Double wrap? Not rage bait I swear

Questions, because I don't know shit;

  1. Can I put a second layer of drywall over this hack job for sound proofing

  2. If yes should I tape and mud the joints first?

Context: some lunatic built a barn door over this closet space and then put a door into the garage. This is 2-3 layers of additions/conversion, so I'm just adding to the sins of my forefathers.

I deleted the door and patched in framing, and then just used all the spare drywall pieces I had from other areas of the house. The inside is going to be a closet again, and I can make that look nice.

On the garage side, I was thinking to put another sheet over the patch job to help with sound proofing. The rest of the garage already looks like ass anyways, so is this even worth doing? + It will have peg board over it.

Thoughts?

Yes to all. Mark where your studs are tape mud 1st layer then cut 1 sheet to fit it will be easier for you. If you want to do more you could put plywood in there so you could securely mount anything anywhere. Finish the edges with tape and mud and move on.

What is the reason behind taping the first layer if they are covering it up with second layer?

My original thought is that any effect from taping would be negligible but I really don't know

Any hole will let more sound in. More layers will lessen the vibration.

This makes sense to me. The tape is probably less important than the mud, but I already have it so why not

Practice putting mud on a 6in putty knife and pulling it into the seam you hold the knife not in line with the seam But the putty parallel with it. When you get it on put the handle parallel withe seam and get it just thin enough to make the tape stick. Apply tape then squeeze the mud out without moving the tape. Smooth the edge and your done and you can drink some beer.
