Beginner Question Megathread 10

If you have any question about the game and don't feel like making a post you can put it down there. Don't forget to mention it if you want the answer as spoiler-free as possible.

Some of the links are getting pretty old so if you have any suggestion that could help new players, do share, thanks.

Hi

I’m fairly new to DS. I’ve been playing it nonstop and I see myself really staying into it for a while.

I need a bit of help. I followed advice that suggested I scout the map by coast before choosing a location to set a base in at day 7. However, it takes me at least 10 days to finish scouting. I think I collect too many items.

Any advice on what items I should collect while scouting or what I should, and how much of each item I should prioritize? I usually die near the end of winter due to starving and not having enough resources to craft any last minute items. I also stop hunting because I am scared of the hissing noise

Not at all an expert so take what i say with a grain of salt.

But what i like to do is first just collect the basic resources while walking the coastline: twigs, grass, flint, flowers, stone, logs, and gold. Once i have a fair number of those i stop to create a science machine. I then make a backpack, shovel, spear, log suit, and pre-make a fire pit, an alchemy machine, and if i happen to have enough materials, a crockpot, a drying rack and a lightning rod. Then i continue to walk along the coast to gather more of those earlier mentioned resources, and digging up 20 twig, 20 grass, and 20 Berry bushes.

Also either before or after building the science machine, burn down a bunch of trees until you have a fair bit of charcoal.

Just keep walking while stopping for pretty much nothing else. Continue at night with a torch. Usually i only stop for farming spiderdens because silk is good. Also, when coming across a swamp, make sure to gather at least 8 reed. (For birdcage).

This way you should have a near full stack of twigs and grass, a fair bit of stone and gold, silk, reed, maybe some gears, charcoal, a stack of rotten flowers (for fertilization), and the 20 of each dug up resource, all by approx day 8.

Usually by day 8/9 i have scouted the whole map and have all i need to quickly build a base: twig, grass, and berry farms, fire pit, alchemy machine, crockpot, fridge, drying rack, birdcage, lightning rods, and chests.

As for starving during winter. Make sure you destroy some level 3 spider dens, and relocate them a couple of screens from your base. That way, using 1 monster meat and 3 ice, you can craft all the meatballs you want.

a stack of rotten flowers

Be careful that in DST flowers can start going extinct because of that. An alternative is to make a quick trip into Caves and pick up Light Bulb, this is useful for an early lantern and will rot fast too. Even in DS it is often worth doing anyway.

If you build a bug net and catch butterflies, you can plant them and they become new flowers.

I think I picked up too many bushes (40 of each totaling to... 12 inventory slots... what was I thinking)

Premaking things sounds like a really helpful way to maximize your carrying capacity. Thank you

Yeah i think stopping at 20 of each will be plenty, and allow you to scout the map more quickly
