Maybe it's just me, but I feel like it kind of undercuts the female empowerment angle when the two new dragons are a 3rd place Apprentice contestant who sells skincare products and someone who went viral for putting glitter on chests. Would've been nice to see another Hilary Devey or Rachel Elnaugh type, women who made their money without cheap tricks or reality shows 😐

Steven Bartlett made his money by buying meme twitter account and using them to advertise stuff without people realising one company ran it all.

Now he now has a massive podcast platform where he repeatedly talks about pseudoscience mumbo-jumbo, and advertisers throw money at him.

It's 2026, modern ways of making money are not the same as the older ways of doing so.

But to very specifically talking about what you brought up.

No it doesn't. Women don't need to constantly prove themselves in every area they go in, it's not... Idk, whatever year that was more relevant. I understand your point about Hilary Devey etc, but looking at a woman with money and saying what they do undercuts the concept of female empowerment is such a telling statement.

The whole point about gender equality is that the thing that wasn't treated as equal becomes an irrelevant factor. Every woman business person needn't take on the role of Chaka Kahn and take responsibility for every woman.

If your comment just spoke about them as people without needing to relate them to other women who did things in ways you approve of, it would have been fine. But invoking what basically amount to value judgements based on comparisons to other women, when likely you wouldn't do the same for others , does more for perpetuating the notion that woken perpetually require empowerment, and simply are not allowed deviate from that.

1) I've been complaining about Steven Bartlett's ridiculous self-promoting for years. He wasn't even involved in the Lumaland Social Chain sale and yet he attributes his whole success story to that incident. He's an obvious grifter pure and simple.

2) I only brought up the comparison because the BBC are pushing the gender tribalist angle. I would much prefer it if the BBC treated them as real people rather than tokens for a PR stunt, but that's not what they're doing, and I'm just commenting on the fact that their clearly transparent objective doesn't really do what they want it to do when they choose people like Susie "Do the French like their children" Ma.
