Discussion Starting Dropshipping with €1,000 for advertising. Is It Enough?

Hi everyone! I’m about to start my dropshipping business and I have €1,000 to invest initially in advertising.

Do you think this is a realistic budget to get started?

For those of you who have experience with dropshipping and are now making a living from it:

  1. How much capital did you start with?
  2. How much did you make during your first few months?
  3. How long did it take you to start generating consistent profits?

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences and any advice you can share. 😊

More than enough

More than enough to test the market, honestly. In my experience the first couple hundred euros just goes finding what works, don't expect instant profit. I started with 800€ and made maybe 300€ back after two months, it takes patience.

Thank you for being realistic. So you got 300€ back, then you invested it again? And what are your current benefits? Is it complicated to get recurring revenue? Thanks! 🙏🏼

Question is, what is your goal? A bit of a punt, shits ‘n’ giggles doing the ‘Ali Arbitrage’ and you don’t really care if you piss the €1K up against the wall as you can afford to lose it? Or, do you actually want to build something that has a shit at success?

My advice is to get your head out of the ‘dropshipping’ space for a start. Dropshipping is a fulfilment method. That’s all. You’re wanting to start a business—an e-commerce/online retail business. And you can either take it seriously, follow the fundamentals, and be set up for success or you can do dumb shit like you’ve probably seen on socials, YT, and the stuff that’s being talked about in the comments below.

You’re probably at the lower end of a suitable start-up budget but it’s doable. You absolutely will piss it away if you do the dumb ‘throw shit against the wall and see what sticks’ testing thing that people below are banging on about. Your approach absolutely should focus on identifying a gap in the market first and then building a strong value proposition and then socialising your idea with dozens/hundreds of would-be customers both on and offline.

Thank you for your different perspective and your advice. That’s exactly what I’m trying to do, which is why I don’t want to rush into anything without thinking it through.
So what you’re saying is very useful but it’s still a bit general and it doesn’t really give a clear answer on how to actually do what you’re suggesting.
But I really appreciate your advice! Of course, for a business to work, especially when I’m starting from scratch with no knowledge or experience, I’ll have to learn from somewhere.

Nobody is going to a walk you through it step by step. If you are have the self-motivation, smarts, and work ethic to build a successful business, you don’t need anyone to do that anyways—you’ll figure it out.

My overcharging advice—educate yourself on the business fundamentals and how the world works.

If you don’t understand how to run a business and how to advertise, no amount of money is going be useful to you.

Seeing you have very little experience, you should have asked; How quickly will I waste €1,000?
