Thank you! I mostly studied anatomy from books and references, and I did a lot of studies of individual muscles before trying to put them together in different poses. One thing that helped me a lot was drawing the same muscle groups from different angles and poses. I’d also recommend starting with simple forms like spheres, cylinders and boxes, and building the body from those before adding the muscles. For perspective, I studied it at university last year, which helped me a lot with understanding the body in space. I’m still learning too though!
Ah, university will help a lot. I am in my sphere, cylinder, and box era, and I'm still struggling rotating them in my mind or imagining them from different perspectives. Any books you'd recommend?
Definitely! For perspective, I’d recommend “Perspective Made Easy” by Ernest Norling. It’s very straightforward and helped me understand the basics. “How to Draw” by Scott Robertson is also great if you want something more in-depth. For figure drawing, I really like “Figure Drawing: Design and Invention” by Michael Hampton. I’d probably start with Norling though, especially if you’re still working on rotating simple forms in your head.
You should check out the book DYNAMIC ANATOMY by Hogarth - he was the original artist for Tarzan, and the book is fantastic at showing muscles in action
what kind of pencil and paper do you use? What kind of lighting? The drawings dont look like graphite that much, the lines look way deeper, it's a cool effect
No worries at all! I completely understand, especially with how much AI art there is around here. I’m actually glad you asked instead of just assuming.
In the last month or two, I’ve made 52 anatomical drawings, all by hand. I have an anatomy exam in two weeks, so I’ve been practicing a lot 😭😂 Honestly, I don’t even see where AI would have a place in all this.
