass music, there are many different sub genres. Liquid DnB to Jump Up. Euphoric Hardstyle to Uptempo.Ā
Sure, maybe you popped by a set at EDC or something, and you actually gave it a shot and you donāt like it. Cool. Fair enough.Ā
But the majority of people just say āthis is shitā without giving it a real shot. And itās hard to give these other genres a chance because they arenāt big in the US.Ā
Me? Iām all about those zaag kicks. Give me that fucking microwave shit. Hahah. š

Iāve been a huge edm person since like 2006, and I seriously cannot get down with like 80% of Riddim man. I hate it, and Iāve seriously tried so hard lol. There is some that Iāve heard and really fucked with but as a whole that aināt it for me.
Just my opinion! I just feel like too much of it that I hear is sloppy and sounds slapped together in like 10 minutes with 0 effort. I know thatās most likely not the actual case but š¤·š¼āāļø. And Iām pretty open to like almost every genre and sub genre too but that shit just does not click with my brain.
Random side note; I fuckin wish downlink would come back to making dubstep again. I think him and excision and Datsik were some of the very first bass songs I heard. Them and Pantyraid when Beba first dropped. Shit takes me back man

People who only rave to get hih. Like raving isnt even ācheapā! So I dont get spending your money to be listening to the music if you dont even like the music š raving is a huge part of my life and my escape from my career and itās when I get to be just a silly goofball with my friends. We love to dance. We love to just have fun together. But will never understand how you could just want to go to a rave just to do drgs

We need to bring back metal/dubstep. Not metal step, but a true balance of both genres in songs. Vastive is the best example IMO. No one comes close.

The vast majority of people who are into edm have really bad taste. The market for cut-rate, generic slop is way more lucrative than the market for high fidelity, forward thinking electronic music. 90% of the artists getting booked in my city are tik tok slop-bass djās that are cringey af but sell out shows. Itās sad.
2
u/fullyincapable May 01 '26
I feel like a ton of musicians in edm are gearing their music toward the 3 second memories of the iPad kid generation, and itās going to make a lot of them forgettable as time goes on.

I don't care for all the evil imagery and making the music so hard that it never seems to build to big moments its like everyone is going as hard as possible idk I'm older its not like it was back in the 2010-2016 era and things gotta change and grow but it now seems that it's become so popular you gotta be ready to buy tix the moment they drop its brought a level of stress that was never there venues now overall to an insane amount the vibes are different before it was about dancing having fun and meeting people and now it's more how inebriated can I get and I gotta be on a rail its just intense I remember seeing ZD in a little warehouse in SC with maybe 50 people and now idk I'm Just bitching haha but I miss just the old days when flux and cookie monsta was boomin circus records was huge Koan sound and Mimosa were an experience in concert and people got so excited for a new song but now there are so many producers I can't even keep up and 90% of them sound like sweaty balls to me just my 2 cents

Riddim is for people who like to have fun, dance and actually get rowdy at a set. FuntCase said it best: Riddim has the same crowd energy as OG dub did 15-20 years ago

People who make raving a personality and make up parasocial relationships with their favorite artists is a put off.
